2 year old Francis Bawaba, a Nigerian based in Spain was this weekend arrested by the men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with 6.5kg high grade Braziillian cocaine.

Bawaba was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed airport in Lagos as he arrived aboard an Etihad flight. NDLEA officials found 364 wraps of cocaine said to be worth N72million concealed in the luggage of the trafficker. They said he took off from Malpensa Milan and collected the drug on transit while in Abudhabi.

Bawaba told officials that he agreed to carry the drugs because of a promise of N3.3million by his handlers. "This is my first time and I was lured with N3.3million. I used to work at a construction company in Madrid but due to the Economic meltdown, it has been difficult securing a job". he said.

NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar gave the
name of the 32 year-old suspect as Francis Bawaba.

“Our investigation has revealed that the suspect took off from
Malpensa, Milan and collected the drug while on transit at
Abudhabi. He had given us very useful information that we are
already working on,” Hamza said.

According to the suspect, his concern was how his pregnant wife
and two children would cope while serving punishment for his
actions.

“This is my first time of smuggling drugs and I was lured with an
offer of N3.3 million. I used to work in construction sites in Madrid
to earn a living but it has been difficult securing a job since the
global economic meltdown. I collected the drug while on transit at
Abudhabi on my way from Milan. I never knew that I would be
caught here in Nigeria. My plan was to invest the money in
business. Since my arrest I have been unable to eat because I do
not know how my pregnant wife and two kids will cope without my
financial support,” Francis who hails from Imo State lamented.

ATTEMPTS by a Nigerian living in Madrid, Spain to earn
N3.3 million for smuggling 6.490 kilogrammes of high-grade
Brazilian cocaine have hit the rocks as anti-narcotic officials
have arrested him.

Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport
(MMIA), Lagos made the arrest and seizure at the weekend.

The 364 wraps of cocaine prepared for ingestion and hidden inside
his hand luggage is valued at N72 million. Officials detected the
drug during the inward screening of passengers on an Etihad flight.
NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar gave the
name of the 32 year-old suspect as Francis Bawaba.

“Our investigation has revealed that the suspect took off from
Malpensa, Milan and collected the drug while on transit at

not know how my pregnant wife and two kids will cope without my
financial support,” Francis who hails from Imo State lamented.
Speaking on the frequent arrests by the Agency, the Chairman,
Alhaji Ahmadu Giade assured culprits of maximum penalty for drug
trafficking offences.

According to him: “The essence of punishment is to correct the
offender and deter people from indulging in a crime. Drug trafficking
demands stiffer punishment to serve as deterrent because of the
high profit it generates. The Agency will continue to ensure that the
appropriate punishment is enforced at all times. Stakeholders in the
criminal justice system must understand that stringent punishment
is crucial to a sustainable victory in the anti-narcotic campaign,”
Giade said.

The suspect would soon be charged to court.
