China known for her ingenuity in different spheres of life, with a population that exceeds a billion and a work environment that fosters growth. It isn't much of a surprise when something spectacular comes from her inhabitants.

Chinese researchers describe how stem cells derived from urine could be used to generate solid organs and tissues, including teeth. Their study is published this week in the open-access journal Cell Regeneration. The researchers hope the technique might one day help provide new, tailor-made teeth for dental patients

The Chinese researchers, led by Duanqing Pei and Jinglei Cai at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Regenerative Biology and Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, generated stem cells from kidney lining cells in human urine and grew them under special conditions into sheets of epithelial tissue — a type that includes skin and teeth.

The scientists mixed mouse cells and human cells to create the different types of cells that make up a human tooth: pulp, dentin and enamel. The little creations were physically and structurally “quite similar” to human teeth, the study says, though they are not as strong -- yet -- as natural human teeth.

The idea of growing something eerily similar to the human tooth in a mouse gives me the creeps but if the unlimited volume of urine each individual produces daily that will be good "recycling". Further research still needs to be done, the scientist acknowledges but replacing a tooth lost from a bar fight will just be as easy peeing into a cup.
