While nairaland is a forum with facless people we should try as much as possible to make constructive posts as we might not know who will be reading our comments beyond nairaland. We can use this forum to cause a positive behavioral change in the society.

I was flipping through the punch newspapers today in the office till when I got to the i-punch section, alas, I saw our dear nairaland mentioned. I quickly went online to see the e-version and confirmed it.

Excerpts below:

Nigerians challenge Patience Jonathan to debate with Soyinka

July 15, 2013 by Temitayo Famutimi 224 Comments

Some Nigerians on Sunday asked the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, to make herself available for a debate with Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka.

The call came on the heels of the diatribe the First Lady launched against Soyinka in which she described the renowned playwright as an “embarrassment’’ for attributing the crisis rocking Rivers State to her and her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan.

But some Nigerians, who took to Twitter and other social networks to voice their concern over the development, called on a Lagos-based private broadcaster, Channels Television, to organise a debate for the two.

According to them, the TV station’s Sunrise Daily, a news and current affairs programme that features prominent Nigerians, who are experts in their areas of specialisation, will provide a level playing ground for the duo to thrash out the knotty issues they were arguing on.

To actualise their dreams, a cross section of them sent messages in a tweet to the handle of the programme @sunrisedailynow as well as the main official handle of the television station, @Channels_TV on Sunday.

A Twitter user, with the name Abdul Slimzy, tweeting via @abdulslimzy said, “It would be really nice to see Patience Jonathan and Wole Soyinka argue on Channels TV @sunrisedailynow in English Language o.”

An anonymous reader on lindaikeji..com said, “Kindly call on Channels TV to organise a debate between Prof. Wole Soyinka and Dame Patience Jonathan. I know we go laugh pass ‘Night of a Thousand Laugh.’’’

Another user of the micro-blogging service with the name, Hig-Wayne Cannon, who uses the handle @dosinclair, said he would be looking forward to the debate on national TV as it would be a clash of the titans. Cannon notes, “You can expect a volcanic grammatical literary of freestyles. What a collabo #Titans.”

However, some users of the micro-blogging service boasted that the wife of the President would come out tops after the debate. One of such users of the social network who beat his chest on this was Yakubu Dogara who tweets via @doyakubu.

He says, “I bet it that Dame Patience will win the debate as it will be unwise for the Prof. (Wole Soyinka) to attend much more utter a word.”

Another Nigerian tweeting via @hobalawon said Soyinka, who clocked 79 on Saturday, should simply steer clear of joining issues with the First Lady and save himself from being on the receiving end of public bashing which he described as “lethal weapon’’ emanating from her.

The social network user noted, “Prof, even at 79, we still need you around.”

Meanwhile, the exchange of diatribe between the duo has divided Nigerians on social networks. While a section of Nigerians argue that the First Lady shouldn’t have descended heavily on Soyinka and that the onslaught was unpresidential, others maintained that Soyinka got what he deserved.

On nairaland.com, a Nigerian with the name, My Time, argued, “I still maintain that Patience Jonathan has no moral justification to attack the professor. Her only portfolio is being the wife of the President. Soyinka has achieved a lot and demands respect. He is one of our national icons and a gift to this nation. He commands more respect outside the shores of this country than she does and can ever get.’’

An anonymous visitor on the blog noted, “I see this current government and her (Patience Jonathan) agenda losing their taste of civility and moral standing. I don’t see any reason why the First Lady should talk to an elderly statesman with such verbal brutality, irrespective of what he (Soyinka) said to her. Really, I think it’s quite unpresidential.’’

However, those who believe that Soyinka deserved Patience Jonathan’s onslaught against him said it was wrong for Soyinka to insult another man’s wife in the first place. They noted that since Soyinka had descended into an arena of conflict, he could not avoid such a treatment.

On lindaikeji..com, one Abidoh Jonathan said, “Why exactly are people abusing the First Lady? Prof. Wole Soyinka made a derogatory remark about her, and she reacted with an on-point come back. What is the big deal? If you ask me, I think the Prof stooped too low to comment and link the First Lady to the current crisis rocking Rivers State. He is a renowned Prof. but hello, she too is still the First Lady now and she deserves some respect.”

It is not a topic to be taken seriously by sound minded nigerians. Any nigerian that thinks Wole and patience have anything in common is he/herself crazy. Wole belongs to the rational nigerians like dem Fela and AChebe, while patience belongs to The irrational ones like den tinubu and amaechi.

They are two parallel entities and believing otherwise makes you a true nigerian,born_foolish.

This isn't the first time nairaland is being mentioned in the tabloids. I think El-rufai mentioned nairaland when he said something about the 40 laptop crew.

You'd be surprised that some of the writers in those newspapers are regulars here in nairaland (I know a few).

The punch has always got a column dedicated to 'what the social medial says' mostly for twitter, nairaland and the punch online comments.
I can remember in february/march when a neighbour of mine that knows my nairaland handle came to show me my comment on the 'dangote driving school graduates' published on the newspaper.

Good to be a member of an online forum like this. It's really Africa's largest online forum. It's also a thing of respect to know that our tiny voice could be heard by the powers that be. But seriously, sometimes, some of the so-called charlatans and titans on this forum, most especially the Politics section, tend to annoy me. They behave like they know everything.

For your information, Nairaland does not allow ANNONYMOUS VISITORs/guests to coment.
This goes to buttress the rot in Nigerian Media houses.
There had been several calls on other salient issues on Nairaland and none mentioned in the Punch Newspaper. Why would this be on Punch newspaper?
What is the author of that article trying to achieve? We do not need all this hype about Patience and Soyinka.
but remember my people would say that "he who fetched ant-infested firewood, should be ready to host the lizard to a lunch".

The primary function of an inverter is to convert Direct Current
DC power into standard Alternating Current AC this is because
whereas AC is the power supplied to industry and homes by the
main power grid or public utility the batteries of alternating power
systems store only DC power.
how do inverters work
inverters function by using a unidirectional DC power source
to mimic an alternating current AC power source. electronic
inverters are essentially oscillators that rapidly switch the
polarity of the DC power source, which effectively creates
a square wave.
working principle of inverters and types
an inverter is an electrical circuit capable of turning DC power
into AC power while at the same time regulating this voltage
current and frequency of the signal.

Re: Nairaland Mentioned In The Punch Newspapers by BIZZWEALTH: 8:54am On Jan 18
A modified sine wave inverter can be used for simple systems that don’t have any delicate electronics or audio equipment that may pick up the choppy wave and produce a hum. Old tube TVs and motors with brushes are usually ok with modified sine wave. Your digital clock will likely act funky, and battery rechargers quite often just plain won’t work. Some equipment may seem to be working fine, but may run hotter than with a pure sine wave and reduce the life of it.

Take heed if you’re considering buying a modified square wave inverter to shave a few bucks off your system costs. A whole raft of modern appliances won’t run as well and some not at all on this waveform:

Laser printers, photocopiers, and anything with an electrical component called a thyristor
Anything with a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), like those used in some washing machine controls
A few laptop computers
Some fluorescent lights with electronic ballasts
Some battery chargers for cordless tools
Some new furnaces and pellet heaters with microprocessor controls
Digital clocks with radios
Appliances having speed/microprocessor controls (like some sewing machines)
X-10 home automation systems
Medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators
In general, because the total harmonic distortion is higher in modified square wave inverters, motors will run hotter (less efficiently, consuming up to 30% more energy than with pure sine wave inverters), and likely not last as long. Additionally, a modified square wave inverter will often cause a “buzz” to be heard from audio devices and sometimes other appliances like ceiling fans and microwave ovens.

We liken using a modified sine wave inverter to running a car with square wheels versus a pure sine wave inverter like running a car with round wheels. In the first case the ride is going to be awful rough and depending on the sensitivity of the car’s occupants they may not survive the ride.
