The federal government will spend N39.83 billion on the rehabilitation and expansion of the 6.7km Villa roundabout-Apo road.
Information Minister Labaran Maku made this known while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
He said the council approved the project following the adoption of a memo brought by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, seeking approval for the rehabilitation and expansion of the “Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) from Villa roundabout to the OSEX/Ring Road 1(RR1) junction including five interchanges.”
Maku, who said the FEC approved the contract in favour of Messrs CGZ Nig Ltd assured that the project would provide employment opportunities for about 1,500 professionals, artisans as well as skilled and unskilled labour.
He said: “In order to ensure free flow of traffic and significantly reduce travel time in and out of the city, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) intends to embark on the rehabilitation and expansion of the OSEX from the Villa roundabout to the OSEX / RR1 junction. The existing segment of the OSEX from the Villa roundabout to RR1 is only partially developed with a two-lane main carriage way and one two-lane service carriageway as against the 10-lane expressway provided in the Abuja Master Plan.”

^^^Funnily enough there was no prevaricating and faffing about before the money was found for this project...... it didn't take a decade for them to award the contract! Same can't be said for the 2nd Niger bridge that would impact more lives and make more economic sense.

I think u should be more considerate in your approach to this topic. To construct a road of 1km cost over N15m, this road is near 7km. Also the road in going to be expanded meaning it would cost more. Also the road has a round about, more money. The road my have additional utilities like streetlamps, which may require solar panels, that alone na another cost. So you see why u need to be more considerate?

U̶̲̥̅̊ do knw what U̶̲̥̅̊ are saying. What consideration is that? To construct 1km of with N6b. Common that's outrageous.

Everytime the govt does something people like will criticise. If N20m is spent on that 1km, and it is not done properly, won't u still be the one saying the govt didn't do it well?
If you want to build a regular road that money would have been too much. But the road will have 10 lanes according to the Minister, and it would have a roundabout. So what it means is that there maybe 10 roads, each has 6.7km. So it is different from what you may have in mind, of maybe just one single 6.7km road for 40b.

FG are misplacing their priorities here.

The Niger Bridge is on of the most economically important roads in Nigeria. It ought to rank high on their priority scale........Or else they want to use it to string along the Igbo folks till 2019??

The Second Niger bridge has already passed the stage of contract awards. Work on the particular road mentioned on this thread may not commence even in 2 months time. There's always a lag between contract award and actual commencement of work.

In addition, the road in question on this thread is already in the budget of FCT. It is not the FCT that will build Second Niger Bridge, rather it is the ministry of works. The FCT minister will not stop working because the minister of works is not building the Second Niger Bridge.

The Second Niger Bridge is not wholly FG funded project. It is a PPP. PPP projects at the federal level is a very laborous process. Contract has been awarded and preliminary works will be concluded this Oct. Once ground braking happens before the end of the year, the rest will a smooth sail. GEJ knows that he cant come to campaign in the southeast in 2015 without commencement of actual work and the work reaching atleast 50-40% completion.

Story! Story!!

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was awarded about the same time the SNB was awarded. It was cancelled and re-awarded and work has commenced because GEJ realises the economic importance of the region and the resilience of its people. He is also aware of those whose ultimatums mean nothing
