Eagles Soar In FIFA Rankings by shaboti: 9:14pm On Jul 18, 2014 |
After going past the round of 16 at the just concluded FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have flown to 34th, up by 10 places in the latest Coca-Cola/ FIFA rankings released in Zurich, Switzerland yesterday. In Africa, the Eagles are now ranked third behind Algeria (24th) and Cote d’Ivoire (25th). Ghana dropped one place to finish in 38th place and fifth in Africa with Egypt holding onto the 36th spot and fourth in the region. Cameroon moved up three places to 53rd depsite losing all three matches at the World Cup. They are now the eighth highest-ranked African side behind Tunisia (42) and Guinea (51) while Burkina Faso (58) and Mali (60) round up the top ten. Four-time world champions Germany reaped the rewards of their triumph at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil in the World Rankinsg. The World Cup Final against Argentina was also a duel for the leading position in the world ranking – with Joachim Low’s team coming out on top on both counts. Germany lead the table for the first time in around 20 years, followed by Argentina and the Netherlands. The Oranje’s third-place finish at the World Cup has propelled them 12 positions up the table and back into the top ten. All of the teams that exited the World Cup in the quarter-finals have climbed up the ranking: Colombia (fourth, up four), Belgium (fifth, up six), France (tenth, up seven) and Costa Rica (16th, up 12 – the Ticos’ highest-ever ranking). If the winners have gained, the less successful teams are left counting the cost of failure in their ranking positions. Former champions Spain have fallen from the top spot to eighth place, while Portugal (11th, down seven), Italy (14th, down five) and England (20th, down ten) have all dropped out of the top ten following their first-round exits. World Cup hosts Brazil, meanwhile, have dropped four places to seventh position. The next FIFA rankings will be published on August 14, 2014. AFRICA'S TOP 10 1. Algeria 2. C'Ivoire 3. Nigeria 4.
