History of Abuja

Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, with an estimated population of 5 million (est 2005). The city is bordered to the north by Kaduna State, to the east by Nassarawa State, to the south-west by Kogi State and to the west by Niger State. Prior to its creation, Nigeria was administered from LAGOS as its capital.

The land of Abuja was the southwestern part of the ancient kingdom of Zazzau (Zaria). The name "Abuja" was derived from Abu Ja, a brother to Muhammadu Makau, the last hausa ruler of Zaria. Makau had left Zaria after being defeated by the Fulani and settled in the area now known as Abuja. In 1825 his brother Abu Ja succeeded him as the 62nd King of Zaria.

The full name of Abu Ja was Abubakar (shortened to "Abu"wink and the name Ja was given to him because he was light in complexion (in Hausa "Ja" means red or fair). He became known as "Abu-Ja", "Abu the fair one" (other sources claim that the name "Ja" was derived from the last name of his father which was "Jatau"wink. Abu Ja then built a new capital for his Kingdom and called it "Abuja".

In August 1975 the then Federal Military Government under Late General Murtala Muhammed convened a panel of experts to study, advise or recommend on the desirability of retaining Lagos as the Federal Capital of Nigeria. The panel recommended several alternatives such as Okene, Kafanchan, Markurdi, Ile, Auchi and Agege were also suggested.

The panel's recommendation for the setting up of the new Federal Capital City at Abuja was accepted and the Federal Government then promulgated Decree number 6 of 1976 which created the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Abuja officially became Nigeria's capital on 12 December 1991. It is divided into six area councils namely: Abuja Municipal, Gwagwalada, Abaji, Kuje, Bwari and Kwali. The city is the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as well as its Military arm (ECOMOG). It also has the regional headquarters of OPEC.

Abuja is blessed with a mix of agricultural produce such as tubers and root crops such as yams, cassava, maize and plantains and grains like sorghum, guinea corn and rice. The FCT has proven deposits of a wide range of mineral resources including marble, tin, mica, clay, wolfromite, tantalite and talc.

Abuja's feature is Aso Rock, a 400-metre monolith left by water erosion; the Presidential Complex, National Assembly, Supreme Court and much of the town extend to the south of the rock. The city hosts Nigerian National Mosque and the National Ecumenical Centre cathedral. It is served by the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport

I think you are a confused fellow. In one stance, you are convinced there are Hausa and Fulani ethnicities in Nigeria and in another you seemed to believe there is "hausafulani" ethnicity. Please try to understand in order to be understood.

I guess northwest geoppolitical zone will constitute Arewa but I do not think entire northeast geopolitical zone will be part of Arewa. However, Islamic Republic of Arewa must look for another capital city because Abuja has already been taken.

Islamic Republic of Arewa can not have entire Niger State as you postulated in the above post.
Re: Abuja Capital Of Arewa Republic by Nobody: 2:22pm On Jan 02, 2014
Kaura you lied pretty well. For your information the original inhabitant of abuja are gwagyi, kwandara, bassa- nge, basa- ko, and so many other minor tribes in that vicinity. Abuja as a whole is an extraction of land from kogi, niger, benue, old plateau, and niger state . Though much land was estracted from niger state.
You should also note that abubakar was the emir of the present day suleja. Formerly sule-ja used to be known as abu-ja. But when the fct was named abuja, the emirate town decided to use the name suleja which derived from suleman the red who was also fair in complesion and a for emir of that dormain.
You should also understand that those various ethicity have thier various kings which existed before the coming of the hausas from zaria. The various rulers in karshi, bwarri, karu, gwagwalada, abaji, garki, kwali, kuje etc are not hausas/ fulani or kanuri, they are of gwarri, kwandara or any other minorirty tribes. Mind you most of these rulers are christain and muslems, with close ties to tradition. Even zuba chiefdom is led by the koro element
Mind you queen Amina of zaria ones tried to conquare these people in time past and lost her life.
If you should check your history very well you will also know that abuja (present day suleja) would have been sacked by the jihadist who regrouped at kotangora, if not the bravery of the koro gwarri -genge, kwandarra and some bassa element who defend the young emirate. Mind you it was in this battle that the founder of suleja emirate lost his life.

THE STORY OF ABUJA - HISTORICAL

The present Suleja was formally known as Abuja, a sparsely populated town with a population of about 500,000 people; it was completely rural with little or no infrastructure until the enactment of Decree No. 6 of 1976.

Before the 1976 Decree, a committee ('The Aguda Panel')was commissioned to go round the country in search of a suitable location for the New Federal Capital with two major points of reference; a region that is sparsely populated and that is centrally located. And the region now known as Abuja met these requirements and hence became the recommended location for the New Federal Capital.

The acceptance of the recommendation of the committee, led to the enactment of Decree No. 6, of 1976, the Federal Capital Territory Act, and this became the blueprint for the re-location of the new Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja.

The town originally known as Abuja was later renamed Suleja, while the name “Abuja” was reserved for the capital-to-be.

In order to realise the objective of developing Abuja, the new Capital City, into a masterpiece on the African continent, the Federal Government established the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) as the sole agency vested with the responsibility of planning, designing and developing the city.

Stop lying here. The world knows that the GWARI people owns Abuja land. If hausa/fulani wants to claim Abuja of the Abubakar of Emir of Zauzzau, that will be present day Suleja.

Present day Abuja was formerly Suleja.

Well, we in SW careless about what you do with Abuja after the disintegration of the country. That is your cup of tea with GWARIs and north central people. Mind you, Gwaris are more related to Nupe than Hausas. It is not even Hausa/Fulani, because Hausas are the slaves of the fulanis -according to well documented history. Hausa/Fulani is just for numerical advantage effect, they are both individually different ethnic groups with fulanis as the ogas.
