physical and
psychological illnesses

Q: My wife suffered a
psychological disease
that caused her to fear
everything and she could
not stay alone. Another
person has the same
condition and cannot go
to the Masjid (mosque)
to pray in congregation
and he is asking about
the cure for his
condition in order not to
resort to soothsayers
and charlatans.
A: There is no disease for
which Allah (Glorified and
Exalted be He) has not also
sent down the cure; some
people know the cure
while others do not. Allah
(Glorified and Exalted be
He) has made the Qur'an
and the Sunnah a cure for
all physical and
psychological diseases and
bestowed their beneficial
healing effects on people
in countless cases.
People may experience
certain conditions that
cause them fear and panic
without knowing the clear
reason.
Indeed, Allah has placed
countless goodness, peace,
and cures in what He
revealed to His Prophet
(peace be upon him).
I advise these two
questioners and others to
use the Adhkar
(invocations and
remembrances said at
certain times on a regular
basis) that Allah has
legislated, which bring
about safety, tranquility,
peace, and protection from
Satan's tricks. For
example, they may recite
Ayat-ul-Kursy (the Qur’anic
Verse of Allah’s Chair,
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255):
Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa
(none has the right to be
worshipped but He), Al-
Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever
Living, the One Who
sustains and protects all
that exists).
( Page No: 368)
This is the greatest Ayah
(Qur'anic verse) in the
Book of Allah. It
comprises Tawhid (belief in
the Oneness of Allah) and
devotion to Allah (Exalted
be He) and shows His
Grandeur and Sublimity
and that He is the Ever-
Living, the Sustainer of
existence, the Owner of
everything, for Whom
nothing is impossible.
Glory be to Allah, the Most
Great, and all praise is His.
When a person recites this
Ayah after each Salah and
before going to sleep, it
protects them from all
evils. It was authentically
reported that the Prophet
(peace be upon him) said:
Anyone who recites Ayat-
ul-Kursy upon going to
sleep will have a guard
from Allah to protect them
(all night long) and no
devil will approach them
until the morning.
Any person who has fear
or anxiety should apply
this prescription before
sleep and after each Salah;
their heart will feel
tranquil and they will not
see anything bad, In sha’a-
Allah (if Allah wills),
provided they believe that
what the Messenger (peace
be upon him) said and
taught is unquestionably
true.
Allah (Exalted be He) has
legislated for male and
female Muslims to recite
Surah Al-Ikhlas and Al-
Mu`awwidhatayn (Surahs
Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) after
performing each obligatory
Salah (Prayer) as doing so
is one of the causes of
being healthy, safe, and
sound from all evils. In
addition, reciting Surah Al-
Ikhlas brings a reward
equivalent to reciting one-
third of the Qur'an.
It is Sunnah (action
following the teachings of
the Prophet) that a person
recites the three Surahs
mentioned above three
times after Fajr (Dawn)
Prayer, Maghrib (Sunset)
Prayer, and when going to
sleep, for there are Sahih
Hadiths to this effect.
Among the means that
brings peace, well-being,
tranquility, and safety
against anything bad is to
seek refuge with the
Perfect Words of Allah
from the evils of what He
(Exalted be He) has created
three times in the morning
and in the evening by
saying: I seek refuge with
the Perfect Words of Allah
from the evil of what He
has created. Many
Hadiths indicate that this
supplication is among the
means of protection and
well-being.
Similarly, saying: In the
Name of Allah, with Whose
Name nothing on earth or
in
( Page No: 369)
heaven can cause harm,
and He is the All-Hearing,
All-Knowing three times in
the morning and in the
evening brings safety and
well-being. The Prophet
(peace be upon him) told
us that whoever says these
supplications in the
morning nothing will harm
them until the evening and
vice versa.
These formulae of Dhikr
(Remembrance of Allah)
and supplications for
refuge and protection
mentioned in the Qur'an
and the Sunnah are means
of maintaining peace,
security, and protection
from all evils.
Thus, every believing man
and woman should recite
them regularly with
sincerity and faith, putting
their trust in Allah and
depending upon Him.
Indeed, Allah is the One
Who manages, knows, and
can do everything. There is
no god or lord except Him,
in Whose Hand is giving,
depriving, benefiting, and
harming, and He is the
Owner of everything.
They should also firmly
believe that the Messenger
(peace be upon him) is the
most truthful of all people
who does not speak of his
own desire; his words are
revelations sent to him.
Allah (Exalted be He) says:
By the star when it goes
down (or vanishes). Your
companion (Muhammad
has
neither gone astray nor
has erred. Nor does he
speak of (his own) desire.
It is only a Revelation
revealed. May Allah's Best
Peace and Blessings be
upon him.
