Godyke: Please I want the aviation experts in the house to throw more light on the possibility of an aircraft tyre to burst while airborne. The report did not say the tyre bursted during take off while its still on ground.
It is assumed that the Tyre bursted even while it is still climbing and while entire tyres are yet to be retracted. If there was a need to make an emergency landing, why not return to the same KANO airport rather than going all the way to Sokoto for landing. Was there a stop over plan in Sokoto prior to this incident? If the plane could still land why not proceed on the flight since the flight can still land anyway other tyres . The whole story is not too clear.

I'm no expert but from my experience, not saying it can't happen, but it's next to impossible. The tires are more likely to burst during takeoff, or shortly after takeoff or landing and landing.

Understand this:

When an airplane takes off, the pilot calls out V2 "Positive Rate, Gear Up". Positive Rate means they're exiting the take-off roll sequence and transitioning into "CLIMB" sequence and it's okay to start climbing out now OR they have a positive rate of climb. This means during climb, the landing gear MUST BE retracted, if not, the gear causes a DRAG hence the Gear up. So no, it's nearly impossible for the tires to burst when climbing because to climb successfully, the gears has to be retracted.

Now if the tires were unknowingly burst during takeoff, every tire has a sensor and the pilot can see exactly which one is burst, the pilot will abort takeoff before V1 or if he exceeded the speed, the pilot will takeoff and then attempt to land. This is to avert the Concorde crisis (although there were several issues as well).

There could be reasons why he may not land immediately, most likely due to weight, this is a 747 laden with 400+ pax and luggage and fuel. When you takeoff, your takeoff weight is usually more than the landing weight and if he has to dump some fuel or fly out over a certain distance before he's able to land, then that will be a reason why he flew out to Sokoto to land. There's a landing chart for each speed, if you weight is off chart and you attempt to land, well, the laws of aerodynamics will be calling on you ... aka CRASH.
