Nigeria s not among the world's most comprehensive ranking of English ability. In addition to ranking 60 countries and territories by their English skills, the EF EPI for the first time includes an analysis of English proficiency trends over a six-year period that has seen intense investment in English language learning. The EF EPI also finds correlations between the English skills of a nation's workforce and the country's economic outlook. - See more at: http://www.nigeriansreport.com/2013/11/the-worlds-top-60-countries-in-english.html#sthash.1STzb8zK.dpuf

Since the analysis is based on investment in English language learning, we may not do well in the ranking undecided.
We have lots of issues to deal with as a nation ...

I still have some reservations with all these arab countries making the list?

Again our Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa Language as well as our Pidgin English on my mind presently... smiley

This can't be accurate. Nigeria and Ghana should be in top five.

@OP, why should Nigeria feature on a list of countries that do not have English as their Lingua Franca?

English proficiency among the countries workforce, humm.......
Using Nairaland as a case study, even with the spell check assist, we keep reading grammatical blunders here every freaking day.

Why should we invest in the English language when our indigenous languages are wheezing for air?
If this statistics means that less attention is being paid to English then I consider it a welcome development.
Hopefully it signifies that our languages are being given the prerequisite attention.

From the terrible use of English I see in comments on Nairaland, I am not surprised.

And how does your comment here negate the fact that Nigeria should not feature on a list of E2L countries at any rate?

Even our local languages are not appreciated.
We are not investing in the general appreciation of indigenous languages.
Yorùbá and Igbo are being bastardized today in Nollywood movies and in public.
Yorùbá actors and actresses even mix Yorùbá with Pidgin English in Yorùbá plays and movies.

I don't follow...
Did you seriously expect a country where English is used as an official language to show up on that list?

Orikinla:

India is on the list.

The reason for this is provided below.

"The Indian constitution, in 1950, declared Hindi in Devanagari script to be the official language of the union.[9] Unless Parliament decided otherwise, the use of English for official purposes was to cease 15 years after the constitution came into effect, i.e., on 26 January 1965.[10] The prospect of the changeover, however, led to much alarm in the non Hindi-speaking areas of India, especially Dravidian-speaking states whose languages were not related to Hindi at all. As a result, Parliament enacted the Official Languages Act, 1963,[11][12][13][14][15][16] which provided for the continued use of English for official purposes along with Hindi, even after 1965."

I can tell you without fear of contradiction that India does not rank highly when it comes to proficiency in the English language.

GLOBAL: English proficiency ranking of 44 countries

The Nordic countries, Finland and The Netherlands top the ranking with the highest proficiency followed by Austria, Belgium, Germany and Malaysia. Malaysia is the only country in Asia to be ranked as having 'very high' English language proficiency. But the list excludes Singapore, where English is an official language.

China and India, major sources of international students, are classified as having 'low proficiency', coming 30th and 31st respectively in the 44-country table. Other countries with low proficiency include Italy and Spain.

More surprising was that general English language proficiency in India and China was similar despite the role of English in India, including as the main language of instruction in many universities there.

"The EPI does not look at those who already speak English," said Yerrie Kim, special project manager at Education First. In particular the online tests do not include speaking skills, which may account for poorer scores in India and Hong Kong where English is widely used in everyday situations, and higher than expected scores in China and South Korea where it is not.

Criticism of EF English Proficiency Index
The EF English Proficiency Index has been criticized for its lack of representative sampling in each country.[4] The report states that participants in the tests are self-selected and must have access to the internet. This pushes the index towards the realm of an online survey rather than a statistically valid evaluation.

I want to ask why so many students from nigeria have fear to make english test for foreign Universities like Toefl or Ielts.

I work in austria, and I have students from many countries and i get this english test that they know the english language without asking them.

I can speak from my country about learning a second language it start here at the first primary school and goes on with the secondary schools.

My daughter went to a secondary school and finished this school 2002 and in her last 3 years the teaching language was english in chemisty and some other subjekts. That was one of the first schools here in Austria where they teach in both languages and now it is normal that in the secondary schools they teach in german and in english.

Our system is a little bit different from nigeria we have 4 years primary school, 4 years secondary modern school, 4 or 5 years Secondary school when you go 5 years than you learn also that you can start working in a company (like chemistry, or engineering for cars or electricity) or that you can go to the University.

Are you Austrian? I ask because if you are at all familiar with our educational system, you will know that, but for the shambolic state it is currently in, Nigerian students shouldn't have to take Toefl or Ielts exams in the first place.
Re: Nigeria Missing In Top 60 Countries In English Proficiency by chreldb(m): 4:35pm On Nov 05, 2013
Nigeria is not on this list because English is the official language of Nigeria. In other words, the sixty countries listed are not on the same league as Nigeria in terms of English proficiency. You would observe that non of the countries listed have English language as their official of first language. If not this list would mean that those listed countries are more proficient in English than countries like U.S.A, Canada, Australia, South Africa and even UK. tongue. Don't get yourselves worked up people! We are not on their level. Listing Nigeria in that category of nations in terms of English proficiency is actually an insult.

Innit @chreld_b.
When you have someone like Orikinla ranking Nigeria so lowly, it simply goes show the degree to which we now immolate ourselves unknowingly.

Nigeria has fallen far on a number of KPIs but surely not that far.
