inteli: Nigeria has deployed 50 volunteers of the Technical Aid Corps (TAC) to the Islamic University of Uganda where they will lecture until 2016.
Addressing the volunteers at the pre-departure ceremony in Abuja, the Director General of TAC, Prof. Pius Osunyikanmi said the delegation is part of about 1,500 volunteers to be deployed to 15 countries this year.

“One major aspects of Nigeria’s foreign policy is the Technical Aid Corps with the objective of providing technical know-how and manpower assistance to African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. TAC was given birth to with the view to leveraging on the abundant human and material resources in the country using it as a platform to providing technical know-how to needy ACP countries.

“We have a total of 50 of you that will be departing for a single University in Uganda. You will be going there to render services as University lecturers. You are the second batch that will be posted in the last one month. Other batches going to Namibia, Rwanda, Burundi, and others will follow in due course. In all, we would be deploying about 1,500 within the next three months”, Osunyikanmi said.

He explained that President Goodluck Jonathan gave a charge that the recruitment process should be 100 per cent merit-driven and the Directorate’s frontiers should be expanded to cover more countries.

Osunyikanmi assured the Volunteers that Nigeria would stand by them adding, “Uganda is desirous of your services and you cannot afford to give less than what they desire of you. Discipline should be your watchword; you are carrying the Nigerian flag and you must be able to do Nigeria proud.

Ensure that you market and project Nigeria in its proper perspective. Let them know that indeed Nigeria is a country that is peaceful, progressive and developing. Let everybody who cares know that Nigeria is stable, progressive and that we are on an irreversible course in our journey to development”, he said.

The Corps is a federal department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was established in 1987 to leverage on the abundant human and material resources in the country using it as a platform to providing technical know-how to needy countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific States.
Prof. Osunyikanmi urged the volunteers to be disciplined and be good ambassadors of Nigeria.

There was once a country called Nigeria. Why borrowing what we don't need and lending out what we need?

This one of the reasons why Nigeria is referred to, as the big brother of Africa.

Selfless Nation, always ready to sacrifice for the younger ones(those smaller in size and human/material resources).

Proud of my Nation yaaaaaaaaarrrrrrreeeee!

God bless Nigeria.

A very useless foreign policy initiative. Sending manpower abroad when your people are still hungry and unemployed. The cost of sending and maintaining these people abroad can be used for a profitable venture for Nigerians. Giant of Africa my foot.

Yar Adua's foreign policy thrust was reciprocity. I presume this is what this present administration stands for. Why this waste of our human and material resources when our people are in dire need of it. Our corrupt leaders are always known to organise free bazaar for other nations that will never reciprocate this same gesture. South Africa, Angola among others have made mockery of our foolishness.

It was in the news yesterday that Sokoto state government sent the second batch of about 200 students to this Islamic University of Ugando on scholarship for Masters degree & PGD whereas the same school is on aid list in Nigeria to prop up its faculty base. All these so called northern governors scholarship to Uganda, Sudan etc is definately not for academic excellence, they have diferrent agenda. Time will tell.

I'm one of the lecturers sent to Uganda and I'm quite sure it was based on merit as I did not lobby in any way to be appointed. I wonder why we Nigerians don't appreciate what we have. On getting here in Kampala, I realise that we Nigerians need to thank God for His abundant mercies and blessings bestowed upon we Nigerians as so many things that we take for granted at home are either unavailable or costly where available. Nigerians are highly respected and adored here wherever we go and I believe we have a lot of positive things to contribute to the benefit of our African brothers here in Uganda. Not only that, there are a lot of business opportunities that are very abundant here that could be positively tapped for our mutual benefits. I really want to commend the federal government for this laudable programme bearing in mind that as we are helping others, we are also helping ourselves.
