It is crass irresponsibility on the part of Punch Newspaper to embark on slanderous endeavor such as branding “Enugu State” as dirty while, in fact, it meant the “City of Enugu” In attempt to show measure of uncivilized loudmouth and inherent tribal bias, the newspaper used a forged Igbo name as the writer of the idiotic article. It is funny to read about one Mr. Christian Diru, who shuttles between London and Enugu, suddenly concluded that Enugu State is dirty because International Airport is now operational in Enugu City. I guess Mr. Christian Diru has not seen Lagos State while on the alleged shuttles between London and Enugu. 2 Likes |

The Lagos and Ogun State governments have signified their intention to work together in the area of municipal waste management in order to rid the urban centres of filth. As a first step in the new working relationship, a team from seven local government councils from Ogun State came on a working visit to the Lagos Waste Management Authority last week to understudy LAWMA with a view to replicating some of its achievements in their state. The visitors came from Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South, Obafemi Owode, Ado-Odo Ota, Shagamu, Ijebu-Ode and Ifo local governments and were led by a consultant to the Ogun State Government on waste management, who is also the Chairman, Global Environment Technology, Mr Anthony Ojeshina. The delegation visited the Olusosun landfill site in Ojota, the Simpson Transfer Loading Station and the Earthcare waste-to-wealth plant in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, to have first hand. experience of how Lagos was combating waste and to compare notes. The team had earlier attended a seminar organised by the Ogun State Government on waste management in urban centres, where the Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya, enlightened them on the efforts of the Lagos State Government to successfully manage urban waste in a sustainable manner. Ojeshina had earlier told our correspondent at the Olusosun landfill site that the Ogun officials were in Lagos to see the state‘s waste management model and how LAWMA had achieved such a feat within a short period of time. According to him, waste management used to be a big challenge in Lagos before the reinvigoration of LAWMA, which he said had done well in creating a cleaner environment in the state. He added that the working partnership became necessary because of the contiguous nature of the two states that had made it difficult to identified clear cut geographical boundaries. Ojeshina said that the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Dainel, was serious about the issue of sustainable waste management, adding that comparing notes with Lagos and sharing its experience would enable the state to have a sustainable waste management programme. A member of the visiting team from Abeokuta North Local Government, Mrs. Kemi Talabi, commended LAWMA for its management of the Olusosun landfill that used to pollute the neighbourhood with offensive odour, while also commending the introduction of TLS as replacements for incinerators. Mr. Kayode Ojoade from Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Council, also appreciated the effort. of the Lagos State Government in the area of waste collection and disposal, but suggested that workers at the landfill site should be well catered and properly cleaned up after each day‘s work. Oresanya said it took a lot of determination and conviction to get to the level where the authority was now, explaining that at a time, LAWMA workers had to sacrifice half of their salaries for the survival of the organisation. The LAWMA boss said that the authority was ready to partner with any government in the federation to address waste management. http://news2.onlinenigeria.com/news/general/16231-Ogun-understudies-LAWMA-waste-management.txt |

Real Reviews of the Lagos Airport Without doubt the worst airport in the world and I've travelled through more than 100. Dingy, gloomy, unbearably hot and hours to get through immigration where two bored officials slowly plod through hundreds of arriving passengers. Outside a line of policemen asks for spurious vaccination card checks and expect $10 bribe to let you pass. The car park and pick up area is a third world dusty chaos that takes another hour to navigate. When departing from the airport its the same thing in reverse so leave hours to get your flight. travel on a rotational basis so I am in this airport up to 12 times per year. The reputation described by others does exist but there are times it's better than others. The only thing consistent about it is that the routine is always changing when coming through immigration. "Stand here, now go over there. Come back here." The immigration officials are either pretty much clueless or they do this for a reason. Luggage can be a painful process but even when I have had a bag not arrive with me (went to Port Harcourt on Lufthansa as part of a continuing leg for that plane) I did eventually get it back. The biggest issue is what you do outside the airport. Nobody helps for free, and nobody is friendly for free. When departing, if you are early you can go up to Abibi's which is on the 2nd floor and visible from all check in areas. It's expensive though. Going through the process of getting out is hit and miss. The airlines I've flown with have been courteous and professional. Fast tracking through immigration is nothing special. Most of the people working these lines make you glad you are leaving the country. My first trip to Nigeria was everything I expected. When I landed I had no idea where to go as the signs are not clear. Airport staff are very disorganized, they push passengers from one line to the other and then back again. It was very confusing, but overall security check was fine. Waiting for the luggage took quite a while and when I tried to get luggage trolley they said you could not pay by card anywhere. On the way out I was stopped by healthcare officers. They checked both my pieces of luggage. When I thought I was done one of the officers said there was a problem with my vaccinations and would not listen to my explanation. My husband was waiting outside and they would not even let him near me saying I would be deported. When I finally managed to get though the last "security check" with the officer simply walked away and left me in the middle of the airport. Good job my husband managed to find me! That was my first trip to otherwise a beautiful country and as I am going back there again this week I do hope my experience will be much better. Horrible! The worst travel experience ever. 4.5 hours from arriving at the airport to boarding the plane (we almost missed the flight). Bribery will get you ahead of the lines and around the first level of security. Give yourself most of the day to get to the gate. It was horrific. http://www.airlinequality.com/Airports/Airport_forum/los.htm |
