Presidential Debates: Senate Rejects Proposal By INEC by Biliamin(m): 10:47pm On Jul 03, 2014
It was announced this evening that Senate has rejected a proposal by INEC to make presidential debates mandatory during elections

This came as a surprise as i do not know how they want Nigerians decide who will lead them. is it going to be based on who can share more rice or spend more money, or is the process undemocratic?

Read below:

THE Senate, on Thursday, rejected the proposal
which seeks to compel the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) to make presidential
debates mandatory during elections.
The lawmakers rejected the bid during the debate on
the amendments to the Electoral Act 2010, on
Thursday.

The proposal, which was contained in the report of
the Senate Committees on the Review of the 1999
Constitution and the INEC, however, approved the
proposal seeking to fix the tenure of INEC
commissioner

The senators also rejected the bid to have all
national elections held on one day, while they also
rejected the proposal seeking to shift the burden of
proof of electoral irregularities on INEC during
election petitions.

The Senate said the burden of proof of electoral
irregularities during election should be on the
petitioner.

Other proposals rejected by the senators included
that seeking to empower INEC to conduct elections
into the office of the president, governor, Senate,
House of Representatives and state assemblies on
the same day, as well as the proposal seeking to
empower INEC to exclude nominees of a candidate
from elections where a political party fails to comply
with the provisions of the Constitution or Electoral

Who are these goons called senators? Don't we have reasonable people among them?

Here are the advantages of having a presidential debate before election :

Debates provide useful information to voters about the candidates’ issue preferences, priorities, and personalities.

Those who watch debates display a greater ability to identify important information about candidates and their
platforms than those who don’t watch debates.

Debates often prompt potential voters to seek out additional information about candidates and issues after watching televised debates.

Debates encourage candidates to take specific issues and “engage the issues considered central by the other side

Unless they attend candidate rallies, debates provide citizens with the opportunity to see candidates for nearly two hours – much more than the 30-60 seconds they get in ads of news sound bites.

Debates reveal the communication skills of presidential candidates, help get a glimpse of their personality traits, and how they perform in stressful situations. This can be helpful to help judge how a candidate would handle the tasks of the presidency.

Debates force candidates to make sure they know something about a wide range of important issues, better preparing them for office.

Debates provide opportunities for candidates to provide criteria by which their presidencies should be judged.

Someone should please educate these morons called senatiors.

The last time there was a presidential debate, Buhari participated. Everyone remembers who was absent and it was not Buhari.

In order to save Nigeria from more embarrassment this decision is ok.. imagine our incompetent politicians going on air to talk rubish while the whole world watches.. The only thing they can say there is how pdp is sponsoring Boko Haram and vice versa.. Who did not watch Obaino's defense, he knows only rice and maize yet he the Governor of Anambra now..
Our politicians should just stick to their money, poster and rice campaign.. Funny Country
