Go and create jobs [without job experience], Akala, provost tell graduating students

By Segun Olugbile

The Alayande College of Education, Oyo, Oyo State, has graduated 2,651 students with the State Governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, and the college provost, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, challenging the graduating students to create job for themselves as government alone could not absorb them.

According to them, the graduating students have no reason to remain jobless because the college had fortified them with both theoretical and practical skills needed to excel in their chosen fields.

Ogunmola, who listed various achievements recorded under his tenure, hinted that the college had affiliated with the University of Ado-Ekiti in order to facilitate its full-time degree programmes that would commence soon.

He charged the students to keep improving themselves, saying that there was no end to learning.

He also urged them to be responsible, hardworking and trustworthy.

Alao-Akala, while speaking at the occasion, said that to ensure qualitative education, his administration had devoted 60 per cent of the total budget in the current fiscal year to education despite competing pressing needs.

This, he said, was because his government placed high premium on education, as the nation could not overcome its numerous problems without education.

According to him, the funding of formal education in a rapidly growing population of children and youth in Nigeria can be daunting.

He added that apart from salaries and allowances of academic and non-academic staff, a lot of fund was being committed to the maintenance of existing facilities, supply of equipment required for sound and qualitative education and equipment for accreditation and re-accreditation.

The governor, therefore, remarked that since government alone could not fund education, non-governmental organisations, socio-cultural groups and alumni associations of tertiary institutions should step forward to complement government’s effort.

He told the graduating students to look inward and create job for themselves, saying government could not employ all of them.

“As a result of the down-turn in the economy of the country and the global economic problems, not all of you will get jobs immediately. You are therefore requested to think of schemes in which you can gainfully engage yourselves,” he added.

At least he's being truthful. he's telling them that the governor they elected is not interested in creating jobs for them so, they can as well bail on time.
