Why Can’t A Matron Take Instruction From Doctor? – Lawmaker by Nobody: 1:42pm On Jul 19, 2014
Mr Ajibayo Adeyeye, the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, on Friday said the ongoing nationwide strike by medical doctors in government-owned hospitals was justified.

Adeyeye, a medical practitioner, said in Lagos that unhealthy rivalry was the major challenge facing the nation’s health sector.

“It is very unfortunate that doctors are on strike. “I am never happy when hospitals are closed in the country where an average person cannot afford private healthcare.

“But, the doctors’ demands are justifiable’’, he said.

The lawmaker decried the unhealthy rivalry, which he said, had characterised the sector in recent times.

He said that nurses, laboratory technologists, physiotherapists and other categories of health workers were usurping the duties of doctors.

The House Leader said it was not good for somebody who is not a doctor to be appointed as the head of a hospital.

“I wonder why a matron, who probably because she had served for more than 30 years, could not take instructions from a doctor.

“Medicine requires rigorous training; it is a profession that we are taught almost everything in the interest of patients and the public at large.

“Quackery has become the norm in Nigeria. It is unfortunate that it is only in Nigeria that you can find somebody who is not a member of NMA giving treatment to patients.

“Almost everywhere you go, there are quacks attending to the patients’’, he said.

The lawmaker said that many doctors could not afford to train their own children to become doctors because doctors were so impoverished

“They cannot afford to put their children in schools to train as medical practitioners.

“Lawyers collect 10 per cent; architects collect 3.5 per cent as commission for performing their duties.

“So, what percentage do you want to give a doctor for saving lives? The society should treat doctors fairly”, he said.

The Joint Health Sector Union has taken the Nigeria Medical Association to court for going on strike, claiming that the NMA lacks
the constitutional right to do so.

Joined in the suit are the Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, the Registrar of Trade Unions, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The National President of NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe, said the doctors’ 24-point demand included discontinuation of recognition
of non-medical doctors as directors and consultants.

The demands also include the appointment of a Surgeon-General of the Federation (SGF), payment of clinical duty and hazard allowances among
others. (NAN)

That is a million Dollar question!!!

Doctors inaction has allowed quackery to ruin the health sector.

Nigerian Doctors should have an online registry that can be accessed realtime. Let us know who is prescribing medicines.

Just like in other parts of the world, registered Nigerian Doctors should have registration numbers that MUST be available on every prescription medicine before it is dispensed by any pharmacy/drug store/hospital.

A lot of the agitation by NMA is to protect their profession. Too many usurpers!!! Everybody in Nigeria is now a Doc without training.

Killing poor Nigerians.

Doctors in the US that all have D.Pharm are never called Doctors.

It is a matter of confusion for patients.

Patients deserve to know the background of whoever is talking to them.

In the hospital, the title Doctor is reserved for Physicians.

Our patients do not need any more confusion.

Physicians are called Docs

Nurses are Nurses

Pharmacists are pharmacists

Lab scientists are lab scientists.

Everybody should love and practice their profession!

And whoever does not want to be listening to Docs in a hospital, should get another job or go back to school.

Afterall, lots of people do it. It is okay for people to think they can do better than the Docs we have, just as long as they do it the right way. By going to med school.

Village man.. grin

Now let's take a cursory look at the word "doctor" you've been mouthing all over(as if you invented it in your grandfather's backyard). Open your dictionary and read the different meanings the word "doctor".

It is derived from latin word "docere" meaning "to teach".

In no particular order, a doctor is----->

1. In education; teacher or scholar: a teacher or somebody very knowledgeable.

2. somebody with highest university degree: a title given to somebody who has been awarded a doctorate, the highest level of degree awarded by a university

3. Roman Catholic theologian: in the earlier history of the Roman Catholic Church, an eminent and influential theologian.

4. medic, dentist, veterinarian, or osteopath: a title used before the names of health professionals such as physicians, dentists, veterinarians, and osteopath

5. somebody who can fix things: a skilled practitioner of something, especially fixing or improving something.

Have you noticed you can't protect that title 'doctor" for your benefit alone unlike the "Biomedical scientists" and "pharmacists" in UK protect theirs and make it criminal for any other person to use.

I'm sorry, you can't sue anyone who addresses himself as a "doctor" even if he is a mechanic(check no5 definition). So sweat less

jayseehe: I hate it when Doctors brag about saving lives. Mofos

My brother, everyone in the health team saves lives,
-the Scientists that detects the anomaly and provides safe blood.
-the pharmacist that provides the drugs and educates the patients on the right usage.
-the nurse that cares for the patients bed side needs.
-the physio that heals you with exercise. etc

Healthcare is multidisciplinary with the patients in the center and everyone playing key roles, health leadership is neither horizontal nor vertical.

In normal countries, nurses that care about patient care and love their jobs carry out the orders of the Doctor.

But in Nigeria, things are upside down.

Imagine us arguing about what the duties of a Doc or Nurse or pharmacist is?

What will we teach our children for goodness sake.

Regardless of how much anybody hates anybody else, the truth should be the truth. It never changes.

No. You are the village man.

There are laws to protect patients from quackery in places that care about patient care.

And if you are in a hospital and you introduce yourself as Doctor to a patient, you have to mention at the end that you are a pharmacist/lab scientist/ cleaner / phlebotomist etc.

Because patients assume that every Doctor is a physician!!!
