Newcastle will again be without Steven Taylor with central defence partner Fabricio Coloccini also doubtful.

Fellow defender Paul Dummett is also unavailable because of a hamstring problem.

Chelsea have no reported fresh injury problems after their League Cup win over Arsenal.

Jose Mourinho is likely to rotate his squad again after giving several fringe players their chance in that midweek match.

MATCH PREVIEW

It seems that right now for Chelsea everything's coming up Jose!

It follows a perfect October in which he resurrected the Blues' title challenge, their Champions League aspirations and guided them to the last eight of the League Cup.

It was a month which even included rediscovering timely late winning goals, upsetting matchday officials and frustrating journalists by walking out of a press conference after taking exception to their questioning.

It seems that normal service has very much been resumed.

And with the happy/special one back to his old self, a win at Newcastle will complete the feelgood factor and send Chelsea to the top of the table.

The odds and the statistics would suggest it's a probability too as the visitors are gathering some unstoppable momentum after a run of six straight victories.

The hosts by contrast will go into the game off the back of a damaging week in which they not only lost the derby with Sunderland in the final minutes but also their place in the Capital One Cup. Significantly, the latter match was only settled after extra time.

How much those two energy-sapping contests have taken out of them both physically and mentally may well be a decisive factor. Nine of the 11 who started at Sunderland on Sunday also made an appearance in the cup three days later.

But last season they were able to upset the pre-match predictions in similar circumstances, coming from behind to inflict a dramatic late defeat on Chelsea courtesy of two Moussa Sissoko goals.

That said, this win was the only one they've achieved at home to Saturday's opponents in the last six attempts and while footballing logic doesn't always apply, it would be a major surprise if they could find only their second home win of the Premier League season this weekend.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

*.Newcastle came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 in the corresponding fixture last season, with Moussa Sissoko scoring an injury-time winner.

*.That win is the Magpies' only victory in the last six visits of Chelsea to St James' Park (W1, D2, L3).

Newcastle

*.Newcastle have lost three of their last five Premier League matches (W1, D1, L3).

*.Only bottom two Crystal Palace and Sunderland have conceded more goals than Newcastle's 16 in this season's Premier League.

*.The Magpies have only won one of their four home games in this Premier League season.

Chelsea

*.Chelsea are aiming for a fourth consecutive league victory, and a seventh win in a row in all competitions.

*.The Blues have the best home record in the Premier League but are ranked 13th in the away form table, having won just one of their four away matches so far.

*.Chelsea have not conceded more than one goal in any league game this season.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admits he is still searching for the key to getting the best out of mercurial Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa.

The 26-year-old has been used as a 'false nine' in the Magpies last two Barclays Premier League games with limited success - indeed, Pardew abandoned the plan before half-time in Sunday's 2-1 derby defeat at Sunderland.

At his best, Ben Arfa is a match-winner and has proved so already this season with a stunning strike against Fulham, but he can also be ineffectual.

Pardew has consequently used him in a series of different roles in an attempt to fine his niche, and that process is ongoing.

The manager said: "The truth with Hatem is we need a consistency in his play, and that's what we are searching for in the team.

"The decision-making process of Hatem is sometimes crucial, taking players on or playing it quickly.

"It's that balance that we are trying to get in the team that's right for Hatem and right for us."

Pardew's desperation to make the most of Ben Arfa's rich talent is all the more pressing with Newcastle's season having taken a significant turn for the worse in the last week.

They headed for the Stadium of Light intent on avenging April's shock 3-0 home defeat to the Black Cats and knowing victory would cement a satisfactory start to the campaign.

But they will welcome high-flying Chelsea to St James' Park on Saturday having slipped into the bottom half of the table and since, out of the Capital One Cup following Wednesday night's extra-time defeat to Manchester City.

skipper Fabricio Coloccini is unlikely to make the clash against the Blues as he continues his recovery from injury.

The Argentina international is back in training after a groin problem but has no football under his belt, while fellow central defender Steven Taylor, who suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury in training last week, is still some way from returning.

Left-back Paul Dummett, who partnered Mike Williamson in the 2-1 defeat at Sunderland, is also out with a hamstring strain, meaning Williamson and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa are likely to pair up, as they did in midweek against City.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admits dropping his midweek cup heroes for the trip north will leave a bad taste in his mouth.

The Blues illustrated the strength of their squad when Mourinho made 10 changes for Tuesday night's 2-0 Capital One Cup victory at Arsenal.

But the majority of that team, including goalscorers Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata, know they could find themselves kicking their heels against the Magpies.
"I don't say it's a headache, I say a bad feeling," said the Stamford Bridge boss.

"It's not easy for me to leave some players at home or on the bench because I think everyone deserves to play.

"To have all those choices is a good problem and to have all the players playing well and committed to the group is fantastic.

"But for me the responsibility of saying 'you don't play' is very hard because I feel I am being unfair with the ones I'm not selecting, because they are doing all they can to play and they can't do any more.

"When they come in they give everything, when they have a chance to play they play well.
"I change the team and they play a magnificent match so it's a difficult feeling for me because I'm unfair on them."

Chelsea can go top of the table, for a few hours at least, with a victory.

But despite heading to Tyneside on the back of a six-game winning run Mourinho knows only too well how tough a task they face - he has yet to win in the league at St James' Park.

"We know we have one of our most difficult matches of the season but we will try," he added.
"Going top is not important. It's important to go in the right direction and we feel we are improving - the quality of our game is good, the results at the moment are fantastic.

"We won every match in every competition in October including Schalke away, Arsenal away, Manchester City at home. They were very difficult matches and we won every one.

"But being top or not to be top at the moment is a question of one or two points, it's not important, although it's better to be first than fifth."

Mourinho has a fully-fit squad available for Saturday's trip apart from long-term absentee Marco van Ginkel.

Newcastle United - Chelsea Preview: Mourinho targets first win at St James' Park

Jose Mourinho takes Chelsea to Newcastle United on Saturday looking for his first ever Premier League win at St James' Park.

The Portuguese managed Chelsea in three top flight fixtures at Newcastle during his first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007 but collected just two points from those visits.

However, the former Real Madrid boss is likely to feel upbeat about bucking that trend this time around, as his men head to Tyneside having won their last six games in all competitions.

Chelsea have lost just once in nine Premier League matches this season - their 1-0 reverse at Everton in September - and go into this weekend's encounter joint-second in the table after Fernando Torres' injury time winner gave them a 2-1 win over Manchester City last Sunday.

And with leaders Arsenal facing second-placed Liverpool in Saturday's late kick-off, a fourth consecutive league victory could see Mourinho's side finish the weekend top of the pile.

Torres' strike against City was his third goal in his last two games and the Spain international looks set to lead the line once again for the Londoners.

Mourinho made 10 changes for the midweek Capital One Cup win at Arsenal and has no new injury concerns, with Marco van Ginkel [knee] his only long-term absentee.
