When you do receive recommendations, don't forget to do your due diligence of the nursery and it's staff.

~ Remember to check the ratio of children per adult career. It really shouldn't be more than 1:3 for babies the age of your child.

~ Confirm that the nursery staff are well trained and conversant with first-aid procedures in case of emergencies, like how to treat / care for a child choking on an object.

~ Make sure you go when the nursery is busy and take note of the countenance of the children there. Are they happy? Are they pre-occupied with fun activities?

~ Health and safety: In case of a fire, do they have clear exit routes? Do they have fire safety equipment stored in there like extinguishers?

~ And most importantly, trust your instincts. There is no such thing as going over board when checking them out. You're practically trusting these people with your baby's life in your absence.
