Self-Discipline
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

"But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway" (1 Corinthians 9:27).

An Olympic medalist said, "It is impossible to reach Olympic standards without strict discipline." Apostle Paul was often in journeys, attending fellowships, and always at his duty post, yet he had to pray, read, meditate and write books. He regulated his activities, avoided pitfalls and compromise. Self-discipline is a duty you owe to yourself. Those who are privileged to hold positions of leadership must first control themselves. What you tell others to do must be demonstrated by you.

Many young people delight in serving God. They are always available and willing to serve in various capacities. But it has been observed that some faint and even backslide in later years. The major reasons are that they are not watchful, prayerful, patient and disciplined. The work of God can only be done by the Spirit's help. The non-disciplined worker who is busy here and there, neglecting the Word of God and regular prayers, is in danger. Saints who finish strong are those who are disciplined in recharging their spiritual battery through excellent devotional life. Enduring labour is proven by the test of time.

Quote: "Busy here and there, neglecting the Word."

Chɑllenge: "Watch and pray while you work."

Prɑyer: "My God, help me to maintain a disciplined lifestyle."

Education For Excellence
TEXT: Acts 7:20-23

"And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds" (Acts 7:22).

Education is a great legacy that children get from governments and parents. It helps children to know themselves, go into suitable careers and excel in life. In his book, You Can Win, Shiv Khera, states, "What a broad-based education really means is that the student is prepared for life, without losing their areas of specialisation or competence." It is a priceless investment which turns children into great blessings to the family, church, community and the nation. Many new inventions have been credited to industrious youths. Moses used his education to fulfil the plan of God.

Determine to use your knowledge beyond the classroom. The "5-D" principles for excellence are: determination, diligence, dedication, discipline and direction.

Some youths do not put values on their academics. Lazy or slothful students have poor performance. In a bid to get good grades, they cheat to pass in examinations. Eventually, they cannot defend their certificates as they perform below its quality. Education without God is like a ship without compass. True education liberates from sin. May your learning lead you to God's real purpose for your life.

Quote: "Use your knowledge beyond the classroom."

Chɑllenge: "Examination cheats are certificated illiterates."

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me wisdom to use my knowledge for your glory."

Worry Is A Non-Profit Work
TEXT: Matthew 6:25-33

"Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" (Matthew 6:26).

Yesterday is gone and can never be recovered. Today is fresh with abundance of opportunities. Worrying about tomorrow is a waste of time and energy. The root of worry lies in the tendency of refusing to let go of the past and an attempt to borrow problems from the future.

Hear what John Lubbock says, "A day of worry is more exhausting than a day of work." Isn't that true? There is no technology or science that can give you extra hours from yesterday or tomorrow. Therefore, make good use of today to achieve your desire.

In our text, our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us not to get worried about our needs. Instead of worrying, think, pray, decide and act. You are the image of God and prepared to inherit the blessings of Christ's sufferings, death and resurrection. If God feeds 'the fowls of the air' which have no food store, He will provide for you. Praise Him for your past blessings, then pray in faith as you work or study. Success is sure. He knows what is good for you always.

Quote: "Make good use of today."

Chɑllenge: "You have today, forget yesterday; give tomorrow to Jesus."

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me grace to handle each day without fear."

Utilising Opportunities
TEXT: Galatians 6:9-10

"As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith" (Galatians 6:10).

Kevin Carter was a South African who won the Pulitzer Prize for his photographs showing the 1993 famine in Sudan. Amongst his photographs was a little weak and dying Sudanese girl with a vulture beside her, waiting to devour.

As Carter was celebrating his awards, he was asked, "What later became of the girl?" He said, "I didn't wait to find out after this shot as I had a plane to catch." He was told that his failure to help the little girl to the United Nations Feeding Centre contributed to her death. He became depressed on realizing his failure to use his privileged opportunity to save a soul.

Opportunity, like time, waits for nobody. If not utilised, it is lost and can hardly be regained. Beloved, help support the weak, teach the ignorant, and provide for those who lack what you have. If God gives you the privilege to see the needs of others, He wants you to help proffer solutions. Avoid selfishness. The devil is a 'spiritual vulture' watching sinners to take to hell. Help a soul to heavenly safety today.

Quote: "Opportunity, like time, waits for nobody."

Chɑllenge: "Watch out for opportunities today."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to make the best use of my opportunities."

Reality Of Persecution
TEXT: Jeremiah 38:4-6

"Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire" (Jeremiah 38:6).

Persecution is opposition and troubles meant to punish or frustrate a believer to forsake God. It began from Abel who was killed by Cain because of his acceptable offering. Joseph was hated for his godly character and dreams. Jeremiah was prepared for death but God saved him. Daniel and the three Hebrews had their share of persecutions and troubles. The apostles were beaten, imprisoned and most were killed. Persecution for righteousness is evidence that our righteous life and preaching is affecting the ungodly people around us.

Our Lord Jesus says, "Remember the word that I said unto you, the servant is not greater than his Lord. If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also" [John 15:20]. Many youths like you, are persecuted for righteousness across the world. The persecutors range from neighbours, teachers, leaders, family members, peers, old sin partners, and the government. They are mocked and sometimes denied food, clothes, education, freedom, church attendance and sometimes stoned and thrashed. If you are persecuted, rejoice, endure and pray.

Quote: "If persecuted, rejoice, endure and pray."

Chɑllenge: "Persecution is a test of your faith."

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me grace to endure and pray for those persecuted."

Contentment In Christ
TEXT: Philippians 4:11-13

"Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4:11).

Contentment is a state of being satisfied with what you are or have. A very rich man discovered that wealth did not complete his joy until He found Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. He said he felt a broken part of his life which nothing else could fill. This truth is hidden from very many fame and wealth-seeking people.

Youths are passionate to get rich by all means without considering the consequences. A recent study revealed an increasing trend of depression and suicide attempts among young people. Most of these result from being over ambitious of worldly things.

The last wish of Alexander the Great was that his hands should fling outside his coffin during the burial procession to show that, at death, no one takes any wealth away. Being a billionaire does not make you the happiest person in your community. A heathen rich man once told a pastor, "Take my wealth and give me your joy." Your contentment is in your assurance of pardon for sin, and a close relationship with God through Christ.

Quote: "Take my wealth and give me your joy."

Chɑllenge: "Godliness with contentment profits the most."

Prɑyer: "Lord, keep me contented in knowing and following Christ."

Beyond Outward Beauty
TEXT: Proverbs 31:26-31

"Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised" (Proverbs 31:30).

Everything in nature is beautiful because each adds its role to complement the whole system. Sometimes, people judge beauty by complexion, height, size, and indecent exposure of the body; bleaching, painting, and artificial hairdos, nails, eye lashes which are disgusting to God. A woman pleaded with those who bleach the skin, "Please don't do it... I did it and have so much regrets."

The crazy pursuit of external beauty reflects the godlessness in our society. In the cause of trying to 'beautify' what God has perfected, some destroy themselves. The primary purpose of dressing is to cover one's nɑkedness and not fashion.

True beauty is hidden and can only be disclosed in words, character and behaviour. It is the inward purity that provides access to God. This is the type of beauty heaven plans for all saints. It makes way for a cordial relationship with our Creator. A beautiful character is cherished by all, and happy is the youth who possesses it. He becomes a vessel unto honour. Get beautiful by genuine sanctification.

Quote: "A beautiful character is cherished."

Chɑllenge: "Let your life be beautiful in righteousness."

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me a purified heart."

Arrival Of Eloquent Apollos
TEXT: Acts 18:24-28

"And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus" (Acts 18:24).

It was Niccolo Machiavelli who stated that "The object of oratory is not truth but persuasion." But this is not true of Apollos who used God's word to persuade people. He was saved; indeed, a great orator. He was an outspoken fluent speaker. At his level of the Knowledge of God's Word, he preached anywhere he went. He knew how to passionately argue his point convincingly with scriptures. He was a motivational speaker. When Aquila and his wife, Priscilla met him, they helped to perfect his knowledge in Christ, and he did not argue.

Are you a leader, debater or public speaker in your school. As a Christian, God also expects you to use your oratory talents to preach the gospel. Preaching to sinners does not need quoting multiple scriptures. You should preach Christ crucified, who is the hope of eternal life. Do not wait until you are a perfect teacher. Nobody is. So, start with what you know now. Watch good preachers, listen to their pronunciation, grammar and used of scriptures. Above all, study God's word and be prayerful. The Holy Spirit will make you eloquent.

Quote: "The Holy Spirit will make you eloquent."

Chɑllenge: "Have you preached to any soul this week?"

Prɑyer: "Lord, make me a wise soul-winner for Jesus."

Crave The Whole Counsel
TEXT: Acts 20:25-32

"For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God" (Acts 20:27).

David Livingstone described his feelings and urge after tasting the joy of salvation this way: "When first I felt the expansive benevolence of the gospel in my heart, it became an interesting question to me: How can I spend the remainder of my days in bringing my fellow men to the enjoyment of the same happiness and peace?" He graduated from Glasgow University with medicine and theology degrees. In 1840, he volunteered for missionary work in Africa, landing first at Cape Town. He travelled into the heart of the jungle of Africa on Ox-Wagon for 700 miles where he began service for the rest of his life.

Like Paul the apostle, Livingstone gave himself to teaching the whole counsel of God. He learnt local languages in order to effectively reach out to the indigenes. Today, the fruit of his labour remains, with a great city named after him in Africa. As a Christian, think of people who are suffering in sin and satanic control. Pray to be a servant for Christ's mission. Begin today; pray, study and teach the whole counsel of God.

Quote: "Be a servant for Christ's mission."

Chɑllenge: "Give the whole Word to the whole people."

Prɑyer: "Lord, I surrender myself to soul-winning from today."

Clean Hands
TEXT: Psalm 24:1-5

"Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully" (Psalm 24:3, 4).

Cleanliness is the trademark of the godly. Filth stirs fear of pollution and diseases. No one would like to dine at the table with a dirty, unkempt person. Hygiene is encouraged and commended in personal, family and public life. Our text talks about the spiritually clean hands. The hand that does evil is unclean. The ungodly uses his hands for stealing, violent attacks, cheating, idolatry, immorality and many other evils. Actually, the hand is used figuratively (a synecdoche), to refer to what we do with our physical body, while the heart refers to the seat of our emotions and our inner private actions - our thoughts.

The Scripture admonishes, "Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God" (Romans 6:13). What do you do with your body? Are they pure and godly? Can you gain access to God's presence if you continue in your acts? Jesus is coming soon to take the saints to heaven. If you are not clean, repent now.

Quote: "The hand that does evil is unclean."

Chɑllenge: "Do not use your body for sinful things."

Prɑyer: "Lord, I present my body to You as a living sacrifice."
