The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has installed installed seven brand new X-ray scanning machines at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, five at the cargo basement of the international terminal, one at the Hajj and Cargo terminal and another at the airport’s domestic terminal 1, FAAN spokesman, Mr. Yakubu Dati, has said.

This he said is in addition to existing security equipment at the airport.
He said all the other airports in the county are also benefitting from the installation of these new scanning machines, which include cargo screening machines, carry-on screening machines, hand-held metal detectors, 3-D body scanners, hold baggage screening machines and walk-through metal
detectors.
“These scanners will help to ensure increased security surveillance of outgoing baggage destined for aircraft bulk hold. This is in addition to the CCTV cameras installed within the airports, which will ensure that illegal or unapproved luggage are not loaded onto the aircraft. It will also help check pilfering of luggage” he said.
He said the provision of these new security equipment was also necessitated by the expansion and remodelling of airports, the structural designs of which were altered.

NAMA begins calibration of Navigational equipment at airports

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, (NAMA) has commenced calibration of navigational equipment at some airports and en route stations across the country to enhance air safety.

According to statement by the Agency on Sunday, the calibration exercise started at the weekend in Lagos with the routine calibration of the two Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Very High Omni-directional Radio Range/Distance Measuring Equipment (VOR/DME) and the Path Approach Precision Indicator (PAPI) of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Equipment being calibrated include the recently installed ILS/DME, CVOR/DME at Enugu airport, Makurdi and Kanji.

The newly installed air field lighting system at Makurdi will equally be flight- checked by Flight Calibration Services of the United Kingdom using DA42 multi-purpose platform aircraft.

Other navigational aids being calibrated are Conventional Omni-Directional Radio Frequency (CVOR), Instrument Landing System (ILS), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) Very High Omni-Directional Radio Frequency (VOR) all located in Uyo, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt.

Similarly, Communication radio coverage check for Lagos and Kano area control centres will be undertaken during the calibration exercise
.

The Managing Director of the Agency Engineer Mazi Nnamdi Udoh, disclosed that the exercise would last for fourteen days, explaining that the calibration of the navaids would assist in putting all the navigational aids in proper shape at these airports and en-route stations.

NAMA’s boss appealed to airlines to support the Agency in its safety drive by clearing their outstanding debts.

NIMET Develops Numeric Weather Prediction Capability

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has developed a numeric weather prediction capability.

The effort which the agency called NIMET-COSMOS-Model is a cutting edge technique of weather prediction using models of the atmosphere and computational techniques. This is just as it said it would seek ISO Certification for its state-of-the art instrument calibration workshop.

Director-General of NIMET, Dr Anthony Anuforom, who made this disclosure during a media briefing at the National Weather and Climate Forecasting Centre (NWCFC) in Abuja, weekend, said the equipment, when commercialised, would generate about N20billion annually and would revolutionise the way weather forecasting is done.

Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) is used by specialised weather forecasting agencies all over the world, but NIMET said its NWP cosmos –model, which has a partial resolution of 7 kilometres, uses local parameters more relevant to the nation’s environment and this sets it apart from other NWPs used elsewhere making NIMET the only agency in the world with the German-built equipment.

According to him, the equipment with several applications in the marine, environment, agriculture sectors of the economy among others, would enhance safety in the nation’s aviation sector by generating useful products.

Anuforom, who said that the UK Meteorological Office generated about N50billion in 2012, by commercialising its weather forecast technology services to the relevant sectors of the British economy, added that the agency would soon toe the same line using its NWP cosmos model for massive revenue generation.

“We are going to have a sheet in realising our goals by commercialising the NWP for revenue generation. It will do a lot for us in achieving this goal. It will assist in promoting safety in the aviation sector.

“If UK Met can make about N50 billion per annum in 2012 for rendering weather forecast services, NIMET through the NWP should be able to make at least N20 billion.”

Anuforom regretted that with the exception of operators in the aviation sector, no other organisation or corporate body patronise the agency in terms of weather forecast service stressing that as soon as sensitisation efforts were completed, the agency would spare no time in commercialising its products as was the practice all over the world

It should be included asap.
Passed through the airport recently but could not believe what I saw sad.
