THE crisis rocking the Ekiti State House of Assembly took a weird dimension on Wednesday as fetish substances were allegedly sprinkled on the seats of the lawmakers in the chamber of the Assembly.

Two herbalists were said to have perpetrated the act in collaboration with two workers of the assembly.

One of the 13 Action Congress (AC) legislators in the House and a member of the G-18 lawmakers who worked for the impeachment of Speaker Femi Bamisile, Honourable Bolu Akomolafe, told the Nigerian Tribune that the latest development had confirmed their fears over their safety in the state.

The Ekiti State legislature had been in crisis following the removal of Bamisile by the 18 lawmakers who passed a vote of no confidence in him and immediately replaced him with Honourable Tunji Odeyemi as the new speaker.

A series of meetings, both among the 26 lawmakers and between the lawmakers and the state governor, Mr. Segun Oni, had been held to find solution to the logjam without success.

Efforts to get the 18 lawmakers to allow the replacement of Odeyemi as the new speaker have so far failed as the lawmakers insisted that the removal of Bamisile was final.

The latest twist in the crisis, according to the spokesman for the G-18 lawmakers, Honourable Morakinyo Adebayo, was the spread of fetish substances on their seats in the House.

He said they were alerted to the latest development on Wednesday morning by officials of the assembly, adding that it was unthinkable that some people could go to the extent of using charms to get the upper hand in the crisis.

Though, he did not point the finger at any particular individual or group, he urged the police to investigate the development and bring to book those behind it.

However, a source in the assembly said the herbalists who carried out the act were allowed into the assembly by two staff members who opened the door of the chambers to them.

The presence of the herbalists soon came to the notice of other staff members, who mobilised themselves and attacked the herbalists who were said to have successfully carried out their mission before they were stopped.

In the ensuing melee, the herbalists escaped from the complex while a shouting match ensued between the two workers who collaborated with the herbalists.

When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ola, said that the whole matter still existed in the realm of allegations, adding that he was expecting a formal report on the incident.
