The new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) has suffered setback as one of its major sponsors, Niger State governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, says he is pulling out because he was no longer comfortable with the group.
A source close to the governor told our correspondent yesterday that his principal opted to pull out of the group quietly to avoid raising dust. He said Governor Aliyu is backing down to save his political career and ease his bid to anoint a successor with the least opposition from the party.
“His Excellency is not comfortable with the direction the new PDP is taking especially in his state where any tiny slip would deprive him of the control of the party’s political machinery. He would be required to set up a new party structure and leave the formidable structure the PDP already has in place for others to use,” the source said.
Governor Aliyu, he said, became worried over the way in no time his predecessor Abulkadir Kure and Prof. Jerry Gana placed themselves in strategic positions to take over the PDP structure in the state.
The governor’s volte face, it was learnt, was also as a result of pressure from friends and political associates who have been asking him to return to the PDP, promising to ensure that the President supports him in the choice of a successor.
The source said since Governor Aliyu joined the group of seven governors to form the nPDP, he had received three powerful emissaries from the Presidency and the PDP, all pleading with him to disown the group and return to the Bamanga Tukur led PDP.
The source hinted that one of the delegations was led by the PDP Board of Trustees chairman, Tony Anenih; another by High Chief Raymond Dokpesi and yet another by Ben Bruce.
“They all pleaded with him to return to the PDP saying as a doctorate degree holder, he should view things differently from his other colleagues in the new PDP,” the source said.
For some time the Niger State governor has been withdrawing from the activities of the G-7 governors and was conspicuously absent at the meeting of the governors on Sunday though he was in the country.
When contacted Press Secretary to the Niger governor Danladi Ndayebo, failed to confirm or deny the story, but said whatever problem that exists within the new PDP is an internal one and that efforts are being made towards reconciling all members.
Chairman of the new PDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje did not pick his call when our correspondent tried to reach him and did not reply a text message sent to him seeking his comment on the development.
National publicity secretary of the new PDP Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, also could not be reached as his lines were not available. National publicity secretary of the PDP Chief Olisa Metuh could also not be reached for his comment as his lines were also not available.
The new PDP was formed by seven serving PDP governors who came to be referred to as the G-7. They are the Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako, Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Wamakko, Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu.
The group’s problem with the PDP came to the open when the seven governors and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar staged a walk-out at the August 31 special convention of the party in Abuja in which many members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) that resigned were re-elected into office.
Gov. Aliyu had been part of the meeting of the G-7 with President Goodluck Jonathan and other leaders of the party who had tabled a number of demands before the President as a precondition for reconciliation with the party’s leadership.
None of the demands which include the removal of the national chairman Bamanga Tukur is seen to have been made as the meetings have not been conclusive. The last one was put off due to demands by the nPDP leadership for a postponement to allow its members perform the Muslim annual Hajj.

Not surprising at all. Next to follow would be the puppet governor in Kwara - Ahmed. At the end of the day, Amaechi would find himself alone in the marketplace, dancing deludedly like a mad man when the music has long stopped playing. Even his own aides and political associates would desert him in due course.

Politics is about self-preservation and perpetuation of personal interest, not about blind, gainless, pointless attachments.

If u can't beat then, pls join them. Instead of him to join de nPDP he shud beta decamp to anoda party. Hmmm doing so will only make him lose his seat, he shud ask our unreasonable governor of Imo state...Rochas Okorocha who will soon lose his seat by winning under APGA & decamping to APC

This Aliyu May be wise afterall.. A wise soldier knows when to retreat but the fool go unyielded and are destroyed. This is the fate of people like Amaechi who will allow pride and foolhardeness obligate their reasoning.. Their is no future with this group. Jumping to APC maybe suicidal, pdm maybe too young to gather momentum and it maybe too late to float a nee political platform. The best alternative is to remain in the PDP and fight... ( singing in Bob Marley's tone: " He who fights and run away, live to fight another day"wink

Funny that no one is saying the news is a rumor or that the paper belongs to the opposition.

Anyway, what do we make of the following? Which one should we believe?

https://www.nairaland.com/1496365/buhari-tinubu-apc-govs-g-7

Former head of state, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, former Lagos State governor, Bola Asiwaju Tinubu, both APC leaders, all APC governors and the G-7 governors will storm Sokoto today to commission the N10 billion state-owned university and some government projects in the state.

A reliable source also told LEADERSHIP last night that apart from the inauguration of the projects, the visit of the personalities will be used as a meeting to strategise on how to fashion a workable formula that will enable the G-7 governors to break away from the PDP and join the APC.The source added that the arrowheads of the plan have concluded plans to use this occasion to build a structure that will allow the governors to move to the opposition party without creating unnecessary tension.

According to the source, “I can tell you that the G-7 governors have finally decided that there is the need to take their destiny in their own hands as the previous reconciliation meetings have not yielded positive results.

They have all decided to dump the PDP. Additionally, Kebbi State Governor Saidu Nasamu Dakingari and a few others are on their way to joining the G7 governors and I can assure you that the necessary arrangement has been put in place to actualise the objective.”

Your stench of hypocrisy is dreadful. So the bullet proof car scandal is higher than the Multi Billion Lekki scam simply because the dailies is not awash with it.

You should quit pointing those filthy accusing fingers of yours at others.

What's this 'your brother is more corrupt than my brother attitude' about?

Why can't the anti-corruption agencies move against those behind the alleged Lekki scam? Who is stopping them? Who takes the blame? Is it not the President?

How on earth should that be used to justify another case of alleged corruption?

Don't you realize that in trying to defend Oduah and probably the President, you're actually putting the search light on the President's inability to ruthlessly fight corruption?

The anti-corruption agencies, under the supervision of Mr Goodluck Jonathan should wake up from their deep sleep and clean the Augean stable regardless of party affiliation or tribal considerations.

Nigerians are suffering and corruption is getting stronger. Yet some of you are peddling the annoying argument that Mr A is should be left alone because Mr B is more corrupt!

The only governor fighting a political battle for survival is Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state. The others are seizing the opportunity to make noise and gain recognition.
At the end of this fight, Amaechi is going to go the way of Timipre Sylva. He would be shocked at how quick followers abandon their leaders, when the tables turn around, in Nigeria.
These men will remain in the PDP till whenever because the party made them what they are. On their own strenght, they do not command followership within their states( except Lamido).
PDP is the only party where these men can challenge the party's NEC and remain members without expulsion.
I want to believe that, the APC leader, Tinubu, is scared of admitting them into his fold due to their gross insurbodination. Were these men to be allowed in the APC, they are going to team up with governors like; Oshiomhole, Okorocha and Fashola. These APC governors are tired of Tinubu's one-man show but cannot muster enough guts to challenge him. If Amaechi and co comes in with their money and haughty disposition...woe betide APC!
These G7 governors are the enemies of our democracy. It must be their way or nothing. I hope they move to the APC, let's see how strong Jagaban is, in the face of internal opposition. He'd know the difference between running a regional party and a federal one.
