Igbos usually lack 100% unity anywhere they are, but are still kinda united thou, Rivers Igbos are regarded as a confused set of people starting from Ndoni, Ogba to Ikwerres, except Etche, Egbema and Obigbo (Asa/Ndoki). But WHY haven't the Rivers state Igbos unite for a better Identity just like the ANIOMA have done. Who can speak for them here on Nairaland.....

Add Omuma and probably Etche to it.
But on a serious note, Ikwerre, Ogba, Ndoni and Ekpeye are Igbos no matter how hard some of they fight to disclaim Igbo.

There's a difference between igbo and Igbo. When we say Igbo bu Igbo mma mma nu! It is meant for any Igbo that accepts being Igbo. If you scroll up and down this culture section you'll notice how active I've been in the Delta Igbo and Aboh thread. My interest there is in correcting some wrong notions and falsehood and not forcefully making them to come into the Igbo fold. The civil war has redefined Igbo for our good and this Igbo only includes Aniocha and Oshimili in Delta, the entire Southeast and Oyigbo plus Egbema in Rivers. The rest of the "Igbos" in Rivers and Delta are having inferiority complex and identity crisis and hence are not "Igbo bu Igbo". They are fighting to attain minority status and recognition and that is why they open threads to disclaim any affiliation with Igbo.

My mother is from Ikwerre in Rivers and Ikwerre is the largest ethnic group. They don't really need Etche and Ndoni etc to survive. Ndoni and Ogba are blessed with abundant petroleum resources and hence do not need anyone to share it with while Etche holds the title of the most sidelined. They speak purest Igbo and hence have a more difficult task to convince others to accept them as fellow minority.

Ekpeye people are not Igbos. The language they speak is not mutually intelligible with Igbo language even though many words are shared. They can be called cousin or brother but are clearly distinct.

What I mean is that you can only be Igbo when you accept being one. Ikwerres, Ogbas and Etches don't accept being Igbo but the language betrays them and is a deep cause for concern and makes their claim of being minority suspicious to the real minorities. This leaves them in a complex situation and could make them cruel to Southeasterners in order to prove to the other minorities that they are not part of these people.

Its like in the USA where there are fewer Eastern Europeans and they will try to claim minority even when Blacks and Hispanics clearly know that they are White. They will need extra efforts and even aggression to prove to Blacks and Hispanics that they are not Westerners but just happened to be White. Lol!

Now read this and understand how the real minorities feel about these non-Igbo but Igbo groups

August 1991 when Babangida used the Delta State Capital to pay his bride price to his Anioma in-laws. When I was invited to Asaba in May 1999 to give the hand over lecture from Military dictatorship to Civilian democratic government, and was asked by the out-going Military Administrator, Commander Feghabo, what I thought of the fact that only the southern Delta, particularly the Urhobos have so far produced civilian Governors for Delta State, my reply was simple. 'Delta State' is constituted by two States, Delta proper and Anioma. As long as the Delta Capital remains in Anioma, the Governors will come from the real Delta. Inspite of castigations in the press, by the Asagba of Asaba, and some other Anioma elites, I have remained firm in my views. The best solution is for the two entities to separate into two states with the Delta State Capital being at Warri. Anioma can then be a state with its capital at Asaba. Alternatively, Anioma can join Anambra State and become a member of the South Eastern group of states to which it truly belongs.

I'm half Ikwerre and I've had encounters. Even here on Nairaland you will notice threads trying to prove to other people that they are not Igbos but you won't see Ogoni, Okrika or Urhobo doing that. Its because Ogoni, Okrika and Urhobo are obviously not Igbo and hence have nothing to prove.

Monkey, its Igbo and not Ibo.
There are no threads labelling Efik, ibibio, annang, ogoni, isoko, ejagbam etc as Igbo. The groups they refer as Igbo are righthly Igbo especially in northern Rivers state.
I hope this settles in your empty skull, idiott.

This simply cannot happen, regardless of how anyone attempts to conceive of it. The political fate of Oyigbo is already tied to that of its Abia cousins. Etche/Omuma would rather stand alone than remaining conjoined with Ikwere. Ikwere does not even need the other groups. Ndoni and Ogba are virtually politically invisible, and I'm not sure Egbema would even care to be part of that union. I could be wrong.

Born and bred in Ikwerreland to an Ikwerre mother. So you should understand where I'm coming from. Isoama is just one of the tribes that makes up Igboland and not all Igbos. They call Ohaji, Egbema, Uratta and Oguta Isoama but we are not Isuamas.

Those who often try to deny their Igbo identity in what is now Rivers State are in fact 100% Igbo! If you are not Igbo, why make effort to deny it? Waht would it even profit someone to deny his/her heritage?

Unless you are a toddler, or one of those lying machines, you must agree that an organised and deliberate policy to check the political and economic power of Igbos in Nigeria was launched by the FG immediately after the war. Out-lying areas around PH where pre-fixed with the R's, just to confuse the authentic Igbo identity and corner oil money. Even up to 1976, the whole of Obigbo including Afam, Owaza and Egbema which are part of Igbo cultural areas were within Gowon's post-war packaged East- Central State. Having transversed Obigbo, Ikwerre-Etche, Ekpeye and Orashi rareas, I can confirm as I speak, that these areas still speak and write in Igbo alphabets (36), watch Igbo movies, play Igbo gospel songs, organise Igbo traditional marriage, chieftaincy (even 'ezeship') and burial ceremonies and very funnily, give their sons and daughters Igbo names!
Please is there an additional'Ikwerre, Etche or Ogba' meaning to Chibuike and Amaechi apart from 'God is strength' and 'let the family tree continue' respectively

my wife is Igbo from Rivers state, Port-Harcourt to be precise. Her father will skin u alive if u dare say they're not Igbo. All of his children were given Igbo names. He's a proud Igbo. I asked him one certain time, that some said that ph is not Igbo. He said I should not mind them, that those denying igbos were mainly the ones benefited immensely from abandon property. He told me the the divide/rule tactics of the northerners is over. He even asked me to follow him to church one sunday which I did. To my greatest surprise, the mass that day was done in Igbo.
