Sorry I am late.

The problem with Ebola is that we medics do not have the facilities to deal with Ebola. Add the fact that it takes people long to get to hospital, zero good isolation facilities, and the fact that water does not flow regularly...and you get the picture.

At least....the health workers in Nigeria....not just docs...are doing a good job containing the virus so far. And Uganda...which has a good record combating ebola (and who has a High Grade Lab for Ebola testing too...at Gulu)....has sent health workers to give advice and care.

The story of EBola in West Africa is too complicated to just blame doctors.

That is why NMA and JOHESU should work together to fight for increased health care funding.
. Tank u. NMA & Johesu shuld work 2geda, gud point. But is NMA willing to work togeda wit Johesu? No! Dey want to work on top of dem. maestroferddi: Doctors are very greedy I must agree. Imagine a pharmacist who spends just less than a year in school than a doctor being relegated to almost nothingness.

At times one begins to ask whether na juju doctors use in keeping the health sector securely in their palms.

They exercise a strangehold on other health professionals; a vice grip they wouldn't relax in the foreseeable future.

The case of nurses and midwives is better left undiscussed.

To all these docs, make una take una time o, or else Nigerians will mobilise and open up the health sector to address the egregious injustice. I am not a health worker BTW.
. Don't wori, everyday is for d thief, but one day is 4d owner of d house. & from d look of thins d owner of d house is alredy @ d gate, tanx to d latest decision of d FG

What my colleague told you about consultants is not entirely true.....I work in a private hospital where the consultants are busy all throughout the week(and one of them even comes weekends). Plus...in a teaching hospital....if you are a consultant....you are busy not only attending to patients...but lecturing students, and training residents(which means coming out on weekends sometimes!). Plus...you have to do research, and keep up your knowledge by attending conferences, and studying(One of the pediatric consultants where I trained would sometimes come back to his office in the evenings, and do a bit of studying.). And if you are a consultant in paediatrics in the North....na work be that!

Plus being on call as a consultant means coming out in the night to see patients. And,in the case of the surgical consultant...and the obs/gyn...doing operations on them....sometimes as late as 2 pm.
bushdoc leave this people alone, let them think what they want... when they need the services of a consultant, then they will know... simple

They have no regards or give a hoot about the poor patients that are dying every day due to the fact that they can't afford a good private hospital..... All they care about is their selfish ego and money money money!

Trully, gone are the days when doctors were noble and selfless. This generation of doctors are a bunch of heartless people (na cultist full the work now sef) with no iota of passion or calling.

lrguru: resident doctors are those semi doctors that their names are written in pencil and there's always an eraser nearby. And lastly, they are the ones that pays the price (sack) for their masters (doctors/NMA) mistakes. Biologically: they are on the verge of extinction. Technically: they are jobless. Politically: they are of no consequence: mathematically: they are equals to zero (undefined)

In all this while,i have heard of the 24 point demand without knowing what it was all about. It took the visit of an old family friend on saturday for me to go and dig up the NMA demands.I was to say the least shocked.Where were the older members of NMA when those demands where raised. As Lawyers we know when we are stuck with a bad case.I think NARD,NMA and others have a bad case. This time they, went too far but i pray that Government restores the residency programme, return the teaching hospitals to the pre-Ransome-Kuti and IBB era and commit more funds to the health sector.

From wot he said, the hospital will still function well if the consultants are been charged to do their work but, the problem is that the residency training produces the consultant and deleting it entirely means no future Nigerian made coNsultant....... BTW, d programme was only suspended.

Misplaced priorities. Just think about these: #255million($1.6million) to purchase only TWO bullet proof cars. Missing 50 billion DOLLARS
(eventually scaled down to 20 billion then later to
10 billion dollars), and 10 billion naira to maintain
private jets. But government would rather sack doctors instead
of releasing 13 billion naira to pay them.

I had stopped commenting here but i decided to reply because i saw reason in your post. however, the consultants in my workplace carry out their duties well but they depend on residents with the required training who understand them, advance with the times and can increase the number of patients seen and surgical cases done per day. Worldwide, the concept of a medical officer without residency training is fast going into extinction in other to improve specialization and care, not the jack of all trades quackery of my father's era due to very few doctors and pressures to perform. I must also emphasize that a locum medical officer is under no obligation to work beyond his allocated time like most residents do and do not show the same commitment. they do not have the skills and may simply not obey the orders of the consultant leading to chaos. When taking up a locum, it is a time based economic decision that does not lead to better healthcare and increased output. they however help in filling up positions during scarcity of staff with basic skills at the level of the experienced intern or short-term specialist skill if their is sudden scarcity.
we were complaining that we had long operation lists in hospitals, its going to get worse. it only makes administrative life easier for a negligent employer who will wash his hands off all responsibilities and jet off to germany for liposuction of the stolen money that has accumulated in their pot belly grin
Suspending a residency that took painful long years to establish long before even 'Goodluck' was born, that required sending our forefathers to train and import the culture of the royal colleges into Nigeria is mad and sickening. The Nigerian medical colleges have progressed because of the doggedness and perseverance of the trainers and trainees who starve, scrap and borrow to sponsor themselves to travel to where they can learn some procedures and skills due to lack of necessary equipment locally which limits exposure.
What exactly do they plan to change undecided.?the change required is in infrastructure, equipment, funding so that those procedures people run to other countries for can be performed here. is that so hard to understand? But what does your president do? The toys with tradition he did not establish, foolishly trying to kill off the engine of medical training in nigeria including med students. Right back to the stone age... only made in nigeria grin grin
brain drain is coming, even if it is too late for us to get out, i advice younger ones like junior residents and interns to explore their options because most came into medicine because they dreamt of being neuro-surgeons etc
one day, we may even applaud when cbn and the judiciary are scrapped, because they are asking for too much...idi amin-like response to issues...lol... lesson to those laughing, no one is safe... grin

No wonder the senate president has turned his public post into a life affair stuff. No wonder senatorial and representative sits have turned hereditarial in nature for after the said 2 terms the sit should be left for relatives or children. No wonder we kept having boxers and wrestlers in N.A instead of them representing the nation in several weight titles and championships. No wonder ‘serving’ the people is a must .

After all, who doesn't know that
the best treatment for a headache is to cut off the said head, even if the headache is
only pointing to a more sinister problem? Why should they ask for better equipment to
work with? Why do they need CT and MRI
machines to diagnose when we have our ancient
African technology of seeing a person miles away
in the palms of our hands? Why should they ask for grants for researches?
Shouldnt their jumbo pays be enough to fund
such studies? Why havent they found a cure for
this viral haemorrhagic fever? Why should they
fault you for begging the Americans to give us
ZMapp? What are big brothers for? Is it not to clean up their younger ones every time they pee
in their pants? Why shouldn't you blame them for the ebola
outbreak in the country? Isn't manning the
borders supposed to be part of their work? Why should they say they want to be the only
ones to be tagged a sConsultants? Is it not a mere
sobriquet every Tom, Dick, and Harry can choose
to be called by? Havent people started calling me
Professor as far back as my primary school days? Why do they oppose relativity in the health
sector? Arent men born equal? Do they think you
have forgotten that the quest for relativism
caused the biblical fall of man? Why should they
want to head the medical team because they
claim they are better intellectually equipped? Isnt that egotistical? Why should they tell you to extend universal
health coverage to all citizens? Dont they know
that the citizens are wealthy enough to fund their
medical expenses? Why are they even fighting for
the masses? Do they know how many of the
intended recipients of the policy jumped for joy when you called for the heads of their supposed
activists? Why didnt they take you by your word when you
signed the said agreement with them earlier in
the year? Why do they insist on implementation?
Dont they know ASUU went on strike for a
different reason last year, other than non-
implementation of an agreement signed in 2009? Do they think your pacts are worthless? Why should they tell you not to remind them of
their sacred Hippocratic Oath and not go on
strike? Dont they know you also took an oath
when you came into office? Shouldnt they know
you swore to protect the interest of the ordinary
citizen and that is just what you are doing? Why should they clamour for increased pay? Don't
they know that this country isnt financially
buoyant enough to meet their demands like in
the other countries? Who told them our political
office holders still manage to get the equivalent
of (or more than) what their equals in those other countries earn? The answer to the questions is obviously what
you have done. Fire the resident doctors. But dont
stop at that. Fire the consultants, the medical
officers and the house officers too. Order state
executives to sack those in their employ. You can
even fire all medical students. They could have been brainwashed by their seniors. They have
drained enough from the pockets of their parents.
The government is also wasting scarce funds
because they spend ages in medical school,
saying they dont want to be half-baked. Like we
told them we need bread! Besides their seniors are always telling them they dont know anything. Take a nip in the bud before it is too late. Lets go
back to those times when there were no doctors. Tobi Bamigbade

Tayo Onaleye ARE RESIDENT DOCTORS REALLY BEING
SPONSORED BY GOVT? Some people have questioned the rationale of
state and federal governments paying salaries to
resident doctors. They claim that other graduates
pay to get post-graduate training while doctors
are paid to do same. Please take a closer look. For a typical Nigerian graduate to get post-
graduate education, she pays for a form
obtained from the institution of interest and
pays annual school fees. SHE DOESN'T WORK FOR THAT INSTITUTION. A resident doctor is very different. SHE WORKS DAY AND NIGHT FOR THE INSTITUTION
TRAINING HER! Resident doctors contribute a large chunk to the
results generated by the training institutions. So the salary a resident doctor gets is not a
bonanza neither is it "Father Christmas" gift. It is EARNED in exchange for contributing VALUE. Government training of residents is a win-win
situation. The resident takes care of Government's patient
and simultaneously advances his career. As a matter of fact, any form of training done on
government platform must never be seen as a
favour from government to the trainee. IT IS A RESPONSIBILITY! Residency training is a form of human capital
development and is a chief responsibility of
government over and above building roads and
bridges. No sane society will neglect, abort or even
suspend the training of highly skilled
professionals like specialists-in-training doctors
(residents).
