Hello Larosa,pls i would like to know if u use pattern to cut all ur clothes or u use freehand for some of them.

and i also noticed dat u dint finish d gown u were teaching on.could u just finish it for the sake of finishing cos it might surprise u dat pple are actually following u.not many pple r used to patterns.

I use patterns for all my clothes I have been able to adapt them quickly so I really prefer it. I use freehand only for skirts once in a while.

About the dress tutorial I assumed no one has done the pattern that's why I stopped. OK I will continue tnx for your comment.

so sorry for all the questions but i would like to know how you use patterns for ALL your customers.i sew too but avnt been able to get round to using patterns for my customers. pls can you shed more light on this?

I keep the standard uk sizes 6 - 24 pattern blocks I then grade them to each customers measurements.

it does not make sense to start drafting pattern afresh for every customer. hope this helps.

goforwardagu has requested for a tutorial on the cowl neck chiffon dress above.

The first thing you need to do is go back to page 1 of this thread. i need you to create a front and back pattern using the instructions i gave when we were trying to make the blue dress. please post the pix once the pattern is ready and let me know if you are not clear on anything.

We will take it from there.

Hello friends,

before i work on any dress, i make sure i understand the parts that come together to make the outfit no part is unimportant. This dress is made up of 4 panels 2 back, 1 front and 1 flared lower part.

This drawing shows how the parts come together.

1. On your front pattern, cut off the hip area we don,t need it for this dress. 1 and 3 are the back patterns, 2 is the front and 4 is the skirt part. However since 1 and 3 are the same you only need to use the same pattern and cut it twice.

Your pattern should look like this:

2. Place your front pattern to a folded edge of your sewing fabric. Note: its important you use very soft flowing fabric preferably lycra or chiffon for cowl necklines.

3. Determine how wide you want the shoulder of your dress. For this i used 2 and 1/2 inches so measuring from the edge of the shoulder measure 2 1/2 and mark the point "A".

4. Mark the point where the curve of the neckline ends "B". (where the neck touches the folded fabric edge)

4. Mark the point where the waist of your pattern touches the fabric "X".

5. Place one of your fingers on point X and Gradually rotate your pattern away from the folded fabric edge. (Do not let the fabric move along with your pattern ohhh! )

Aim to leave about 4 inches between the neck point "B" and the fabric edge.

6. Draw a line from point A to the fabric edge coming close to point B you can mark where it terminates as point "C". Point C is your new center front neckline and the centre of the cowl.

7. You can cut off the part of the pattern above line A - C if you wish or just fold it in.

8. Pin your pattern to the fabric and cut out. Remember to include your seam allowance all around (between 1" to 1 1/2"
