How to Promote Nairaland! by Seun(m): 1:51pm On May 04, 2005
In a private conversation, Diakim gave me some nice ideas:
diakim2 : First, ask members of the forum to tell their friends and colleagues about Nairaland.
diakim2 : Two, make a car sticker (or any other sticker), bearing Nairaland.com. Pple will be curious to find out...
diakim2 : Three, Put some beautiful banners in strategic places (in Lagos, for a start), advertising Nairaland.

How can we promote Nairaland?

This might sound unethical, but you can try it, use mailing list, i dont know how you will get that, but find out from 'cool apostle' of former mobile nigeria or from people who use yahoo groups, because if you can reach nigerians who are active on the net via their mail boxes, even if it comes as junk mail, there is more chance of the person paying a visit and registering. I know this will work, because i have registered to forums like this in the past whose invitation i got from yahoo groups.

Angelgirl, I've done it in the past, with mixed success.

One way to do this is to simply participate actively in discussion forums and mailing lists and use the site you're trying to promote in your signature.

Another way is to look for articles on your site that are related to the topics being discussed in the mailing list and publishing those articles in full or in part to the mailing list, together with a link to the original location. Or to answer questions asked on a list on this forum then link to the answer!

The above two methods are quite ethical, and are known to work quite well. What might be unethical is to send an email to the effect of "please check my site!" I have done this before, too. I may have damaged my reputation by succumbing to that. But the first two methods are quite ok.

A sticker bearing www.nairaland.com will make people curious, especially the techo-savvy types. They will will definetly want to find out what it is all about.
Re: How to Promote Nairaland! by dominobaby(f): 4:05pm On May 04, 2005
If we start from telling friends and colleagues we could go a long way because that is how I also got to know about mobile nigeria.
The sticker stuff is a brilliant idea, with a fluorescent catchy colour.

Decision Time!
Here are the things we can start doing today to promote the forum:
[li]Telling our friends about the site and teaching other members how to do the same.[/li][li]Introducing a link to Nairaland in our signatures when participating in forums and mailing lists.[/li][li]Pointing people on mailing lists or forums we participate in to Nairaland articles which might be help them solve their problems.[/li][li]Invite people in positions of influence to join the site: journalists, bloggers, webmasters, and leaders of small to medium to large organizations.[/li]
Well said everybody, now time to put words into action  wink!
Re: How to Promote Nairaland! by Chigszy(f): 11:49pm On May 05, 2005
letting people be free to speak their mind would be starter!!
Then letting nigerians not in nigeria feel welcomed to post topics.
I mean making them sign in as guests is not really welcoming they still feel that they are like outcasts.
promotion like offering some kind of service i do not know what yet but if we all put our heads together we could come up with something.
Re: How to Promote Nairaland! by Seun(m): 12:39am On May 06, 2005
Chigszy,

There are no longer any restrictions to registration by Nigerians outside Nigeria. I love Nigerians outside Nigeria, particularly people like you, Ra, and (recently) Ka! I do not yet support active promotion of the forum to Nigerians outside Nigeria, because you ladies and gentlemen are 10 times more active on the Internet!

Every one ideal is nice, mostly the ideal from seun, linking friends to the site Nairaland is good, like me I have linked about four people to the site.
Re: How to Promote Nairaland! by Ka: 2:30pm On May 07, 2005
Hi Seun,

Thanks for inviting me to join the Representatives forum.

I wouldn't encourage you to mail people who you don't know about the forum - that might even turn them off, in the same way you would be turned off by people who invite you to buy Viagra or view porn from someone who also happens to know about a 100% risk free deal which will make you 100 million naira richer.

Would it be possible to print flyers with the website name on with an interesting quote from one of the posts on the forum? Something like:

*** flyer start ***

"Useful WAP/MMS tips on Glo plus everything you need to know"

Find out about this and more at

www.nairaland.com

The site where Nigerians talk about Nigeria to Nigerians

*** flyer end ***

You could leave the flyers at cybercafes, schools and universities. The idea is that you're hinting that there's useful stuff to be read there, and curious souls will want to know more.

Ka, that is a briliant concept on the flyer stuff. I think that should be implemented.

More ideas.........
Re: How to Promote Nairaland! by chimanu2000(m): 7:54pm On Jun 24, 2005
cool ideas i think the one about a sticker is a sure clinker, the challenge is how to get it across to all members.
Re: How to Promote Nairaland! by Greatpeter(m): 9:16pm On Jun 27, 2005
I think the idea of flyers and stickers are okay.
Place advert on TV and radios
Encourage members to contribute meaningfully to problem solving issues which might invite more people and will make them announce it to their friends.

So far besides the adverts i think, i already suggested somewhere. if you want to promote niara land and reach across an larger than nigerian audience; Have it incoporated into the NOllywood movies. Approach one of those producers/directors or i dont know what the drill or how they run thier show.
my reason being that nollywood movies are now being watch all around and most africans know the names of our actors and actress that i dont even know existed . Almost all the houses /visits i have done so far has a movie of nollywood.that was how messenger,fb etc got off the hook and know Twitter is the deal of the day thru hollywood, Thus if that is possible am sure you would see my point.
Re: How to Promote Nairaland! by Nobody: 9:00am On May 08, 2009
Seun,
This forum is a sleeping Giant that needs to be woken up. I have passionately mentioned this before. If properly promoted, I see this forum becoming e-Nigeria, a reference point in online community, such that in physical discussions by Nigerians, we will begin to hear something like ". . .Ok, let's take the debate to NL and see people's views". Nigeria Village square is now highly visited, quoted and referenced, but the advantage NL has over it is that NL discussions are more diverse, from politics to entertainment to sports to religion to culture etc, but NVS centres basically on Politics and Economy, although it has the advantage of having older, more serious and more mature contributors, but we can also achieve that here. I have personally invited Modibbo, ex FCT minister,my FB friend, to join NL but I've not heard from him, but most likely, he would have at least peeped here and seen what's going on. I will also invite Senator Gbemi Saraki. If these people are too proud to join, they would at least know there is a site called NL, where issues affecting them, and Nigerians in general, are being discussed daily. We can personally invite other people.

Much as many Nigerians in Nigeria would have liked to be active here, one obstacle is access to internet. I know many people that are cut out for discussions and debates as are happening here, but limited by access to internet. They pay to browse in cybercafe and of course, you don't expect such a person to be active contributor, because they don't have time and money to be browsing everday.

Far before this, I had been promoting NL, directly or indirectly. Hardly will I have any discussion with my family/friends/colleagues without quoting NL. I freely quote NL, sometimes subconsciously, in my daily discussions. Sometimes, in real life, my friends/family hear me say ". . . oh, we discussed this same topic on NL few days ago". At times, when I'm watching TV with my brothers/sisters, and a news is broken, the next thing they hear from me is ". . .oh, this event will be hotly debated on NL before tomorrow".

As regards the sticker idea, pls I can't wait to 'paint' my car with NL stickers!

WEll said Jarus,
I belong to an association and hold a good postion within and where I was asked what i do in my free time and i said NL , everyone was suprised since they expected Fb or twitter or myspace, Before i knew it everyone was scrambling to get paper and pen to write down the website, a site to behold.
For NL to really go far like i said earlier we need to feature it in some form of entertainment and as soon as it gains recognition, the forum needs to conducted with maturity because all the insults and manner of approach to discussions can be a turn off. I can imagine that on Yahoo answers i will just be gone after all who would miss me, lol, Good point Jarus but before we get to senators NL has to be branded in style as we know Nijas loves good packaging.
if possible get a one of the nollywood stars (no wannabes) have fans and star interaction and before you know it would the center of attention i rem when paula abdul was on twitter, or ashton kutcher they support their own and y cant we support ours.
I opened a thread fan club of the owner of Nairaland internationally and was disappointed with some of the responses,I expected more but hey we are all nigerians aren't we but charity they say begins at home. wrong phrase though
