My Reappraisal Of The Bible by UyiIredia(m): 2:17pm On Sep 11, 2013
Started clumsily today, though I just got the digital Bible I wanted to use, yesterday. I've been using Olivetree ever since I had an iTouch. In any case, I hope I have the discipline required to see this through. Suggestions from everyone are welcome and much-needed since I want to have, nas much as possible, a holistic view on the Bible. Just started out with a 3-month New Testament reading plan, NKJV is my preffered though I'm using KJV.

Use a paper bible. Dead tree books are far better than electronic if you're reading for long periods.

Avoid concordances and guides. they only waste your time and stop you from gaining your own understanding of the text.

Try and read a whole book a day or split the bigger books into halves or thirds and reach each part en bloc. Avoid readding single chapters at a time.

Remember that there were no chapters and verses in the original text so read each book continuously so as not to lose context.

Remember that a huge part of what they've been teaching you in church is wrong. Don't let preconceived notions affect your understanding of the text. By the time you're done you'll be shocked at how ignorant the average pastor is. They think they already know so they never bother to learn.

Its generally better to read the whole bible starting with the old testament. It provides a lot of much needed context and is not as long and boring as you think (apart fro Job, that book is boring as shït).

Try and avoid telling other Christians what you are doing until you've finished. They'll probably just hinder you while trying to "help".

Assimilate and organized the facts in the same way you would when you are reading Shakespear or Things Fall Apart.
If you read it from a religious point of view, then you might miss the essential fine prints.

Actually, they have some interesting parts, in truth, the most boring is Numbers.

Sure. Input from all sides are welcome. And I would be most certainly reading it with a different perspective, than say, 4 years ago.

I actually really enjoyed reading both of them. Give give a nice view of how people used to think back in the day. And all those their crazy laws make you think thoughts most Christians don't like thinking.

Most boring books: Job, Ezekiel, Isaiah in descending order.

You need to pray for an hour before reading for proper illumination. grin

Hope this helps

Actually a torchlight would give better illumination than any prayer ever will.

Luckily, your God didn't get to my planet. We marvel at your desperate desire to fill your ignorance with an imaginary friend.

Laudable thing you are doing there OP,reading the bible that is. I suggest you read it with an open mind barring all preconceived notions. That way you may see the light of the words you read as they seem to jump out the pages and come alive with a life of their own.

Happy reading.
