Dpends on where & how d car wz used. An European used car @ km 300k wil perform beta dan d Nigerian used @ 100k. Mine wz brought in @ 250 & for 3yrs now stil fires like mad, no issues, neva smoked, neva stalled; only routine servicing.

Bros you know ur stuff. Good job explaining.

lomomike: The higher the mileage of a car/engine, the higher the wear and tear history of that engine (considering friction, heat over time)

In simple terms, a higher mileage car, has experienced more engine wear and tear thus a significant reduction in torque and horsepower (performance). But that said,

An engine ability to still perform well squarely lies on the drivers driving manners, maintenance culture and materials used as replacement (quality of various fluids, fuels, replacement spare parts).

I used a carina ii 2.0Gli liftback 3 years ago and sold it with a mileage of 480,000 miles on the odoemeter yet, the engine was still very good, while some other cars hardly does 90,000 miles and the engine goes bad. It still boils down the drivers driving manners, maintenance culture and materials used as replacement (quality of various fluids, fuels, replacement spare parts).

It also depends on the type of car make and model, there is a reason why cars are rated, there is a difference on engine performance regardless, which is also the reason a Mercedes will cost more compared to a Hyundai or a Toyota. Toyota s are known for their durability and engine performance while other cars regardless of how you maintain it tends to develop faults. There are competitions out there when it comes to car productions. Its also good to read car magazines to get more knowledge.

What do you mean by driver driving manner, i agree with maintenance culture and the quality of spare replacement.
A learner is not advised to drive a new car simply because of this reason. grin

It all depends on the maintenance culture. Always replace parts with OEM, and u never have issues with your car. Also driving manner affects the car always. Unneccessary acceleration and braking.

Ever wonder why its written in most motor car owners manual not to engage in hard acceleration, braking and sharp cornering during the first 1000-1500Km of a brand new car?
Why? But it's brand new with everything intact. Please explain...

You are right my dear diesel engines tends to last longer just as in generators.

bebe2: ok, dnt know much about cars,

but i think Diesel cars can take alot of milleage and still perform well compared to petrol cars

For a girl who knows little about cars, you got it spot-on. Diesel engines will outlive the comparable gasoline equivalents, all things being equal.

Lower - revving, and less heat generated.

Owners manuals in most cars says don't accelerate hard or brake hard for the 1st 1000-1500km of the new car journey because it will ultimately result to the car consuming more fuel easily over time, and also reduce the service life span of various components of that car. Ever wondered why two people with a car (example a camry 2013) with same engine and specifications and same vehicular mass, in same climate are having variation in MPG?

Initial driving habits of that car when bought new will and subsequent driving and maintenance habits will ultimately tell in any car.

Running - in period.

How an engine is treated in the first 1500 miles will determine how healthy it'll be.

arcis: Dear All,

I would like to know if there is and correlation between a car mileage and the engine performance. My uncle toyota corolla with mileage 243,950 the engine sound great and the car move efficiently, no smoke, no engine oil shortage, no overheating etc.

I will like to know if car mileage affect engine and the car performance because have also seen a car with mileage 45,000 that smoke, etc.

kindly help me out on this. Thank you in advance.
yea my dodge cyrsler 3.3ltr with mileage 271,082 the engine still sound perfect no smoke dry silencer with steam nd d engine as never open or giv me any problem since am using it

pDude: My ford escape 2006 is at 105,000 miles and it runs smoothly. I do not drive above 70 mph or do any stunt. I just drive it and change the oil regularly and it serves me well.

Please do u have a Ford Mechanic who helps with the servicing of your car? I drive a 2004 Ford Escape and am scared of letting the conventioner Japanese Mechanic specialist handle it. Would be glad if u can recommend a good Mech. Thanks

YOU ARE SO ON POINT. In 2008, two of my colleagues financed a brand new 2008 Nissan Tiida. And as at today, one of them has changed his engine and the other can still sell his car for a brand new because he drives with caution and maintains his car regularly.

Carefulness and regular maintenance is what is needed in a car.

the engine performance of a car depends on the usage and maintainance of the car engine. I use a 2000 model Toyota sienna and the odometer reads 226,000+ yet it's performance is outstanding, you don't even notice any vibration or sound when it's engine is revving in packing gear and it's sweet to handle when in motion. So everything depends on the maintainance history of the engine because I have seen same models with far less milage with almost dead engines.

Nice explainations here and there. But i think most tokunbo vehicles in nigeria with very high mileage might have had engine replacement in the past.
I had a opel vectra b v6 1995model, over 230,000km yet the engine steams out water vapour like a new car!
How could an engine of such age still do that?? I guess it was replaced sometime in europe.

Your ride shares most components and workings with mazda tribute. Find a very good mazda expert, and ur ford escape will be well taken care of.
Re: Car Mileage And Engine Performance by AfricaFace(f): 10:36am On Dec 28, 2013
Engine performance does not always depend on the mileage. I bought a 2001 Lexus from the US 4 years ago, at the mileage of 130, 000. My friends were like.. that's bad ..why didn't i go for one that has lesser mileage. But in all honesty, no mechanic has touched that car in the last 4 years except for servicing which I do every 3 months and the shocks that I changed this year. Sometimes, mileage does not depend on the rate of car usage, the man I bought my car from says he uses it twice a year to travel for holiday with his family within US. Sometimes he makes 25 hours journey in two days. However there are cars with lesser mileage that are used everyday within the city. The later car even with lesser mileage will have more wear and tear and lesser engine performance than my car. So I believe engine performance is mostly dependent on the usage. Some people do not service their car for 6 months and even one year...
