BlackBerry may have to look for new owners to captain the capsizing ship as new IDC report places the smartphone company at a record 4th position in the mobile market-share.

International Data Corporation IDC latest statistics for the 2nd quarter shows Blackberry dropping market share from 7.7 to 2.9% while Windows Phones saw a slight increase from 3.1% to 3.7%. Android holds the lead with 80% and iOS settling at 13.2%.

This figure isn’t unconnected with BlackBerry’s decision to set up a committee to explore strategic alternatives in hopes of improving the company’s value and not excluding the options such as selling the company.

BlackBerry 10 which was released earlier failed in an embarrassing attempt to strengthen the company’s relevance in the smartphone world.

While the guys at BlackBerry headquarters may think selling the company altogether may prevent BlackBerry’s brand from going into oblivion, Gartner analyst Bill Menezes thinks otherwise. “Even new ownership “[is] not going to address how the company restores itself.” Said
