tuoyoojo: Just heard on the news (indepedent television) that nma has gotten an industrial court order stopping the implemention of the joint health union's demands and asked all parties involved to shelf any industrial action until d matter is resolved in a d court. So maybe d strike may not hold
MDCAN not NMA.

Why would a nurse, lab scientist, pharmacist, radiographer, cleaner and orderly want to have the same privileges as medical doctors?

One day a Man O War will want to become the COAS.

We all have the same rights, but never same privileges.

kachy:

You seem not to know the difference between radiographer and radiologist. Besides that, both do not work in laboratories. Google is your friend. Try visiting more often. And for the records, whenever anybody you know falls sick, make sure you don't visit a doctor since God would have probably finished punishing all the doctors by then.

One question for you sir?

How will all these NMA demands and Strikes affect the life of a patient positively?

Always arguing Sacrosanct this, Sacrosanct that angry

I repeat God Punish NMA

Rubbishhhh

Thanks for your corrections on Radiographer and Radiologists though grin

gmyguy: when yáll run to india and the uk etc...to worship foreign doctors and spend all your family savings and church contributions. you forget how you ridicule your home grown docs. When you should be trying to make things better, so you don't have to go bankrupt to get good healthcare. Cry foul, all you want, till you need a doctor and see where the problem really lies, not in the doctor, but the stupid system we call a government.

when they go abroad they still meet Nigerian docs.
Nigerian docs have just the same or even more expertise than foreign docs.
Nigerian hospitals are just not equipped, that's y we refer them abroad

1 the office of " deputy chairman medical advisory committee"( DCMAC).
The chairman medical advisory committee serves as a ' director' clinical services in a teaching hospital and is assisted by a deputy both of whom are medical doctors.
JOHESU- an umbrella for ALL health workers other than doctors said this office should be abolished - it is illegal.
NMA said in other MDAs directors are assisted by many assistant directors and deputies why not in teaching hospitals?

1) Appointment of 'directors' in the hospitals.
FG agreed to appoint health workers as directors in hospitals this is as a result od NIC's ruling that JOHESU members who qualified should be appointed.
NMA argued that the ' tertiary hospital act' which established these hospitals recognises 2 directorate ONLY- clinical services and that of administration and so appointing any director other than these 2 is against the act. Furthermore this action will distort chain of command in the hospital making a junior staff issueing directives to his seniors- anarchy.

Nigerian doctors are quacks yet Dora akunyili was diagnosed in Nigeria and misdiagnosed abroad.funny lot. fly your families out. the Nigerian doctors don't care anymore. we have lost your sympathy, so have you lost ours. during this strike, none of you should dare see a doctor whether public or private.go to the pharmacists and nurses.they ll sort you out. look at the rubbish Nigerians are saying about their doctors.pathetic.you can't cough where you senators, reps and governors are BUT you want to crucify one of the few groups of people who actually work everyday then you wonder why our country is in shambles.a people who worship criminals and demonise the hard working ones. I repeat anything you people see during this strike, endure it!
seriously, it's a shame.

3) Skipping of salary GL 12 ( CONMESS 2) by doctors
federal ministry of health and some of it is agencies allowed it is staffs over the years to be skipping salary GL 11, this was noticed and stopped by the ministry few years ago but JOHESU went to NIC to challenge this action, the court admitted that the skipping eventhough made in error should be sustained, FG appeal this jugedment but ordered that JOHESU members should continue to skipp level 11.
NMA - since ALL health workers are skipping a salary GL it is members should also skipp a level ( 12) , head of service of the federation wrote to the minister of health informing that doctors should be allowed to skipp pending the outcome of the appeal. FOM refused to allow doctors to skipp without any explanation.

Not only Akunyili (of blessed memory).

How many of them that travel abroad really return alive?

The Nigerian doctor is a well trained professional. When they have opportunity to practice in developed nations, they compete favorably and even head some professional bodies over there.

We should always hold our leaders accountable.

phantom: for the record after the doctor takes a history from his patient(asks questions about the patients complaints, duration, family history, drug history e.t.c) and examines the patient, the doctor pretty much has an idea what is wrong with the patient 85% of the time. labtests and radiological investigations are CONFIRMATORY. a good doctor hardly depends on these ancillary investigations. why would i need a lab investigation or an ultrasound scan to diagnose and treat acute appendicitis? i dont need lab work to treat malaria. that is why a doctor by virtue of his training is the key variable in the equation.

the doctors own the hospitals
the pharmacists own pharmaceutical companies. that is why i think a doctor SHOULD NOT HEAD NAFDAC FOR WHATEVER REASON.
standalone laboratories should be headed by lab technologists NOT labs that are part of hospitals

Hey bro, your previous posts have been making sense but I have to fault you here, the doctor needs the medical team because he cannot do it on his own, yes you can make a tentative diagnosis for some disease conditions but we know major conditions need tests and xrays so if your sister were to be ill and in need of a blood transfusion, you would abandon what you had to do and run tests on her then donor and bleed the donor also right?, or when your friend has a closed fracture you would just treat him because you dont need the help of the radiographer to ascertain the nature of the fracture because you know it all right? would like to write a long note but let me state it here the patient needs the nurse as much as he needs the doctor as well as the lab tech.
The big difference between the Nigerian medical teams and those abroad is the doctors have an attitude problem...before you begin insulting me I'm a now a medical student and I'm speaking from first hand experience as a nurse for 5 years...

barcanista: How can Dokitas be superior when they do not own the Health Care Sector? ASUU like you pointed out is made of Academics from DIFFERENT fields in the Academia. I don't see any correlation here.
The Health Sector is made of different professionals with each having their distinctive roles. It is fair for Dokitas to give sanity a chance.
Your analogy is invalid within the context you have presented it.

The lecturers are to the universities what doctors are to the hospitals (and it is the ''hospital'' not ''health sector''). The guy you quoted rightly suggested that a librabrian (who is unarguably very important to the university system nonetheless) would not start bragging he should become the VC of the school, since he is a graduate too (but not a lecturer in the school).

The different fields of academia amongst ASUU reflects the various Specialties within Medicine (and not various professions within the hospitals), meaning that a professor of English for instance is no less an academic than a professor of Mathematics. Much like a Gynaecologist is no less a consultant doctor than, say, a Paediatrician.

It does not mean that a radiographer is at same level as a radiologist or that the chief midwife is same as an obstetrician. It does not mean a librarian is same as a physics lecturer.

They do not have same privileges as a result.

4) appointment of " consultant"

NMA - has no problem with any professional working hard to improve his/her skills to enable him/her reach the pinnacle of his career BUT the ward CONSULTANT as been used in nigerian hospitals denote a medical doctor who after obtaining his MBBS degree from any university undergone an extensive postgraduate training to SPECIALISE in one of many medical fields- a minimum of 5 year postgraduate training depending on your specialty. This broad skills and knowledg give the CONSULTANT ownership of the patient- he makes final decision on patient management.
IMPLICATION if you appoint ' consultant nurse' , ' consultant pharmacist', consultant physiotherapist' and so on there will be chaos in the systems- everybody will claim ownership of the patient, conflicting lines of treatments- nomore coordinated patient care.

my brother i agree 100% with you but you ve missed my point. i am not taking anything away from the other health workers but my point is (in reply to the person who said doctors depend fully on labs and radiology) that CLINICALLY, we can diagnose our patients most times without these other investigations.
before the advent of the CT machine, doctors were able to differentiate between ischeamic and haemorrhagic stroke CLINICALLY. these days CT has made it easier.

5) RELATIVITY in salary of health professionals

Prior to 1992 there exist a relativity in the salary of health professionals in nigeria ie the salary of each professional is proportional to the other with a fixed ratio; 4:2.7:1.7, 4 for doctors, 2.7 for professionals with university degrees and 1.7 for others. This relativity was mistakenly distorted in 1992 during conversion to HATISS and doctors went to sleep- did nothing. Went the FG introduced the concept of consolidated salary it introduced consolidated medical salary structure CONMESS for doctors and consolidated health salary structure CONHESS for other health workers.
Approval for CONMESS was given on 23rd september, 2009 ( SWC/S/04/S.410/220) but that of CONHESS was delayed till 8th December, 2009 ( SWC/S/04/S.410/Vol.11/349). The CONHESS circular came with a consolidated salary ( basic salary) exactly the way it is in CONMESS- doctors and other health professionals in nigeria have same salary. This anomaly which is only found in nigeria was presented to the FG by NMA and in it is wisdom FG rectified this anomaly though partially and issued another circular ( SWC/S/04/S.176/Vol. 11/464) on 3rd january, 2014 to that effect.
FG is yet to implement the content of the said circular 6 months after it was released and there are rumours that FG secretely adjusted CONHESS circular waiting for His excellency's approval.
Remember that 10 highest paid professionals in the USA?

The medical profession is not a cult group. It is as simple as JAMB+6Years in the university (not 6 sessions)+1yr housemanship. That is the minimum to be called a doctor. If you so desire to head a medical institution where patients are seen, pls go through these rigours. BTW, many previous Johesu members who are so determined have become doctors and are very angry at their former colleagues who are trying to fleece the system through political maneuver. It is just sad.

When NMA are tired they will come back to their senses

I love this.... Then what is all the furore about? Everybody keeps saying the doctors are overrated, the know nothing, bla, bla. If this is true, then we all should be happy that they are going on strike. At least there are other more intelligent hospital staff to take care of our illnesses. JOHESU or Joe-Hates-you or whatever they call themselves, the doctor can can do the work of each and everyone of these joe-hates-you members. Lemme show u how.... Nurses curriculum is basically a miniature version of medicine, the only difference is that they learn how to make beds and pamper the patients, which any doctor with good home training can do....Pharmacists and all their affiliates want to raise their shoulders? The pharmacology doctors study in med school, is akin to their degree .......as for the lab scientists, Abeg tell me which of the lab tests u run a medical student in year 4 cannot run..... And for these porters and health attendants, Abeg mopping the floor is a domestic responsibility that almost everybody knows how to do (Abeg make Una go Sidon)...clerks and the rest of them? Business studies in secondary school made me a very good clerk so calm down.... Which one remain Bring em on make we see! And for y'all cussing NMA, remember the strike affects mainly Govt hospitals. And most of the doctors that own private hospitals where y'all are gonna run to for medical treatment, are somehow members of NMA. So in essence ur dissing the fingers that will finally treat you!! A responsible ''union "rejoice at industrial action as some of u guys.
Doctors went on strike in lagos and ekiti, nurses covered effectively well without much ado.
who say docs are indispensable. Not all docs senseless though.I commend those that love the job not only for money but see it as a calling .
Many actually went to med schl to escape poverty. This informed there disdained attitude to colleague in other health profession.

Modern health care is delivered multidisciplinarily. Guess what, no one is a superman .We are all very important .Guess why Canada/UK continue to top best countries to live in. You obviously are not very enlightened as bout the clamouring of both waring bodies. All what the NMA is demanding is the minimum obtainable and acceptable standards world wide. Its only in your dear country you can find all these sort of rubbish because most people find themselves in position and don't Severn know their job descriptions.
If anyone wants to become a doctor then simply go back to school and fulfill your dreams. Stop cutting corners. Be proud of whatever it is that you do for a living. Simple!

NMA is creating it own healthcare protocol possible only in poverty ridden Africa.
