Why does the Nigerian police force use the AK-47 assault rifle as its primary weapon instead of a pistol?

good question really

I think they should be divided,

so some carry no weapon at all, just baton, mace and whistle

Some pistol

specialist team for more advance weapon

Because criminals in Nigeria don't use pistols any longer. They use AK47 or MG24 machine guns.
You don't want our police to be out gunned in a duel.

It's not ak-47 rifle,it's a variant of the ak. plus that is what d gov. Can afford. Out of date, badly used guns. We do not have a standard. They collect anyone dey give them in a particular day

As long at it was replicated after the AK47 and fires a 7.62mm round from a rifled nozzle its as dangerous as any AK 47 made in the then USSR

That was exactly what I was going to say. While the police should not have an assault rifle as a personal weapon, the likelihood of running into armed criminals with such assault weapons makes it a requirement.

Same as the armed anti terrorism police that patrol pubic areas in France and Britain , they have SMG all day everyday

It's time dicon lace up their shoes and start working, gun manufacture for some of the more modern guns is not only cheaper but also higher quality compared to the AK47.

The AK47 is a time consuming gun to make, the wood butstock would require a lot of manual input , with the number of polymer manufacturing companies in Nigeria I'm sure one of them if contracted would happily invest in mould injectors to make Bakelite composite stocks.

Barrel cold forging is same for all weapons, chrome line the barrel and sort out your fire group. I can estimate from some of my research that it would cost some $70-120 less to manufacture a weapon like the standard colt M4A2 compared to our OBJ 006
