A New York bus driver accused of being on a cell phone before a crash that claimed the life of an 8-month-old girl in West New York yesterday will make his first court appearance in Jersey City tomorrow morning on death by auto charges, authorities said.

Idowu Daramola, 48, of New York will make his first appearance in front of Hudson County court judge Sheila Venable in Jersey City tomorrow morning, officials said. Daramola was issued summonses for reckless driving and for using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle, but is also charged with the criminal offense of death by auto, officials said.

Yesterday afternoon, Daramola was driving a Sphinx Transportation bus on Kennedy Boulevard East in West New York, officials said. According to local resident Jose Serra, the bus was dropping off passengers at Boulevard East near 56th Street when it took off and the vehicle seemingly went out of control.

The bus jumped the curb and crashed into a nearby lamppost, which struck the baby in her carriage, Serra said. The bus then slammed into a tree, another lamppost and into a parked car, Serra said.

When the bus hit the parked car, it created a chain reaction that involved at least three other parked cars, one of which was occupied by four people who were taken to area hospitals for minor injuries, officials said.

West New York Police Officer Michael Stetson made a heroic effort to save the baby, eight-month-old Angela Paredes.

Stetson said the baby had no pulse, was not breathing and was bleeding from the head when he arrived on scene. Stetson said he began CPR at the scene in an attempt to save the child's life.

"After CPR, she was gasping every third breath I gave her," he said.

Officials said Angela apparently died in the ambulance on the way to Jersey City Medical Center, where Daramola and Angela's mother, Maylin Hogo, of 79th Street in North Bergen, were also taken.

Daramola is expected to appear in court in Jersey City around 9 a.m. tomorrow morning, officials said.
