Blame FG For Tanker Explosion – Governor Fashola by ceo4eva: 6:28pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has regretted the loss of over 15 lives in Tuesday’s tanker explosion in Apapa area of the state. Fashola spoke to journalists after inspecting ongoing projects in Ikorodu on Thursday. Describing the incident as devastating, Fashola noted that the era of moving PMS by road has gone. He noted that Nigeria was one of the few oil producing countries still transporting fuel with trucks through metropolitan cities, berating the Federal Government for not living up to its responsibility of making the rail transportation system work. “Everyone must take his own share of the responsibility on this issue. First, the federal government. There isn’t a rocket science about restoring the old rail tracks. If the rail is working as they say, then we should begin to use it to transport our petroleum products rather than use the road. It will save the roads and fuel,” the governor said. He said the incident coming just few months after the revelation of mismanagement of funds in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation raises serious questions on how the federal government appropriated the funds. He said, “When one looks at the waste in NNPC. Now we were talking about $45billion that was missing. They seem to be quite satisfied to tell us that it was only $10 billion that was missing. This is a lot of money. One dollar of public money is a lot of money. But later they told us that they spent the money actually. “Now serious questions must be asked by the National Assembly, chartered accountants and Nigerians about who appropriated the money. Was it spent during the period that the CBN governor said that they didn’t account for the money or was it before? And if there was appropriation for it, then we can now begin to seriously talk that were they the right places to spend the money? Given that if we had spent $10 billion to try and use it to build rails for evacuation of fuel from Apapa and Tin Can Island, maybe those people wouldn’t have died. They are serious questions. First was that the priority? Were those the things to spend them on assuming there was appropriation? They are serious questions that we all must ask at this moment.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/blame-fg-for-tanker-explosion-fashola/ 7 Likes

i still remain adamant on my opinion that Nigerians got what they deserve. Maybe we should have such tankers drive through streets were our current leaders live and see if there would be no change. Instead the path is always throught the poor community where they (politician) believe that waste of life is nothing . Today we hear of mass burial for victims of plateau state while Patience mother is buried like mandela we are watching 3 Likes |

Yes transporting petroleum products by train is better but the train should not go through densely populated areas, the highly flammable liquid could be ignited in case of a derailment. |

The cabal behind the petrol tanker business is one of the strongest in Nigeria. Those who say petroleum products should be transported via rail should tell us how many rail lines we have built since independence. Politicians will always look for ways to whip up sentiments when they know the truth. 11 Likes |

That was quite a leap by Mr. Fash, I do understand his gripe, but even in developed countries tankers still go by road to deliver the products to the end users. There was no need to play the blame game on this one, and if we were to play that game, will he take any percentage of the blame? 8 Likes |

A rail system which GEJ was the first president to revive from the grave since 1980 is what Fashola is using to blame him for the countries dead rail systems? You know what's more pathetic than than a giant burial for patience jonathan's mother? using the death of nigerians as a political tool. respect for fashola revoked. 16 Likes |

A governor can't explain what happened to Sunburn Yacht worth 8bn naira and insists a single dollar of tax payers money is important. Cannot explain buying lekki toll and from LCC and it's attending debts. GOD save us from hypocrites. Easy to point at a speck with a log right in your face. Politicising a tragedy for popularity. FG has not lived up to expectations by any standard true! But people lost lives, some respect to the family of the departed would have been a more appreciated response 11 Likes |

He made reference to the allegedly missing 45bn dollars, an occurrence that is associated with this dispensation. So no sir he was in fact referring to GEJ Sir 5 Likes |

Techmogul:GEJ is part of the system. He shares in the blame too. That's what we are trying to tell you. This is an indictment on the FG which involves the presidency (including the aides and ministers etc) And didn't the present administration claim to have fixed the darned rails? Did they not celebrate it and list it as one of their achievements? The Federal government has failed in rail transportation right from the old administrations to the present ones 3 Likes |
Re: Blame FG For Tanker Explosion – Governor Fashola by Techmogul: 9:25pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Mynd_44: From what I know FG claimed they fixed rails for Cargo, they never said anything about the rail having the capacity to transport 10,000 litres of fuel. And if you read the news NRC has successfully ferried cargo using th rails. So the rails are actually in operations though not as efficiently as it would hold in developed countries. Then who says rail is safer? In Canada not too long a go. A train transporting some sort of fuel completely annihilated an entire city. I do hold FG some what responsible but please People lost their lives, I think it's disrespectful to the families of those people to start a political statement 2 days after the tragedy 4 Likes |

My problem with Nigerians is that a few individuals perform in a particular role and because of that become infallible in their eyes. So when the rails work. the trains will deliver to the filling stations? and whats the link between this and Sanusi's rumour? Fashola should be looking at how emergency agencies can respond better in situations like this. Abeg talk sense sometimes. we respect you more than this. 9 Likes |

FG has not lived up to expectations by any standard true! But people lost lives, some respect to the family of the departed would have been a more appreciated response Rightly said bro. We should also ask fashola if the federal government is meant to build rail tracks from the depots to all filling stations in lagos because I dont see any sense in what fashola just spewed. If he has nothing good to say then he shuld just shut up and lets mourn d dead peacefully. Who's fault is it that the inferno raged for over 10hrs? What happened to the lagos state fire service? Perhaps if they were well equiped by fashola properties worth millions of naira would have been saved. I so much hate it when leaders try to politicize every situation, thats being silly. 8 Likes |
