Ebola: Educational Lessons To Learn by isoh(m): 12:08pm On Aug 14, 2014
My profound sympathy and graces are with the families currently being quarantine or have suffer loss owing to the outbreak of the dreaded tetrahedra disease - EBOLA.

There is however a few lessons we as a nation can draw from this outbreak: The following heart searching questions will aid this discuss:

1. Where are our erudite professors of virology, epidemics, pharmacologist, biotechnologist etc. on developing a cure for the disease. Or are they only 'certificate best ' and not practical or 'evidence best'. What of our 'Almighty' medical doctors have they suddenly become docile?

2. Where are all the 'best' universities this country has or are they only best in ranking by several spurious bodies with questionable criteria of ranking? I thought universities use to be the centre of research where the problems of the society are solved?

The Ebola situation has made certain profound statements on our Educational policy as a developing nation. This statements are summarized thus:

1. Our education is certificate driven and not content
2. The aim of having ivory towers have been defected in the Nigerian setting.

3. Our research institutions are just symbols lacking in its core functions.

4. our educational elites and policy makers have failed us in not insisting on academic thoroughness and depth in of ivory towers.

While I join all Nigerians to pray for a speedy solution to this outbreak, I'm making a clarion call that this country rises it to the occasion an stop living in self delusion.

The simple answer to your question is FUNDING!

It costs a lot of money to build labs....especially labs that would conduct the kind of research that would enable us get a cure for Ebola.

That is why ASUU went on strike last year....and that is why Fashola wanted to increase fees for LASU(and indeed why fees are going to go up in most universities in the next few years.)...TO get the money for facilities.

But well meaning Nigerians......prevailed on them to do the ''right thing''....and now our universities are bereft of cash!
