In 2005 NigeriaSat-1 was the first satellite to send back pictures of the east coast of the US following Hurricane Katrina, says Nice. And the orbiter contributed images to aid workers following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

never knew anything good can come out of naija. how come the only times our good deeds are mentioned are when they are been used against us.

We need now a 100% homegrown one.

We should also build for ourselves of have built for us a large observatory somewhere in that their modest facilities in Abuja. The aim being to give the place a spacey feel and to facilitate interest among young Nigerians (school trips, and primary school projects and all that).

NASRDA said the next Nigerian satellite to be launched in "2015" will be built and launched in Nigeria.
Pretty exciting stuff.

Please sir,
the satellite collects DATA not DATE. When you grow up, you'll come to appreciate why we need a satellite. It's a little higher than your level to comprehend.

what has the number of people living in Nigeria got to do with the monitoring of crop yield, natural disasters, weather pattern, border, regional and continental surveillance?
Both are mutually exclusive.
Btw,it will be almost impossible to get the real number of people living in Nigeria due to many factors.

Nigeria as well as africans are very naieve.
Everything is always a misplacement of priority to them.
Smh.
India just unveiled their indigenous nuclear powered submarine as well as their aircraft carrier.
They also want to go to mars this year.
Ironically, india also has more poor people than africa, yet that has not stopped them from investing in highly advanced technology.
We should borrow a leaf from india and begin to look to the future and not just immediate gains.

meetmonde: , we can delineate flood plains, detect movements of arms, monitor relative changes in the country and carry out mineral explorations. Although the satellite needs improvements in terms of spartial, spectral resolution
Detect , monitor what? The man made disaster lying on our highways and cities, heaps of dirt enough to cause major epidemic in all cities in naija, abi the influx of goods across our porous border after paying our security officials(Police, customs, Immigration, NDLEA, FAAN, etc) what is govt. doing to address it?.
Let stop deceiving ourselves as a nation and face the basic things required to move us forward. Must we do follow follow just to retain the name Giant of africa.

The point is that we have to crawl before running.

We still do not have a proper national database which will help in tackling insurgency, planning infrastructure, projecting government expenses e.t.c

The database doesn't have to be 100% accurate but should be close enough.

Have these people never heard of cost/benefit before.

Without a national database we continue to move in circle , we going nowhere.
The amount spent on space program so far if spent judiciously on Agriculture by now we should be seeing results.
We now talking of building our satellite hw?. Some official already thinking ahead of means to get free cash from govt.

FlamingGun: Yes, Nigeria has a space programme. Since 2003 the West African country has been operating its own satellites, three of which are currently collecting data from Earth orbit. But this week Nigeria's space agency came under fire after UK newspaper the Daily Mail reported on British politicians questioning why Nigeria is spending money on satellites while accepting foreign aid for the large proportion of its citizens who live in poverty.

In fact, the country's satellites support food production in the region and disaster relief around the world – including helping with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the US.

Nigeria's National Space Research & Development Agency (NASRDA) launched its first orbiter, NigeriaSat-1, in 2003. The roughly $13 million cost was paid for by the Nigerian government, but it was built by Surrey Space Technology (SST) in the UK and launched from a Russian spaceport.

The spacecraft was equipped with high-resolution optical and infrared cameras. "They are there to look at agriculture production, improving food security," says Audrey Nice of SST. The satellite was also designed for environmental monitoring, such as tracking desertification and even locust swarms.
Eye on disaster

NigeriaSat-1 lasted until 2012, four years longer than expected. It was succeeded by NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X, which both launched in 2011 carrying similar instruments. These satellites were also made at SST, with Nigerian engineers helping to build the latter. In addition to a continued environmental mission, the satellites' high-resolution images of the country will help Nigeria review electoral boundaries ahead of its general elections in 2015.

The NigeriaSats are also part of the international Disaster Monitoring Constellation, coordinated by SST. This network of satellites includes Chinese, Spanish and UK spacecraft that can provide rapid images from space when environmental disasters strike.

In 2005 NigeriaSat-1 was the first satellite to send back pictures of the east coast of the US following Hurricane Katrina, says Nice. And the orbiter contributed images to aid workers following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Nigeria provides disaster-related imagery for free, but the country generates income from the satellites by selling other image data.

NASRDA also commissioned a Chinese-built communications satellite, NigComSat-1, that launched from China in 2007. The satellite lost power a year later and was replaced in 2011 by NigComSat-1R, which is currently providing broadcast and internet services in Nigeria.
