Daily Manna

"For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it" (Jeremiah 32:3).

Gipsy Smith, in his book, 'The Bible Friend,' told a story of a Dutchman, who got converted during his service in South Africa. The next morning, he returned the watch he had stolen eight years earlier from another Dutchman. When asked why he brought the watch back, he said: "I was converted last night and I have brought it back first thing this morning. If you had been up, I would have brought it last night."

The Jews, from our text, never considered repentance to be paramount in their lives. Instead, they felt Jeremiah was a threat to their existence. God had revealed their captivity to Jeremiah who delivered the message point-blank. Zedekiah, the king of Judah, was not comfortable with this prophecy. Therefore, he got him arrested and imprisoned, so that he could not prophesy and affect the people's courage. Instead of going back to God to repent of their evil ways, they felt that Jeremiah was their problem, not their sins.

Today, that situation still plays out as there are those who accuse others of being the architect of their problems. They hardly consider the better option of having proper self-examination and repenting where necessary. Some would even accuse an innocent elderly woman in the village as being the cause of their problem, while others would hinge their misfortune on their co-tenants or relatives.

As we pass through the challenges of life, our attitude must not be one of paranoia. There is no experience in life that God is not aware of. Even if men are responsible for the challenges we face, we must seek solace in God and commit all things to Him who can save to the uttermost and revenge on our behalf. Jeremiah was focused in serving God and refused to be bogged down by trivia. Do likewise.

Repentance is it!

Room for Jesus
Anonymous. Adapted by Daniel W. Whittle in The Pearl, edited by J. M. Kieffer (Cleveland, Ohio: S. Brainard & Sons, 1871).

1. Have you any room for Jesus,
He who bore your load of sin?
As He knocks and asks admission,
Sinners, will you let Him in?

Room for Jesus, King of Glory!
Hasten now His Word obey;
Swing the heart's door widely open,
Bid Him enter while you may.

2. Room for pleasure, room for business,
But for Christ the Crucified,
Not a place that He can enter,
In the heart for which He died?

3. Have you any room for Jesus,
As in grace He calls again?
O today is time accepted,
Tomorrow you may call in vain.

4. Room and time now give to Jesus,
Soon will pass God's day of grace;
Soon thy heart left cold and silent,
And thy Saviour's pleading cease.

KEY VERSE: "And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die" (Genesis 30:1).

Polygamy breeds envy, jealousy, resentfulness, covetousness, ill will, spleen and bitter hatred. Little wonder then that God, in His infinite wisdom, ordained one man, one wife for humanity. That the two young ladies, Leah and Rachael, were sisters did not prevent them from experiencing the unpalatable consequence of polygamy.

In today's text, Rachel, green with envy, developed a suicidal tendency. However, Jacob reproved his wife for the graceless statement she made. Rachel failed to know that it is only God that can make barren women mothers of children.

From her desperation to have children, she gave Bilhah, her handmaid as wife to Jacob so that she could adopt the children. The error of envy in this decision of hers was that Leah's children should normally be closer to her than the children of Bilhar, a slave lady. Rachel further demonstrated her envy by christening the two children by her handmaid names that connoted rivalry and strife. Leah in her rivalry later persuaded her husband to marry Zilpah, her own handmaid.

This shows a clear demonstration of the evil, mischief and psychological anguish in polygamy. Jacob might be justified because in his era, there was no Bible to read nor pastor to preach on the danger of polygamy. Do believers of today have any excuse to go into polygamy? No. There is no problem in a Christian marriage that God, in His unlimited power, cannot solve. With faith in God, problems such as barrenness, sickness, poverty, misunderstanding and so on can be fixed and are therefore no excuses for disobeying His word. Believers are to ensure that they hold on to the word of God and preach against polygamy.

Thought for the day: "Polygamy breeds envy, hatred, bitterness, hypertension and death."

TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 20:1-13

KEY VERSE: "So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah: but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him" (2 Samuel 20:5).

After David overcame the rebellion of his son Absalom, who died shamefully, another uprising led by Sheba, came up. Sheba, the son of Bichri, led all Israel except Judah, to turn their backs against David.

Seeing the evil ploys of Sheba, David quickly called and instructed Amasa his nephew, who earlier pitched his tent with Absalom in his revolt, to assemble for him the men of Judah within three days and return to him. Amasa had just been appointed by David as commander-in-chief of his army to replace Joab who incurred the wrath of David for killing Absalom.

Amasa's delay in assembling the soldiers of Judah within three days, made David to send Abisai, another faithful soldier to run after Sheba and dislodge him with his supporters. On hearing this, Joab joined the troop with a seemingly innocuous intention of pursuing Sheba. Eventually, he met Amasa, and he murdered him as a result of his bitterness, envy and jealousy. Amasa's life could have been spared perhaps, had he not delayed.

There is danger in delay or procrastination. Whatever God asks believers to do should be done faithfully and with prompt obedience. There is time for everything on earth. What you are to do today should not be delayed till tomorrow. No wonder Jesus said, "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work." When running errands or rendering services for God, we should make haste to get it done as specified. Remember that people who procrastinate can never serve God satisfactorily.

Thought for the day: "Delay in rendering service to God is as damnable as outright disobedience."

TEXT: JONAH 3:1-10

KEY VERSE: "So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them" (Jonah 3:5).

God is merciful, full of compassion, loving kindness and slow to wrath. In His loving-kindness, He cannot bring judgment without sending His warning first. When the warning is heeded, He cancels the impending judgment.

In today's text, we read about Jonah's re-commissioning, the Ninevites' repentance and God's reversal of divine judgment from them. Jonah, a servant of God, who had earlier attempted to abdicate the path of duty, was re-engaged by God to go and preach repentance to the people of Nineveh. Jonah repented for disappointing the Lord and accepted the re-commissioning. At his preaching, the Ninevites had a national confession of their sins from the greatest to the least of them. Consequently, God looked upon them with deep compassion.

God granted the Ninevites the wonder of divine grace, not because they fasted but, because of their contrite hearts and sincere repentance. The people of Nineveh could not have greater grace than present-day sinners and backsliders, who have the sacrificial death of, and atonement by Christ, to which they may cling for pardon upon repentance.

Nineveh was to be overthrown owing to its wickedness. It is heart-warming that all the Ninevites, including their leaders, heeded the warning and turned to God in sincere repentance. As a result, God removed the judgment earlier pronounced on them. He will remove the judgment that is coming on you, if you confess your sins, ask for forgiveness and believe on the Lord Jesus. When this is done in brokenness, contrition and humility, God will surely grant you an underserved pardon and mercy.

Thought for the day: "Genuine repentance brings gracious pardon."

TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 13:21-29

KEY VERSE: "But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth" (2 Samuel 13:21).

King David was a courageous soldier but a weak family man. He had committed dual iniquities of adultery and murder. God pronounced severe punishments against him, having given the adversaries of the Lord an occasion to blaspheme His name. God's chastisement of David reveals His impartiality as no respecter of persons. He would not allow the wicked to go unpunished, because He could not tolerate sin.

In the text, we see the result of God's punishment on David. Amnon, his son, committed incest with his half-sister, Tamar. When David heard, he was angry, but did nothing to discipline the young man. Some Bible commentators believe that David could not act decisively because Amnon was his eldest son and the next heir to his crown. It is arguable that David's guilt with Bathsheba, rendered him more awkward in punishing Amnon. This led to Amnon's murder by Absalom.

There are many Christian homes today whose living conditions make siblings prone to committing incest. No matter our level of earning power, there must be decency in the set-up of our homes. Children must not be exposed to nɑkedness of parents or the opposite gender. Adequate demarcation should be made for our children to respect the privacy of the opposite gender.

God abhors sin in all its forms and His judgment looms over unrepentant sinners. Christian leaders should never withhold the rod of discipline from their erring members. Similarly, parents should rebuke and discipline their wayward children to prevent evil from spreading.

Thought for the day: "Never shut your eyes to evil for it will grow."

TEXT: ACTS 24:14-27

KEY VERSE: "And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men" (Acts 24:16).

According to D.L. Moody, "Christianity is not responsible for the deception that exists among professing disciples. You might just as reasonably hold the Cunard Ship Company for the suicide of a passenger who jumps overboard one of their vessels at sea. Had the person remained on the vessel, he would have been safe; and had the disciple remained true to his principles, he would never have turned out a hypocrite."

In the given text, Apostle Paul stoutly defended his faith before Felix. He explained that he was being persecuted for the worship of God and the hope of the resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust. His Christian belief, made him to have a conscience void of offense toward God and man. Though a prisoner, Paul never failed to preach the gospel. As he reasoned of righteousness, temperance and judgment to come, Felix trembled at the message but never repented. Instead, he wanted gratifications in order to loose Paul from his bonds.

Truthfulness is a virtue admired by God and man. When someone learns to be sincere in speech and deeds like Paul, he will experience unique freedom that comes from knowing the truth. Although our inward part is invisible to the mortal eye, it is nɑked before God. No wonder a lie is more painful when concealed; it boils within and gnaws the conscience. Paul could have varied his witness because of the enormous pressure he faced, but not him. He turned the platform as an occasion to preach the gospel.

To have a heart void of offence, first, you must be saved. Then, pray for a purified heart through the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus.

Thought for the day: "It is virtuous to always stand for the truth despite the risks."

TEXT: ROMANS 2:12-24

KEY VERSE: "For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written" (Romans 2:24).

God's word is not to be casually listened to or read. It must be obeyed and acted upon. He justifies the doers of His word and not the hearers.

Apostle Paul makes it clear that as many that sin without the law shall perish without the law and those who sinned in the law will be judged by the law. Those sinners who have not the law, but live according to it, are law unto themselves; for it is written in their hearts. He further said, "For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written." That is, the conduct of the Jews is such that could lead the heathen world to blaspheme and reproach both the religion and its Author. By their hypocrisy and crimes, the pagan world is led to despise God and His word since they could not show any proof of transformation in their lifestyle.

Nothing else matters in the kingdom of God as living a life that steadfastly conforms to God's principles as contained in the Scriptures. Christ Himself said, "Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21). By this, He reveals that mere profession without obedience is vain.

We must in all things – speech, attitude, conduct, dressing and lifestyle in general, maintain true biblical standards befitting of a genuine Christian in a world hopelessly bent on rebelling against God’s laws. If we do otherwise, we will be a distorted model of what a real Christian ought to be.

Thought for the day: "Only the doers of God's word will be justified."

TEXT: MATTHEW 25:14-30

KEY VERSE: "And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 25:30).

Beginning with a lord who travels "into a far country," the parable moves on to tell of how he leaves his servants with various amounts of resources to work with. No one is left without something to keep him busy while the master was away. Naturally, their lord expects good returns for this generous investment. Two of the men made judicious use of what was given them, while the third buried what was given to him. He buried himself as it were!

It is worthy to note that the parable was presented towards the end of our Lord's ministry on earth. The allegory is correctly called the parable of the talents because what the Lord describes as "goods" were really talents or gifts, abilities and resources, which God has graciously given to everyone He created, including the sinner and the rebellious.

The Lord expects the sinner and the backslider to apply the gifts of existence and their free will to respond to the gospel of salvation offered by Christ. He expects them to turn from sin, believe in Him and escape the wrath of God. Believers are also endowed with enormous resources to exploit to serve God. They have been blessed with physical energy, time, education, the living gospel, the sanctified Church, the Holy Ghost's power, modern Information Technology tools and so on. We must use these gifts to seek lost souls as we await the Lord’s return.

The diligent Christians must not be like the unprofitable servant. Rather, they should channel their skills in administration, music, writing, electricals and electronics, oration, mentorship, teaching, etc., towards bringing souls out of the pool of sin and edifying believers in the church of God. As stewards of all that the Lord has given, profit must be made in His service.

Thought for the day: "Don't be over-protective of your talents; use them for the kingdom of God."

TEXT: PSALMS 119:97-104

KEY VERSE: "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day" (Psalms 119:97).

A doctorate student embarked on a peculiar project to disprove the claims of the Bible. He set forth on this doctoral thesis with a devious intent to disclaim Christians' profession of the Bible as God's Book and its acclaimed effect on peoples' lives. In the process of carrying out his study, he became converted and the same Bible he sought to disprove transformed his life. He later became a preacher of the Bible in countless universities the world over.

The psalmist in our text prayed to God. Each verse addresses God directly, with no petition; only adoration and personal testimony. He declared his love for the law of God and stated how he meditated on the word of God all day which made him wiser than his enemies and gave him more understanding than his teachers. He did not only read and meditate on God's word, he also obeyed the precepts. This restrained him from committing sin and hating every false way. This should be the testimony of all believers in Christ.

The Holy Bible is the Book of books. It is the inspired Word. Its primary purpose is to give mankind a revelation of God. It has solution to every problem, clarity to every mystery and a message for every man. No Christian can live successfully without the Bible; likewise, no Christian worker or minister can be qualified for the ministry without a thorough knowledge of it.

To discover hidden treasures in the Bible, all hindrances to spiritual receptivity must be removed. The Christian, like the psalmist, must have undying love for the Word and read it daily, cherish, treasure and obey its truths and commands to sustain a close relationship with God and remain uncompromising until the end.

Thought for the day: "The Bible is the word of God; love it, read it and obey it."

Daily Manna

TEXT: PSALM 119:89-96

"I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad" (Psalm 119:96).

Man's imperfection has reflected several times over in all the enterprise he has undertaken over the centuries. He would to jettison his writings and inventions for subsequent updated versions he calls the final solution. Yet, the updated version is discovered to have some dotted lines to be filled. It is an endless cycle of revisions, amendments, rejections and replacements.

This is not so with the Holy Bible, authored by God. He used several instruments ranging from lawgivers, prophets, military leaders and judges, kings, priests, fishermen, apostles and even women who all wrote in different ages spanning several centuries while exploring numerous themes that nevertheless led to one objective: the plan of God to save fallen man through Jesus Christ His Son.

The psalmist insists that only a perfect God could have welded such disparate writings into a work that stands out and would not admit errors requiring revisions. He declares in verse 89 of the text that God's word which we call the Holy Bible is firmly established in heaven, the perfect abode of the perfect God. Armed with this knowledge, the psalmist declares that he has no fear of the tantrums of the wicked set to destroy him. He says he will rest in the safe promises of the Word to subdue evil people. In other words, he will overcome the limitations of man-made inventions, decrees and threats with the boundless and matchless grace and power of God's promises to protect those who believe in Him as revealed in His Word.

God has not reneged on showing mercy to the penitent sinner who comes to Him for pardon and protection. He makes this explicitly clear in John 6:37. He will not reject those who come to Him and trusts His Word which "shall not pass away" without fulfilment.

TEXT: NUMBERS 14:40-45

KEY VERSE: "Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies" (Numbers 14:42).

Three men were being chased. Suddenly, they came to a cliff top which was by the ocean. The last man, the strongest of the three, decided he should take an extra-long run-up to reach the moon. At a great speed, he leapt from the cliff. He soared through the air with outstretched arms in order to reach the moon. But he plummeted, screaming to the jagged rocks below. He had leapt an impressive eight metres; however, he did not realise that the distance to the moon was 221,463 miles.

The Scripture passage for reading shows the congregation of Israel in the wilderness weeping and complaining that they had been brought out from Egypt to die in the wilderness following the report of the ten spies. They even attempted to return to Egypt. After Moses and Aaron interceded on their behalf, they decided to go to battle and enter Canaan against the counsel of Moses.

The above can be attributed to their disconnection from God in their hearts. Many Christians are still connected to the world. When God requests a change in their attitude, business, workplace, marriage and child training, they ignore the warnings and continue in their ways.

Believers are to be spiritually prepared for whatever life brings their way. The only way to do this is to spend quality time with God. You will not hear from God except you are listening. Don't be like the strongest of the three, who disconnected from others and fell; or like majority of the children of Israel in the wilderness, who disconnected from God and did not get to the Promised Land. Stay connected.

Thought for the day: "Better to stay connected to God than get distracted by the world."

TEXT: EZEKIEL 21:18-32

"And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering" (Ezekiel 21:28).

There are many judgments in the Holy Bible that precede the final judgment God will bring upon the unrepentant world. These smaller judgments that reveal His anger against people, nations and their rulers only point to and serve as the warning to sinners and backsliders to "flee from the wrath to come."

Prophet Ezekiel here relates a graphic account of how the Ammonite nation and Judah were judged for the sins of disobedience and revolt against the commandment of God. He had warned through Prophet Jeremiah that He would give Judah and other nations into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon and that there should be no resistance to him. Unfortunately, in 589BC, during Babylon's campaign to fulfil God's prophecy, Judah and Ammon rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar.

The men and women of Judah who were in exile in Babylon were elated when they heard the news of the uprising, wrongly believing it meant the end of their captivity. They could not be right because God had decreed a 70-year captivity as punishment for their sins. He, therefore, sent Ezekiel to let the captives understand that the king of Babylon would crush the revolt. Every detail of Ezekiel's prediction came to pass.

Man cannot get away with sin and mock divine prophecy. It amounts to displaying a shallow understanding of the righteous Judge of heaven and earth to presume in these last days that all things will (always) continue as they were from the beginning of creation. God says in Isaiah 13:11: "And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity..." It is only by genuine repentance, faith in Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, and righteous living that one can escape His wrath.

TEXT: MARK 10:13-16

KEY VERSE: "But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God" (Mark 10:14).

A 19-year-old youth who committed murder and was awaiting the pronouncement of his death sentence was asked by the judge, "have you anything to say before I give my final judgment?" "Yes, your honour, I have something to say. Am I alone responsible for the crime I committed? My father put the first bottle of liquor in my hand. My parents taught me that there is nothing to religion. I never saw a Bible in my home. I never heard my parents pray together before we retired for the day. Yes, they fed me – my physical flesh, but my spirit they stabbed and starved. My parents are responsible as well as I am. Let the law take its full course. May God have mercy on my parents' souls and mine."

Wise and conscious parents, like the ones in the text, will bring their children to Jesus. Unfortunately, it was those who should know better that wanted to hinder them from getting to Jesus. When Jesus saw this, He was much displeased and instructed that children should be allowed to come to Him because children and childlike minded people are destined for His kingdom.

Parents keep wondering why children and youths of today are so wayward, especially those of ministers, pastors and Christian workers. It is common to see parents pampering and shielding children from church activities. Even when they come to church, many are distracted by academic works they could have planned better for and damned social media engagements.

Good parenting must of necessity include diligence in preparing the children by introducing them to Jesus. We must repent and redirect our efforts to properly bring our children to Christ.

Thought for the day: "Christ, not social media, should be the first and final recourse for youths."

TEXT: ACTS 11:19-30

KEY VERSE: "And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch" (Acts 11:26).

The persecution that arose about the death of Stephen scattered the believers everywhere such that they travelled as far as Phenicia, Cyprus and Antioch. At Antioch, the brethren preached and the hand of the Lord was with them so that a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. According to Matthew Henry, "What was meant to hurt the Church, was made to work for its good. The wrath of man is made to praise God."

The news of the growth of the Church reached the apostles at Jerusalem that they sent Barnabas, a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and faith. His visit to Antioch brought further growth to the church because he was dedicated to preaching the true gospel. The believers' lifestyle was also noticed by the inhabitants of the town, which they identified as an attribute of Christ. They were called Christians, that is, little Christs. The Christlikeness was also evident when the church at Antioch sent relief to brethren in Judea during the famine.

Many people today call themselves Christians but live their lives carelessly, without thoughts of whose name they bear and whose ambassadors they are. The Christian is admonished passionately to "Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children … But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not be once named among you as it becometh saints … for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience" (Ephesians 5:1-6).

We are reminded that our calling is not an ordinary one – we are "called to be saints." Therefore, our walk, behaviour and lifestyle should match the calling of God. Our walk should be saintly, like Christ's and not like the people of the world.

Thought for the day: "A true Christian bears the name and lives the life."

TEXT: ISAIAH 27:1-13

KEY VERSE: "And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem" (Isaiah 27:13).

The age in which we live is referred to in the Scriptures as the "last days." This age is very significant in the plan of God as it will usher us into another important series of events called "eschatology."

A day has been appointed when Christ will destroy the power of death and the devil. This event will take place at the battle of Armageddon where armies of the Antichrist will be slaughtered. This last attempt by Satan to wrongfully take the kingdom from Christ will fail. The vineyard, the Church (Christians) will be preserved from the night of affliction and persecution.

The present dispensation is called the Church age which is characterised by evil, the dominion of Satan, darkness, ungodliness and all manner of sins. Plus, there is and will be a denial of God, Christ, faith and Christian living. This is because, the devil and all his fallen angels, walk to and fro the whole earth. With the final judgment of sinners and the defeat of the old serpent, God will replace this polluted earth with a new earth and a new heaven that will match His glory, holiness and righteousness (Revelation 21:1-4).

The great, holy and eternal heaven will have New Jerusalem as its capital. Here, Christ and all the saints from all ages will reside forever. The New Jerusalem is a material city, not a mythical one. Its beauty is beyond comprehension. Will you be there? No sin can enter there. Every believer must remain faithful and steadfast in the Lord while the sinner must repent and be saved. The backslider must return to the Lord immediately. We must not miss the glories of the New Jerusalem. If you are truly born again, then hold fast to your faith in Christ until the end.

Thought for the day: "To miss heaven is to weep inconsolably for ever."

The remedy for a church that would budge is FIRE – the Holy Ghost fire. Have you ever watched a little boy try to get a big old turtle to move? The more he coaxes it, the slower it goes. He then gets a stick and tries to club it. What does the turtle do? It just pulls its head, feet and tail inside its shell for a spell. It just sits there. The little boy gets one corner of the old turtle and props it up with a stick. Then runs to get some matches. He lights the match and holds it under the old turtle. Immediately, things will start happening. If you think a turtle can't go fast, light up a matchstick under Brother Turtle and watch him fly.

In the text, the Holy Ghost gave Barnabas and Saul a special mandate (Acts 13:2). So, they being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed for the assignment. At Paphos, they met a sorcerer, false prophet and Jew, who attempted to withstand them and the salvation of the deputy. Then Saul, filled with the power of the Holy Ghost, cast blindness on him. The deputy believed and was astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

The promised power of the Holy Ghost is given by God the Father to the believer who is thirsty. Christ told the disciples about the promise of the Father while He was with them. The point is, as a believer, there are certain revelations you will never receive and impartations you will never get until the Spirit of God comes into your life.

As a sanctified believer who wants to be extraordinary in the hands of the Almighty, you need the Spirit's power and fire in your life. Desire, pray earnestly for it and watch it overwhelm you, like the disciples in Christ's day. With this fire, you will truly begin to enjoy your relationship with God in the fullness of the Spirit.

Thought for the day: "Fire sets ablaze; get baptised in the Holy Ghost."

TEXT: EXODUS 21:12-25

KEY VERSE: "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe" (Exodus 21:24,25).

Jesus teaches on retaliation in Matthew 5:38-39. He states, "Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." This was not a wanton repudiation of the law, but masterful review to moderate interpersonal relationships amongst brethren.

In our text, we read of the Mosaic laws and punishment pertaining to fighting, murder, sales of human beings and miscarriage caused by another. It concludes in verses 24,25, "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."

The Lord's authority confirms His message of the Scripture. God does not change, neither does His word or will. The moral laws are still binding on us. Jesus emphasised finality of the word of God: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." The Law and the prophets refer to the Old Testament. The first five books of the Bible are referred to as the Law. The judicial law is the penalty for breaking the laws of not loving God and man, which will lead the offender to make a sacrifice or be punished.

Jesus came to fulfil the law and not to destroy it. Therefore, all believers must obey these laws. Do to others as you want them to do unto you. How long do you want people to love and accept you? Do so to them. In summary, the laws talk about love for God and neighbour. React to your neighbour in a way that their dignity is not taken away. You cannot overlook the law in your dealings and journey to eternity. The laws are given to us and would be used to judge us.

Thought for the day: "God's word and judgment abideth forever."

TEXT: JOHN 14:21-31

KEY VERSE: "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you" (John 14:26).

Along many highways are well placed official signs which give us direction and warn us of danger. Most of these are the reflector type; that is, they are designed to reflect the light of auto headlamps. In the daytime, they are very easy to see and read. And in darkness, they are invisible to anyone who travels without light but when our auto headlights are flashed upon them, they reflect back to us their message of guidance or caution. Their messages are for our welfare both in the night and day. They are our permanent road instructors.

The last series of the messages of Jesus was to prepare His disciples for the time that He would no longer be around to teach them. He made them to know that the heavenly Father loved and had plans for them. Through the ministry of the Holy Ghost, who is the Comforter and Teacher, their basic needs would be met. Their responsibility was to obey instructions given and patiently demonstrate the life of faith.

Obedience is the key to God's heart. The Lord points out the principle, which any one who would be His follower must keep. Total obedience to His word is the only evidence that we love Him. God moves in the lives of those who completely surrender to Him. He will not reveal Himself to the rebellious, but only to those who obey Him.

To benefit maximally from the ministry of the Holy Spirit, you must give your life to Jesus and pray for the sanctification experience, to be pure within and without. Then, pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to fill and make you a channel of blessing to other people.

Thought for the day: "When we love the Lord, we have great joy obeying Him."

Daily Manna

"Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence" (Jeremiah 23:39).

The Bible condemns the doctrine of eternal (unconditional) security of the soul which states that once a person is saved, he remains saved and fit for heaven even if he renounces the lifestyle of holiness. This is far from the truth. In the Old Testament, we read of some who though saved from bondage in Egypt, (symbolizing the sinful world) did not make the promised land (typifying heaven) as they failed to sustain the saving grace they received. They trifled with it. The same doom came upon Judas, Demas, Ananias and Sapphira in the New Testament. They were once saved but became careless, not acknowledging that salvation was conditional.

That is what God is teaching us in today's reading. The people of Judah in the days of Prophet Jeremiah always mocked him over the kind of messages God gave him for them. They would ask: "Hey Jeremiah, what do you have for us again? More bad news? What's the latest from your Lord? Come on, tell us!" It was obvious that they were making a jest of the oracle of God. The mistake they made was that what they called bad news was really the bitter truth they needed to hear and accept in order to turn a new leaf and escape from God's anger.

About 600 years after Jeremiah's ministry, Jesus said that it is the truth which will set the sinful free. If the Israelites in the days of Jeremiah had received this truth about their spiritual deficiency, they would have spared themselves the fatal judgment that came upon them. But they despised His counsel and He rejected them. Do not behave like them so as not to suffer a similar fate as God has not changed. He still judges. There might not be a second chance to repent before the rapture. So, strive always to "make your calling and election sure" and "work out your salvation with fear and trembling."

KEY VERSE: "Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought His judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD'S anger" (Zephaniah 2:3).

Our God is merciful; yet, He is a God of judgment. He has reserved a day in which he would judge the world for her wickedness. Jesus established the certainty of this end-time judgment: "And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven…and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other" (Matthew 24:30, 31).

Verse 4 to 15 of the text explains the inevitability of God's judgment upon nations that made themselves enemies of Judah. Similarly, God's judgment upon all categories of sinners and backsliders all over the world is imminent. "The great day of the Lord is near, it is near; and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly" (Zephaniah 1:14).

The only escape route from the imminent indignation is to "Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon" (Isaiah 55:6, 7). Mercy and pardon await every penitent sinner who comes to the Lord in genuine repentance.

Thought for the day: "Seek God to avoid His wrath."

Daily Manna

TEXT: 2 KINGS 10:28-36

"But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin" (Jeremiah 23:39).

The true follower of Jesus Christ should never fail to draw appropriate lessons from the encounter Apostle Peter had with the Lord in John 13 where our Lord washed the disciples' feet. The apostle did not want to submit himself for the exercise. Jesus solemnly told him he would have no part with Him if he was not washed. Why would he, a redeemed person, have no part with Jesus just because he did not feel like washing his feet?

The answer is simple: Jesus is the all-wise Lord and we His followers must do His bidding in every detail of our lives. It is His will that matters, not ours. Total obedience is the fruit of genuine salvation. The lesson was lost however on Jehu. He pleased God when he exterminated Baal worship and its prophets in the land of Israel. God acknowledged his exploits and honoured him by offering his four generations of regal rights.

That was where it ended because "Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: For he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin" (2 Kings 10:31). Jehu failed in that major detail which mattered most. He only followed the Lord halfway.

The enduring character in a truly saved person is continual and total obedience to the commandments of God. To claim we are redeemed by the Blood of Jesus but still choose what is convenient in His word to obey or not, makes our profession not to be real. We must adhere to what the Lord demands every moment of our walk with Him because our knowledge is limited and wisdom fallible. Moreover, there is need to resist and reject such carnal inclinations and follow where the Lord leads. That is the only way we can escape hearing the words: "Thou has no part with me."

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 20:24-34

KEY VERSE: "Then Sɑul's ɑnger was kindled ɑgɑinst Jonɑthɑn, ɑnd he sɑid unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious womɑn, do not I know thɑt thou hɑst chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, ɑnd unto the confusion of thy mother's nɑkedness?" (1 Sɑmuel 20:30).

When we speak, the state of our heart is revealed, whether it is good or evil. Though the human mind may not be read accurately, words from the mouth with corresponding actions from the heart's meditations adequately reveal the yearnings and the intents of the heart.

This statement seems to find relevance in our text today. David was convinced that Saul had evil intentions against him but Jonathan was doubtful of it. The vicious remarks and reactions of Saul to David's good intentions betrayed the evil in his heart. In the opening verses, we cannot fail to notice the reverence with which Jonathan related with his father. He stood up while the king came in to have his seat at the table. David did not show up at the religious sacrifice. An intuitive feeling of danger kindled by providence made him to flee into hiding that night.

Saul was sure from his knowledge of David's constancy, that he could not have kept himself away from religious duties without an acceptable cause. This comment by Saul is a remarkable tribute to David's fidelity to holy principles and a challenge to every Christian today (1 Peter 2:12). Holy and righteous principle in life and conduct is our sure route of escape from divine wrath and judgment.

Avoid self-management. Cling to that which is righteous, holy and pious. Let it be written concerning you that you displayed the rarest of virtues, because of your abiding relationship with Christ.

Thought for the day: "Godly virtues secure."

TEXT: NUMBERS 16:36-40

KEY VERSE: "Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed" (Numbers 16:37).

In an African country, a few years back, the president, decided to sanitise the political scene. In a sweep, the new leader ordered the execution of eight senior military officers for alleged corruption and embezzlement of public funds. In his judgment, the president believed that the country would not make any economic progress, without such revolution. The same exercise has, at one more time or the other, been replicated in many other countries. While not advocating such a step as all judgment should be committed to God, a lesson from that action, however, is that there is a day of reckoning for every evil done by man.

In our text, immediately after the disgraceful death of Korah, Dathan, Abiram and the 250 noble men that gathered themselves against Moses, God ordered Eleazar to begin a process that would enthrone a new order. He ordered the cleansing of the tabernacle to close the chapter of the rebellious men and to wipe away the ugly incident from their memory.

Like God's judgment on Korah and his cohorts, every act of rebellion always has great and terrifying consequences. We are warned against any action that amounts to rebellion. It is unchristian for anybody to use violence to try to change a constituted authority, either in the church or secular world. God has a way of ridding bad eggs whenever He wants to make necessary adjustments.

Above all, we must always obey God rather than men. Just as Eleazar obeyed Him. Sinners cannot be vessels unto honour. They must be born again. Thereafter, sanctify, consecrate and yield themselves unto God. Only then can they be used as vessels for God's service.

Thought for the day: "A cleansed vessel is an awesome instrument for God's use."

TEXT: PSALMS 101:1-8

KEY VERSE: "I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart" (Psalms 101:2).

Sometimes, people wonder what constitutes holy living. "If I say I am holy, what does this mean?" they ask. To some, holiness is a kind of abstract experience which is difficult to grasp or explain. They think it only exists in the heart and in dogma, but impracticable. They rule out the possibility of holy living in this present world.

Our passage however gives us a practical definition and demonstration of holiness. It shows that it is a reality and quite possible in the life of every Christian. King David made a clear decision backed up by a strong determination to be holy. His holiness affected his association and relationships. He had nothing to do with the ungodly who is wicked, deceitful and boastful. He only kept company and did business with the faithful who walk in a perfect way.

Though the Lord has graciously made adequate provision for our holiness, we can not possess it without our willingness and determination. Holy living is the practical responsibility of every believer. We must make a daily determination to be holy both in our secret and public lives.

We cannot expect to be holy in our minds and thoughts if we continually gaze on unclean things on the TV, Internet, handsets or literature that we read. Holiness will not only affect our attitude, character and conduct, but also our associations. We cannot successfully maintain a daily holy life if our intimate associates are ungodly. Their sinful lifestyle will certainly rub off on us. When we seek close friendship only with the Christlike, it helps us safeguard our experience. However, we must understand that salvation precedes holiness and without it, the holiness experience becomes a mirage.

Thought for the day: "God's grace and personal resolve promote holy living."

TEXT: 1 KINGS 17:8-16

KEY VERSE: "Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee" (1 Kings17:9).

Famine in human history is ancient and recurrent. Abraham, with his son and grandson, Isaac and Jacob respectively, had their own experiences of this unpleasant situation. However, the fact is that God gave each of them victory.

The text reveals another episode of famine in the land of Israel. The whole nation, including the prophet of God, felt the devastation which this calamity unleashed on the people. The divine providence that brought Elijah the prophet, the widow of Zarephath and her household out of famine is the focus of our reflection this day.

Elijah obeyed God's instruction that he should go to Zarephath and dwell there for his sustenance. The widow on her part, obeyed with adorable submission, the word and instruction of the prophet to provide him a little cake. And the God of miracle multiplied the meagre flour and oil of the poor woman into a store house of food that sustained them all. "And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she and he (Elijah) and her house, did eat many days."

Faith in the living God and obedience to His faithful servants will fetch us all our needed miracles in life. Indeed, faith in Christ can enable us soar over all problematic situations. The force and effect of faith in action are quite observable in the lives of trusting saints. Faith fixes all things for us, including food in famine. True! We can all feed fat in famine when we obey God's word and stay where He has provided for our succour.

Thought for the day: "All that we need in life is in Jesus. He satisfies adequately."

TEXT: MATTHEW 17:22-27

KEY VERSE: "Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee" (Matthew 17:27).

The contemporary world is a pervasive one, full of offences orchestrated by Satan and his cohorts. Christ Jesus who is the Master and Governor of the whole universe, had warned His disciples that offences must come, but woe to that person through whom they are meted out. The Christian position on offences, like our Lord remarked in the text, is that the believer should not allow it become a working tool in Satan's hands. We must avoid it.

The believer should be circumspect in every situation and ensure that he does not encourage any strife between his neighbour and himself at home, workplace or business centre, on the street or anywhere. The Lord has called us unto peace. He exemplified it in spite of the numerous avowed enemies that ganged up against Him during His earthly ministry.

Taking a non-vengeful stance in our relationship with others does not mean we are to become a jellyfish, ready to compromise with offenders in all situations. Never at all! Christ our Lord was resolute in His pursuit of God's will for His life and ministry. He never allowed His detractors to undo Him from God's purpose. We must prayerfully and wisely pursue peace with offenders. God will provide us the needed grace and wisdom to know when to answer fools according to their folly and when not to answer them.

However, we are in a permissive world of offences. All we need is grace and wisdom to live with the challenges life presents and be determined to overcome in all things, until we receive the royal welcome from the Master at the pearly gates of heaven.

Thought for the day: "To enjoy peace and spiritual health, be peaceful to all especially offenders."

TEXT: ISAIAH 30:1-17

KEY VERSE: "Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of Me; and that cover with a covering, but not of My spirit, that they may add sin to sin" (Isaiah 30:1).

Not long ago, there was a case of mutiny in a country's armed forces in Africa. Some aggrieved soldiers raised their voices on the quality of food and poor maintenance services rendered to them. What started as a mere complaint soon snowballed into a large scale mutiny resulting in the death sentence on scores of the servicemen. The situation moved the nation and the citizens to cry out in unison for leniency on the erring soldiers.

Rebellion often starts imperceptibly with one or few people, and becomes epidemic, if not checked. The nation of Israel and their leaders – both spiritual and secular – had repeated records of rebelling against God, His word and will.

The passage today is a divine pronouncement of judgment against the rebellious children, who counsel themselves deceitfully against God and His revealed will for the holy nation. Judgment is against those who would add sin to sin that they may reap iniquity and damnation. The rebellion of the people of Israel attracted severe woes on the rebels.

It is unimaginable that Israel would ever desire to go down to Egypt for help. They established a military alliance with the army of Pharaoh without consultation with the God of Israel who had dealt severely with Egypt and assured them that they would see these Egyptians no more forever. Presumption, self-management and unbelief are the actual causes of rebelling against God and His word.

To shun rebellion, we must guide our hearts with all diligence and ensure that no root of bitterness against God or His servants springs up from within us.

Thought for the day: "Rebellion is the product of unbelief, pride and presumption: Shun it!"

TEXT: LUKE 12:1-12

"In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy" (Luke 12:1).

Jesus identified the leaven as the insincerity and hypocrisy of the Pharisees. They observed outward ceremonies of religion without inner and character transformation. Many today have the appearance of obedience to codes and regulations without corresponding piety.

The Pharisees always gathered to listen to Jesus with sinister motives. Jesus knew and still knows what is in the heart of man. He knew that the multitude that gathered did not come to be helped out of their spiritual blindness. Most of them had come to find a word to ensnare Him.

Jesus was not deterred by their schemes and wicked plots. He knew them and what they had come to do. Jesus therefore, advised His disciples to be resolute in their faith in God and in their commitment to the work of the Kingdom. He urged them never to fear any mortal but only God who had the ability to deliver and destroy now and in the world to come.

Most times, we misread the motives of those who attend our fellowship meetings; who come to spy out the simplicity of our worship and the commitment of genuine souls. They pretend they are with us but they come to cause division and to lead others astray. They come to criticise and water down the word of God. They are those who point us to other churches, how strict we are and the need to lower the standard to accommodate others. It takes a spiritual eye to see such insincerity. Many people have been led out of faith and destroyed.

As believers, we must not be drawn into any fellowship that is capable of corrupting our convictions in the Lord.

KEY VERSE: "Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein" (Jeremiah 6:16).

The search for truth and discovery of the ultimate path to life is a universal quest. Wise men in all ages have tried with varying degrees of frustrations to figure out the right paths for themselves and their societies. These had led to the founding of different religious beliefs, social philosophies and ideologies, which have filled the world today with confusion.

The responsibility of every one is to search out the true path to life and peace, which God has approved for mankind. The focus of our reflection today is the failure of the children of Israel to continue in the good old path which God established for them through unchanging covenants with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob instead of pursuing the vain worship of the heathen.

We owe it a duty to ourselves and to posterity to know Christ Jesus, who made an indisputable declaration that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He presented Himself preeminently to concerned seekers of the truth. We should also reveal Him to people around us. This is the only way the world can be saved and men encouraged to walk the good old path.

It is disheartening that while Prophet Jeremiah urged the people of Israel to walk the good path and find rest for their souls, they rebuffed this plead and persuasion bluntly, telling him: "we will not walk therein" (Jeremiah 6:16). We must never think nor behave like them.

God has promised to pour out His anger and fury on those who will not walk in His approved path. Save yourself the trauma of unbelief and rebellion. Believe and walk with Jesus now and always.

Thought for the day: "No alternative to the old path. Only the wise treds it."
