2013 was an incredible year with lot of innovation and comebacks. Although, the focus is not on gadgets that dropped the jaws of tech geeks rather, on gadgets which where hyped but still became a flop despite a mass budget campaign to shove them down the throat of consumers.

Blackberry’s final attempt to reclaim the smartphone market-share ended with an embarrassing flop phone with lot of failed promises. Prior to the release of Blackberry Z10 in late March, a new operating system called BlackBerry 10 was hyped beyond the skies, yet it failed to sway consumers back to the camp of Blackberry.

With lack of innovation, saw the sinking company’s market-share drop even further, more worse being falling behind Windows Phone OS.

In late September, there was a report of a potential sale of BlackBerry to Fairfax Financial Holdings; the deal hit the brick-wall while BlackBerry made a U-turn, firing its top executives.



From the creative and innovative ideas of Mark Zuckerberg came the Facebook Phone called HTC First.

It was designed with the idea of having your Facebook account always connected. For this to happen, the HTC First debuted preloaded with the over hyped Facebook Home. The Facebook Home does one thing, “to put your friends above everything else.” It seems people were generally not comfortable with having their Facebook compulsorily online.

Despite a big budget campaign to sell this phone and the idea that came along with it, the HTC First became the Last!



Microsoft has been desperate to become relevant in the mobile industry. The acquisition of Nokia revealed the height of desperation but that alone might not make much of an impact.

The company will need a tech savvy CEO to pilot Microsoft into fulfilling a compelling dream.

Microsoft Surface RT is one of Ballmer’s foot prints, but it failed to get accepted by the majority. That’s not all, here’s what Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had to say regarding Microsoft recent moves.

“Our competition is different. They’re confused. They chased after netbooks, now they’re trying to make PCs into tablets and tablets into PCs. Who knows that they’ll do next? I can’t answer that question, but I can tell you that we’re focused.” – Tim Cook



Nintendo made remarkable exploit with the Wii even when it was greatly under-powered.

The company decided to capitalize on that by releasing the Nintendo Wii U which has thus far been an utter disaster.

More problems became of Nintendo when Warner Bros ignored the Wii U and made no plans to publish Batman: Arkham Origins for the console, saying the company has redirected its effort to creating games for the larger multiplayer audiences which Microsoft and Sony boast a large percentage.

In late July, Nintendo reported a $50 million loss due to poor sales of the Wii U.



The Chromebook is one amazing laptop from Google. With a crystal clear display, unmatched sound and awesome speed, it could have been a steal but for the hefty $1300 price tag slammed on the device, it was generally seen as overpriced gadget without any usefulness offline.

Who knows, 2014 might just be the year of the Chromebook but in 2013, it surely was another flop from the headquarters of Google.
