STATISTICS of employment generation by the Federal Government in the public sector indicates that more females have continued to break gender barriers in the Nigerian Armed Forces with a total of 537 females clinching commissioned Army officers’ slot in the 4th Quarter of 2012, over and above their male counterpart, fresh data by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows.

According to a breakdown of figures, 526 male officers were commissioned into various ranks within the same period under review, indicating a softening of the prejudice against female gender in the military circle.

The figures, released by the NBS, showed a marked improvement in the number of females who have been able to scale the ladder to become commissioned officers of the male-dominated military.

Further breakdown of the table showed that 152,018 jobs were created in the formal sector in the 4th Quarter of 2012, while a total of 174,326 jobs were created in the 1st Quarter of 2013.

In the informal sector, an average of 208,920 jobs were created in the 4th Quarter of 2012, whereas 232,327 jobs were made available by government in the 1st Quarter of 2013. However, in the 4th Quarter of 2012, the public sector witnessed the creation of only 24,975 jobs, whereas in the 1st Quarter of 2013, the number dropped slightly with just about 24,368 jobs being created.

In the same vein, the table of job creation for the 1st Quarter of 2012, when aggregated by gender in the formal sector, showed that the female gender also dominated the financial intermediation sector, as well as in the hotels and restaurants subsector of the tourism industry.

A total of 18,872 jobs were secured by male employees in the financial intermediation sector within the 1st Quarter of 2013, whereas the females got 19,555 job placements within the same period under review. But 369 males got part-time jobs in the sector representing 49.03 per cent, while 445 females got more jobs within the same sector, representing 50.97 per cent.

However, the male folk dominated the top management seats in the public sector with 690 men occupying managing director/chief executive positions, while the females trailed behind with 491 in that category.

In the hotels and restaurants subsector, 1,648 males got full-time job placements in the 1st Quarter of 2013 while 1,900 females got full-time jobs in the same sector within the same period.

More females in the officer's cadre via direct service is due to the fact that females are needed for jobs in nursing, education and other areas of life where females generally excel.....

WHY ARE THERE NO FEMALES IN THE REGULAR NDA RECRUITS?
