Similar serum based treatments have been used for viral diseases in the past. Edward Jenner, the man who invented the Vaccine used a similar proceedure to protect patients from smallpox. Also,patients who had measles back in the good days were injected with the serum of people who survived measles( a viral disease BTW) to cure them
