Dan Ibro jailed for indecent play

Kano State tribunal on films has sentenced a renowned Hausa movie artist, Rabilu Musa, alias Dan Ibro, to two months imprisonment for partaking in an indecent play in an Hausa film, Aloko.







Delivering judgment on the second charge against the accused, the tribunal chairman, Senior Magistrate Muktari Ahmad, ordered that the artist should spend two months behind bars or pay a fine of N10, 000 each to the state government and the State Film Censorship Board for operating a film company, Ibro Film Production Company.

He was sentenced alongside another Hausa film artist, Lawan Kaura.

On the first count charge, he was ordered to pay a fine of N10, 000, to both the state government and the State film Censorship Board for releasing the video.

Before the sentence was announced to the convicts, the state prosecutor, Sunusi Ado Ma'aji, had applied that the court should give the accused persons summary trial since they had admitted committing the offences.

Ma'aji also applied for the banning of the said film, including its sale and viewing.

The video contains a song called Mamar, which has become a catchword now being used to tease anyone wearing clothes with lines in Kano and other neighbouring states.

Speaking with newsmen after the verdict, Director General of Kano State Film Censorship Board, Alhaji Rabo Abdul-Karim, assured that his board would not relent in its effort to rid the state of illicit films.

"We will continue to see that all those who break our laws are charged to court," he said.

The convicts have one month to appeal the sentences passed on them.

Don't hausa movies go through the censorship board for approval before release? Why should the actors be bullied when their movies were completely legal? This is not a laughing matter because it's retarding our industry. I remember Bruno Iroegbu's family suffered a near fate from friends and his village people when Bruno announced he will be producing a gay movie in Nollywood. They took it personal, threatened to ostracize his family from community meetings if he continues with the project and all that. While we should be sensitive to religious and social matters when making our movies, i think the censorship board should be armed to take care of these things before releasing the movie. This is the 2nd time in young Kannywood an actor or actress is getting a harsh punishment over a movie.
