I have traveled widely,within and out of Africa but Nothing comes close to the humiliation,discrimination and outright racism I got from the manager of stumble inn,Elmina Cape Coast on 31st december of 2013. As color obviously mattered to them, then I have to state that I am an African female,gainfully employed and a freelance writer. I felt I needed a little break from the Lagos stress and sought for a small getaway in the neighboring country, Ghana. I searched online for affordable guest houses and picked stumble inn because of the proximity to the beach,positive reviews I saw on tripadvisor and the peaceful appearance. I made an online reservation for a five days stay and got a confirmation email from Issac,who i suppose to be the manager. I went as far as calling him from Lagos with +233541462733 which is the offical number of the Inn as posted on their website and everything was cool and sorted. I arrived Ghana,continued to Cape coast and rang him again from cape coast and he confirmed once again that my reservation was intact. I got to the inn around 8:45pm(the connecting bridge was bad,taxi had to make a detour and took a longer route) and the entrance was quite dark so I rang Issac again. He said he was busy at the bar but sent some boy,not more than fifteen to come fetch me. The boy took me to the bar/reception and that was IT- isaac(or whoever the receptionist was) saw that I was NOT white and he disappeared by the back door. I was left standing all by myself just outside the bar. The Little boy who fetched me from the entrance totally ignored me and kept busy serving the clients already seated by the bar. I beckoned on the boy uncountable times,but he snubbed me totally.

I stood outside and kept ringing Issac but he kept rejecting my calls. Time was 9;30pm and having stood for close to thirty minutes,I knew I was not welcomed and the earlier I leave,the better for me. I am human and could not stop the tears. Rejected in a hotel few hours to midnight and into a new year because I am BLACK? ! No taxi in sight,the road was dark and scary but I managed to get myself together and got to ELMINA BAY RESORT,the nearest guest house. It was fully booked and way pricey more than my budget but the kind and nice folks at the reception rang a taxi for me.

Needless to recount my travails last night. The bridge house,mighty victory and other hotels were fully booked. I had to charter a taxi to go back to Accra by 10:15pm and infact typed this in the cab. I ended up stranded in the middle of nowhere at night just because I am a black lady! I was snubbed,ignored and treated by stumble inn managers like a sub-human, even worst than an animal.

Is this right,justified? Segregation and racism in an African soil?

I told you last year that there is a covert war to tarnish the image of Ghanains by nigerians through the internet. These guys eat, breadth and sleep Ghana daily on all of their sites. 70% of their adult videos have the tag "Ghana boy/man+ Ghana girl/woman" doing nasty stuff in what is supposed to be a nigerian site.... From the linkless story, the writer's main aim is to discourage foreigners from taking a vacation to Ghana. How convenient for all the hotels in the vicinity to be fully booked at the time when she was being discriminated because she unfortunately did not bleach her skin as most Nigerians do.

That's some experience! I don't think it's got much to do with racism though. I just think it's a case of someone not doing his job well. After you've sorted everything out and you're comfortable, you can make a formal complaint to the management of the place with evidence. This will also help others who'll go there later.
Something important i noted from your story is that you wanted to check into a budget guest house but was expecting top-class treatment. That was a little bit unrealistic on your part too. Just get over the experience, enjoy your stay and come back with good stories 'cause i want to see Elmina soon too.

Next time book obudu ranch simple. I'm sure there are places you can manage there in Nigeria.

The story is bogus, who can't tell a Nigerian accent from American or British. The manager knew she wasn't white before she got to the hotel, so race had nothing to do with it.
