Focus on drainage clearing, LASG urges residents

The Lagos State Government has urged residents to concentrate on cleaning drainages during the environmental sanitation exercise on Saturday.

Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, gave the advice in view of the heavy rains in the state.

Bello said in a statement on Wednesday that the ministry was intensifying dredging, cleaning and maintenance of drainage channels across the state as part of its strategies to reduce the incidence of flooding.

He said, “Lagosians are advised to actively participate in the sanitation exercise as the state government has dedicated subsequent months to the cleaning of drains, canals and other environmental nuisances, in view of anticipated heavy rains in the state.

“Lagosians are particularly encouraged to concentrate their efforts on the cleaning of drains and canals in their immediate environment as we gradually approach the peak of the rainy season.

“Presently, the Ministry of the Environment is intensifying its dredging, cleaning and maintenance of drainage channels across the state as part of its strategies to reduce the incidence of flooding.”

The commissioner warned Lagosians to desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels.

Bello said Lagosians should avoid patronising cart pushers as this was “inimical to the waste management policy of the state government, as whatever refuse they collect are always dumped inside canals which eventually causes flooding.”

The commissioner also appealed to Lagosians to cooperate with the government in its effort to rid the state of all forms of environmental abuses.

Punch

It seems Fashola, a lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is unaware of the functions of the LGAs as spelt out in the Fourth Schedule of the 1999 constitution:

(f) construction and maintenance of roads, streets, street lightings, drains and other public highways, parks, gardens, open spaces, or such public facilities as may be prescribed from time to time by the House of Assembly of a State;

How can a SAN continue to demonstrate cluelessness in SIMPLE, BASIC matters of governance
We pay taxes, levies, fines etc so the LGAs take care of PUBLIC spaces including gutters, but what do we have? They expect us to still do their job for which we already paid!

This is yet another senseless legacy of the former DICTATOR, General Buhari.
