To all the reasonable folks out there:

There is a difference between "constructive criticism" and "destructive criticism". I have no problem with constructive criticism that  identifies the problem of the fledgling nigerian movie industry and proffers solutions, afterall there is nothing perfect on the face of this earth, even Hollywood that is almost a hundred years old is not perfect, however when some enemies of progress cross the line and begin to advocate the total scrapping of nollywood, a young industry that is the private investment and initiative of some individuals and that has created thousands of jobs and given fulfillment to the life of some in a land where there are no jobs, i begin to see the dirty fingers of destructive critics, witches, wizards and lazy bigots  whose only mission in life is to destroy the efforts of others.

@thirdborn, sissikil and all the other witches:

What laughable creatures! You guys are simply full of noise without action. What are you waiting for to produce your own "perfect  movies"?  Cameras are everywhere, if you can't afford the cameras get in touch with me and i will lend you some. We are all eyes and ears waiting for your "perfect movies". Stupid clowns!

@Mooretes:

I don't know what your standards are in determining a failed state, but kindly try to answer the following questions.

What will you call a nation that cannot provide common electricity?
What will you call a nation that cannot provide common pipe borne water?
What will you call a nation that cannot provide hospitals?
What will you call a nation that cannot provide good schools?
What will you call a nation where the leaders go abroad for treatment and send their children to schools abroad?
What will you call a nation that cannot provide security for her citizens?
What will you call a nation that cannot provide roads?
What will you call a nation with over 70% unemployment?
What will you call a nation that cannot organize simple free and fair elections?
What will you call a nation that is the 6th largest oil producer in the world but imports fuel?
What will you call a nation where human corpses can be seen on the streets?
What will you call a nation where all the leaders at every level are government robbers?

The list can go on and on.
Now mr mooretes, if these failings in the provision of  the fundamentals basics does not make Nigeria a failed state, i wonder what else makes a failed state.

Meanwhile some clowns out there have not advocated the scrapping of a failed nation like nigeria, yet they have the effrontery to advocate the scrapping of nollywood, the private business of individuals. The internet is sure full of garbage.

What in the world is Uncle Kanto going on about? Oh Diversionary tactics, eh? You sly man you! I gotcha!  wink

Wake me up when you wanna discuss movie making and how Nollywood is making mockery of it, mmmmkay!

Until then, it's snoresville for moi!

Wait. . . did you say something about schools? Okay, Okay, I'll give you that one. Yes, we need to provide good schools seeing as majority of the Nollywood movies out there look like they were made by illiterates!

Nice Idea Kanto, really nice! Well done!. . . and some people thought you wouldn't come around to seeing things our way!  kiss kiss kiss kiss kiss

my thoughts exactly!!

well i don't blame the poster, for his petition, but my problem is, there are so many of them in that thing now that if you scrap it,
there will be too many more bandits on the streets, and that won't help anybody down town grin
just keep them there, it spares the nation the trouble of dealing with higher levels of insecurity grin

@sisikill:

The more you write, the more  you make a fool of yourself. Pity for you and your band of witches and wizards.
Little wonder nigeria is the shameful disgrace and failure she is. With empty good for nothing, loudmouths, lowlifes and enemies of progress like yourself, nigeria is sure to remain in the dustbin for a longtime to come!

I am even doing you a favour by responding to you. I am far too superior to empty lesser mortals like yourself to be caught exchanging banters with you. Consider yourself lucky.
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by Kanto: 12:21am On Oct 04, 2008
Now i know that all the white racists are right, Africans and nigerians in particular are simply monkeys, no more no less, that is why nigeria is no better than a glorified jungle packed with unprogressive jealous bigots!

I wish the monkeys goodluck!

Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by grafikdon: 8:10pm On Oct 04, 2008
Kanto, take am easy o. . . lipsrsealed lipsrsealed grin

@Sisikill, the big problem is most of the movie producers see the art of film making through the prism of manufacturing, hence the inclination to knock together a movie in one or two weeks and rush it to the market for a ''quickie'' ermm. . . I was referring to fast cash/profit. I was totally stunned when I gathered from a very reliable source that one of the ''gods''. . . emmm. . . I mean. . . marketers refused to work with Izu Ojukwu because according to him, Ojukwu ''takes too long'' and by ''too long'' he meant 3 months. shocked shocked shocked

In my humble opinion, no serious director or producer will attempt to direct/produce more than four films in one year. I could be wrong but that's just my humble opinion. That is the reason why the likes of Ogoro, Ojukwu and Ogidan do not have dish out 365 films in one year. Spending a little extra time is no guarantee one will end up with a ''hit'' but it sure gives you a better opportunity to fix glaring errors in post production.

Absolutely, Positively Correct!! QUALITY not QUANTITY!!!
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by doyin13(m): 8:53am On Oct 05, 2008
So are the metal scrappers here trying to insinuate making a film
beyond a two week period confers some sort of certified quality.

I would think not. . . .There are numerous examples in Hollwood
and especially Europe of films made within such short time frames and have
proved to be of exceptional quality.

Micheal Hanekes films come to mind.

I think the problem with Nollywood is the blockbuster mentality. A penchant for films
with the Rambo soundtrack and punchline or Celine Dion accompaniments.

A good focused script will always help detract the audience from a flawed technical production.
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by Sisikill: 1:29pm On Oct 05, 2008
Metal Scrappers? Lmao! Was going for garbage scrappers but this is good too! cheesy

The insinuation here is that if they spent more time making the movie, they will see the flaws and you know. . . correct 'em. You'D have to be top of the top, good at what you do, to shoot in a week and these ones. . . well they ain't.

Something has got to give, don't you think? Either perfect your skills so shooting in 1 week makes no difference to the quality of the end product or take all the time in the world with the end result being quality work.

You feel? wink

A good focused script will always help detract the audience from a flawed technical production.

Love this and will also add "in the right hand".

A Good focused script in the right hands will always help distract the audience from a flawed technical production. . . because  there are some people out there who can turn cheesecake to dog poo in 30 secs flat!!!!!!

Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by iukpe: 11:57am On Oct 08, 2008
We can only say the movie industry is young and experiencing "teething problems" when there is a serious effort by all involved to make good movies and eventually it doesnt turn out so good. Technology is one of the most important things today in making good movies. The equipment, the set and editing software etc, all add to the ability to produce a good movie. Even adding computer generated images.

I have been in a small movie village in Mumbai, India sometime and I had the opportunity to see a movie being made. I believed if a fly went past the camera it would be part of the script. They were repeating one part over and over, there was a market place put together just for this movie a train station with two coaches with handles that allowed them to be rocked to imitate the train behaviour on the rail, flashing lights manually operated to look like the train was moving past light posts. It looked pretty easy especially when you realise that these were not real coaches nor real rails, but just fabricated for this purpose and repainted or relocated to fit any movie.

Nigerian movie companies should begin to think of putting some life in movie production. acquire some acers of land in one of those villages we make our movies and begin to set up movie style villages. This takes some time but will go a long way in making our next generation movies better.
After a while we will no longer need to come out to open streets to make movies where we cannot stop the public from hanging around to watch.

Some things can be made just for movie purposes when you have the determination, and with this other support talents will be discovered, like stunt men, stunt drivers, special movie technicians etc.
I specifically would like to develope special effects for the movie industry. For instance in a high tech communications center, all of the flashing light panels and screens are just dummies made for that purpose. People will be willing to invest in all kinds of things the movie industry might need.

We cant talk of teething problems when movies starts from crappy storyline and no talent displayed by the characters. A movie with a good storyline may turn out very yukky if all characters say their parts as if read from the pages of a book they've seen for the first time.
The Nigerian music industry is good today cos its backed up with a lot of technology and good talent. A bit of innovation could make a lot of difference in our movie industry.

i have done enough of proffering solutions to the nollywood malaise on other threads so ill just quickly say that for these calling for a total scraping of the industry, the cure to cancer is chemo not killing the cancer patient and using a sledge hammer on a fly is slightly being heavy handed wont you agree,

moreover for those saying if you dont like nollywood then avoid it rather than criticise,i think that is the most idiotic advice ever,in a country of 140smth million people, does it make any business sense to cater for less than 100,000 when you have the potential to reach out to say tens of millions?
instead of all the so called nollywood artistes moonlighting as high class escorts to make ends meet, and fighting over dbanj and don jazzy and the males amongst them who are gigolos they should give up the dream of being directors and producers and concentrate on being good actors and actresses, please mr nnamdi, chief okonkwo and sons electronics in alaba,ij investments on okokomaiko road e.t.c pay good scriptwriters instead of giving the story to your "shop boy who only did school cert" to write!!

I cant believe I started this discussion and never really continued on it as much as my very own sisikill did. You is the best, me love you long. Truth is for the past few months, Ive been busy with my research and boy o boy, it has taken me a loooooooong time to get to where I am today. Anyways, not going to talk about my research but erm, answering Mr Kanto would really be a waste of time. If we do not have freedom of speech and to express our opinions then I dont understand whatelse is required of us as an individual or a collective group of individuals. I expressed my utter disgust at the rate in which nollywood as an industry has decided to take us at the receiving end for fools by dishing out movies acted in 3-7days, if you mush know, we did hear that a producer working on one of the presiding Bishops of a well known church muttered his regret in how it is taking him a long time to finish the movie abt this person, long time meaning '7days' as he said it normally takes 3days to finish filming a movie.

Trust me, if it is abt making a movie, im sure myself, sisikill and others who have seen how awful the films have been made would make a very good, though provoking and block buster movie. Trust me on this one, have u looked at the story lines? they mostly make no sense. Night time to them is smtimes day light, nothing stops them in shooting at nights. Have u even seen the special effects , go to youtube, check on 'gomina ojo kan', God!!!!! are we stupid? common, even a child knows better.

My comments and I must add comments of others who did read between the lines have been restricted to Nigerian movies, we never commented on hollywood, neither did we refer to failed states or countries, beside, I would never say Nigeria is a failed state. Some policies might not be working right, mind you even the industrialised countries also once passed this stage, trust me this is what i personally do, as per research and we can argue on this till thy kingdom come.

So yeah, back to topic, some movies back in the day are better than what they've produced in recent times
if you want to speak abt hollywood, check out some low budget films that take roughly the same time to make and probably the same amount
check out the one abt vampires or so that was screened sometime last year, kai!!!!
i cant even shout jare,
case closed

Thirdborn and Sisikill and a whole lot of others i didnt mention but who did contribute immensely to this discussion, i thank u for making me keep my sanity whilst doing my research. You guys are the best, love to u all. Wish u the best in all u do
xoxo
