The Agemo festival is a long-standing festival that is observed in the early month of July(which is called OSU AGEMO- the month of the Agemo in Yoruba). They are belived to usher in the second batch of yearly rains and also new yam, this can be seen in the fact that rain and late yams are seen almost immediately after the departure of the Agemo masqurades. They are dressed in a robe-like apparel with a load( the contents are guarded seriously and only high ranking priests know the content). Initially, women could watch the masqurades perform but after an incident(which i don't know), it became a taboo for a woman to see an Agemo masqurade, the punishment for this is swift but painless death. It is said that the load a masqurade carries may look heavy but it is actually light and it becomes heavy only when the masqurade is seen by a woman. The masqurades stay for about 7 days before leaving with the final meeting called IMOSAN. All the masqurades( about 16 of them) must meet here to display mystic powers before leaving.
