i really love this part of the story "government plans to introduce loans to the students throughout their period in the university so as to cushion the effect of the financial hardship on the students" ....but na wash! when there's no even 30% job guarantee in the country, confused sets of people ....
Re: FG Breaks-Off ASUU Negotiation, To Introduce Student Loans by dollyparton(m): 11:58am On Aug 28, 2013
Who is deceiving who? FG wants to do as it always does, cut corners. Nigerian students will only be foolish to accept these terms. Will the student loans refurbish the libraries and build new ones? Will it be responsible for the rehabilitation of the laboratories as well as the establishment of new ones? Will it build more hostels and classrooms? Will it upgrade facilities generally on campus. Only fools will accept these terms. We Nigerian students say no to loans, don't make us debtors to you, all we want is proper funding of the education sector.

The FG wants to push the burden of earned allowance to the universities, the universities have been advised to increase school fees by way of introducing tuition fee of nothing less than 50000. Government now says they will give students loans to pay these fees. Una don see wer this thing they happen??

Make una support ASUU o; cos ANYIM and SUSWAM no get any beta plan for we Nigerian students.

That's what the FG is pushing for. And after a few years another govt may come and scrap the loan meanwhile the school fees remains high and meeting the needs of the lecturers. Who loses then? The students of course. How many of them can afford the high fee when the load is scrapped? How many of them can access the loan when they bring out the strigent conditions they must meet to get the loan? How many can pay back the loan? Will the committee that will handle the loan be fair enough to give it to only students and not their family members who are in one financial need or the other? Nigerian govt cannot be trusted. They can't afford 97b of 3 years arrears of earned allowances and other projects now for ASUU but they can afford more than that to give loan to thousands of students accross the country, year in year out. STORY.

Bro since the student will only pay back when he gets a job thats good, but... i dont think that will ever happen cause they know there is no job so they wont place money where it cant be recoverd so guys dont depend on that but keep your ears on the ground should FG do that then... LOL

My friend, what exactly is it that you assumed we don't understand? The Nigerian govt has made the position known to us & you are there talking shyts.

Prophet Hosea was actually right when he lamented in "Hosea 4:6" "That his people perished because the lack knowledge" while I'm here, crying out laud today that fellow Nigerians especially like Nigerian whose post I have quoted, are suffering from linguistic Kwashiokors poverty mentality that the Nigerian govt has implanted in their lives.

My friend will you shut the hell up, you are full of knowledge yet can't assimilate a simple idea of change.

alexleo:
And you fail to realize that government universities will now increase their fees to 700k and above like the private universities. By the time Gej leaves, another govt comes in an scraps the loan thing or even reduce it by 50 percent under this same claim that govt is running short of fund. Will the students go on strike then? If they do who will listen to them? With that high fees how many Nigerians can afford university education for their children if that happens. Nigeria govt has a culture of failing to keep promises and agreement. Same way they are failing lecturers today is the way they ll fail students in the loan thing as time goes on. Infact the one they ll do to students will be worse. Just be balanced in your analysis. Nigerian govt is never to be trusted.

Nobody failed to realize there will be increase in fees, that is the essence of student loans to pay the fees. Government will not be funding people, but will be guaranteeing their loans. There is no issue of reversal.

There are several areas this is going to touch on by its implication.
1. Issue of Over production of Bachelors:
Only people who are really interested in design work will train for Bachelors. The employers will also be forced to review there demands for Bachelor holders. Hence moving towards the mid skilled manpower (2 years degrees) we require for proper economic growth.

2. Higher Quality Training in the Long run
-When you remove excessive demand for Bachelors on both the side of employers and employees, you will force the Universities into competitions to stay alive. They will become innovative on how to improve and attract students who in this case are there clients and main source of funding.
-On the part of the student, if the school needs your money for funding, they become more responsive to your needs. They avoid strikes, change inefficient systems in order to avoid loosing you and your money. Your lecturers will see a direct link between how they teach you and their payment, hence abuses will be minimized.

3. Research: Instead of dishing out money to non-researching lecturers, Universities will be forced to fight for extra funding from research grants, hence will look to retain lecturers with relevant research prowess. This will improve the relevance and utility of trainings, churning out graduates with the right kind of new ideas and abilities that will create jobs that will employ the more massive population with 2 year degrees.

With fuel subsidy, the story was that it was the rich that were enjoying it and palliatives would be provided! And it was the opposition blamed for "politicising" it! But now no palliatives have shown, nobody remembers the oppostion and Nigerians are suffering!

With school fees, again, it is the opposition and student loans which effectively mean that rather than government supporting your education, you (in a country where there are no jobs) are indebted more or less for life! And again the government shirks responsibility!

Yet PEJ can go around with 200 cars as escorts, get federal Billions to spend on "we-we" clothing to campaign, fight an elected governor and use federal funds to go around on private jets! GEJ himself can pay a soldier 32,000 and a militant 65,000! Tompolo just bought a private jet, 365 Billion just disappeared yet mercenary iweala feels Nigeria is so broke that all we can afford is paying trillions to the less than 500 reps and senators!

There are investments that lead to progress and those that lead to ruin! Education is the poster child for development and even 40% of the budget isn't too much but here, 8% is for education whist most of the rest is stolen or misappropriated in readiness for 2015! Yet this by a man and govt that has nothing to offer except travelling around the world and accussing "opposition" of everything from having diahrrea to non-supply of power!

Sad! But then when nobody could face Abacha, he faced himself! Our actions will judge and pass judgement on us no matter how we try to deflect truth!

The government expects the students to re-pay the loans after graduation provided they get jobs of their choice. It however could not be ascertained how the loan to the students would compel the lecturers to call off the strike

i doubt if the student loan system can work here in Nigeria and how do they expect the student to return the loan after graduation when there is no Job in the Country..... this governmt sef na something else.

This is coming from a graduate that must ve done a critical analysis on the economy. Ur post is the most intelligent post on this topic. Bachelor's degree ve been bastardized in Nigeria, that's why graduates are employed to do jobs of primary school leavers. Govt should concentrate more on achieving quality primary and secondary education by introducing vocational subjects in the curriculum from primary level. Technical/ vocational secondary education should also be given attention and encouraged. Govt should also encourage more people to acquire middle level qualifications like ND and NCE by removing all forms of discrimination against them, so that they can effectively drive the economy, by so doing there will be less need for people to acquire Bsc degrees to get jobs, and we will have very few people wit bachelor's degrees. This will even improve the quality of the Bachelor's degree and the quality of the academic work work done in the university. Government really need to review our educational system and policies. I'm with u bro!

One of the biggest set backs in the Nigerian educational system is ASUU. They should be ashamed of themselves for helping the country to churn out low quality graduates. In the area of research they have also failed. Dr Issah Fagge should be asked how many quality and sensible research he has done in the past 10 years? Bunch of greedy employees!

Emmy9ite: Season 3, episode 4. Watch ASUU strikers in cinemas near you.

On a serious note; Students loan won't compel ASUU to cease the strike. FG should pay what they owe ASUU. I can't work for you and you ask me to renegotiate my pay after my work . it doesn't happen anywhere in the world.
