The main issue is constant power supply. Privatization always comes with hike in prices in the short-run. However, competition will certainly bring down the prices in the long-run, a case study of what happened in the Telecom industry at the post-privatization era. My only annoyance is total lack of power supply in Satellite Town, Lagos. Ever since I moved to this area 4yrs ago, there has been perennial power problem till date. Even when others are celebrating 20hrs/24hrs power supply in some quarters, Satellite town can not boast of 1hr power supply in a day. Worstill, you have to stay in darkness from Monday to Sunday. It is so pathetic here in Satellite Town. And it appears there is no end in sight to this malady.

How will the competition work? When Ikeja distribution company increases tariff, you would move your house to the Eko distribution company jurisdiction or you want build your own distribution cable from the Ibadan zone?

What do you expect? At least in Lagos; ikeja, VI and yaba would have constant power because they can pay... Investors would make the necessary investments in these localities. However, the people at Iju, Ikorodu, Matogun etc esp., in those areas that do not fall in the master plan of the state can continue to leave in darkness moreover, they can not pay either.

Please stop spewing this sort of "egalitarian nonsense"! (No offense intended, and l really meant that)

Its not a question of "they can pay", this is a case of sheer "attempted" EXPLOITATION.

These "private investors" knew what the "tariff structure" was from inception.
They studied "all the figures" together with NERC and together, they arrived at a "profitable tariff structure" for the investors.
They signed the MOU and based on that, bidded and won the contract to manage these public utility companies, privately.
And the agreement has "provisions for periodic review" (if need be), as well!

Bunch of thieves, having acquired the license now, they have not even started ANY DELIVERY, they are already talking about increasing tariffs!

As usual with everything Nigerian, "UNBRIDLED EXPLOITATION" IS ALWAYS THE CORE OF OUR THINKING!

So it is no longer Govt's responsibility to provide basic infrastructure like Electricity, right?

Sorry o, "Oyibo-pepper", l guess its is one private Company that just decided they would spend 16Billion GBP to build a Nuclear Power plnt in the U.K, last week? or am l missing something?

Some of you dont have a clue about what you argue about. wink wink

There is space for Govt investment in particular, certain areas while the Private investors also have their own areas of investment.
It is dolts like you that would expect "private investment" or privatisation of the Nigerian Armed Forces after-all, "Govt is not supposed to provide everything", right?

***shakes head in amusement******

Presently, I pay an average of N1k a month to NEPA and burn fuel of an average of N5k every month. If the power supply is constant and I am askd to pay N5k why would I complain?

That some individuals bought the distribution companies in various zones does not mean other investors cannot invest in the power sector. That is the main feature of privatization. Granted that so many Nigerians are not innovative, it is practically possible for individuals to build their own power plants, provided they have the capital to do so. This is the point of departure between Monopoly and market driven economy (Privatization).

No matter how high it goes, it will still be cheaper than buying fuel and diesel for generators..

The highlighted portion of your post is the only part I agree with..

I feel it's too early to review the tariff when they are yet to improve on their product and services..

Privatization and free market economy is not the same thing. In the current Nigerian structure, you can either build an off grid or on grid power plant. To build an on grid power plant TODAY, if you don't have an agreement with a distribution company, you will not get the license you need to build a power plant.

The Nigerian power market has been privatized but it is not a free market economy.

I did not say that Privatization and free market economy are the same. I did say that Privatization gives room for private ownership of shares and equities of companies hitherto owned by the government. I therefore used free market economy because once a company is privatized, the primary goal of the private investors is profit maximization through the interaction of demand and supply. Therefore, privatization opens windows for Free market economy (price mechanism) due to profit maximization goal.

Even where they are seriously involved, it is the government that still owns the "generation aspect" of it (Nuclear Power Plants, Hydro Dams, Coal-fired Stations, e.t.c) .....

.. while the "private investors" are limited to "Distribution and Retailing aspects" of it as they buy the electricity in bulk from Government owned Plants (at competitive prices at times) for onward distribution to our homes while we pay them directly for it.

But in Nigeria, everything we do is "over-sabi or knee-jerk reaction".
We just want to privatize whole-hog without thinking about the "economic impact and security consequences"!

Any tariff increment should be gradual, spread over a long time so that consumers dont even feel the effect

.......but l am aware that the "fixed-charge" on our tariff was jerked-up just a few weeks back, without any commensurate improvement in power-supply ,....as the "operators" have become mere "profit-takers" from fixed cost since PAYG Meters does not allow them to collect money for energy (power) not supplied!

Even now, they hoard the PAYG Meters and rather advice the customer to opt for Paper Billing! angry angry

Walahi, l tire for our greed and self-centredness cum exploitation of the vulnerable within our midst.

people should stop comparing telcoms to power. consumers do not have the luxury of changing distribution company. if you live in ojodu berger Lagos you will be under Ikeja Disco if they mess up you have not choice at all
