JUDGEMENT IS CERTAIN

TEXT: JUDGES 2:11-23

"And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and He said, Because that this people hath transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto My voice" (Judges 2:20).

The reason organizations have rules and regulations is for the orderly and decent conduct of their affairs. This is a necessary bedrock on which the successful attainment of the organization's objectives depend. Obedience to such rules and regulations is of paramount importance. Failure to observe the rules attracts disciplinary measure.

The history of the children of Israel, particularly their relationship with the Almighty is one that elicits a feeling of awe and indignation. Today, they are on the mountain top obeying God implicitly; tomorrow, they are down the valley worshiping man-made idols. Yet, God would not utterly abandon them; He would send a prophet to warn them. God's commandment ought to serve as a constant reminder of the benefit of obedience and the inescapable punishment for rebellion.

Baal worship involved cult, prostitution and child sacrifice. The prophets repeatedly condemned Baal worship with its associated sacrifices and warned the Israelites of the anger of God. They were, most times, far too gone to pay any heed. Soon, the nation began to decline "because they forsook the LORD and served Baal and Ashtoreth" (verse 13).

The inevitable eventually happened to them as "the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel." He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy" (Proverbs 29:1). Why not take a cue from the sad and unfortunate example of Israel and avoid courting God's ire and indignation.

Thought for the day: To be stubborn and obstinate before God is to court His anger and Judgement.

In the Old Testament a priest do stand as an intermediary between man and God but in this present age, we can come to God directly without fear and as believers we are to reconcile sinners to God.

Jesus is now our High Priest and Mediator. Praise the Lord!

INTERCESSORS NEEDED

TEXT: EZEKIEL 22:23-31

"And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none" (Ezekiel 22:30).

While taking a stroll down the street one day, John Wesley came upon a man who was down on his knees breaking stones. Whatever instrument it was that the man was using, he seemed to be doing so with much ease from his kneeling position. Wesley made a spiritual application of what he saw and exclaimed: "Ah, I wish I could break the hearts of some who hear me as easily as you are breaking these stones!" Looking at Wesley, the man replied: "Did you ever try breaking them on your knees?"

Like the question of the man in the story above, God is searching for those who will go on their knees and intercede for our society for the high level of corruption virtually in every of its segment: the diversion of resources, the collapse of ethics and moral values, cultism on our campuses, inter-ethnic squabbles, fraudulent practices, infidelity among couples and large-scale immoral lifestyles among the youth and adults and worship places becoming a place of profanity. Is it a small thing to you? Don't you realise that your own children are in this society and can be negatively influenced? Are you complacent about the wrath of God coming on all those who practise these evils?

God is still searching today as He did in the time of Ezekiel for people of prayer, who will change the darkness in our society and nation to light. Ours is to intercede and God's is to answer. If we refuse to stand in the gap, there is no guarantee that we and our children will be spared the consequences of the evils in our nation. Many innocent people have become victims of calamities and wars that were triggered by the indiscretions of a few. Thus we cannot afford to fold our arms, while the agents of Satan continue to wreak havoc in our communities and nation.

WINNING THE HOME BATTLE

TEXT: JUDGES 6:6-16

KEY VERSE: "And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?" (Judges 6:14).

One of the toughest battles to fight is the battle within. It is a lot easier to identify external foes, study their tactics and take them on in battle. But most times, we hardly recognise the internal foes or we are not bold enough to see them as deadly foes that must be defeated. Our lack of courage may be due to our fear of the reaction of those who will be affected by our decisions or because of whatever temporary pleasure we may forfeit for fighting this battle.

Gideon faced this kind of tough task in the first leadership assignment God gave him. The biggest problem he faced was not the Midianites, but his people who were given wholly to the worship of Baal. His first task therefore was to throw down the idol of his father's house, signalling his disgust for idolatry. That was sure to incur the wrath of his people, but he had to do this otherwise they would never have victory over their external foes. And thank God, he did!

Before we can take on external enemies, we have to first examine potential problems in our own souls. Check up if you have thrown down those idols of "Baal" around you. They may be long-held family traditions and practices that run contrary to the will and word of God. They may be bottled-up enmity and grudges against another; or a long-cherished carnal indulgence that hinders you from giving your best to the Lord. Understand that no amount of prayers and deliverances conducted for you can give you total and permanent victory until you willingly throw down those idols! Take the step now.

Thought for the day: "It is wisdom to make those changes that make people around you uncomfortable."

THE POWER OF FAITH

TEXT: MARK 9:14-29

KEY VERSE: "Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth" (Mark 9:23).

A small child named Thomas A. Edison came home with a letter from school. The content of the letter was: "Your son is mentally deficient; we cannot let him attend our school anymore. He is expelled." Edison's mother's eyes welled with tears as she said aloud positively, "Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn't have good enough teachers to train him..." The mother took up the tutoring of Thomas effectively and successfully until she fell ill and passed on. Many years after Edison's mother died, he became one of the greatest inventors of the century. Edison was a mentally deficient child, whose mother turned him into the genius of the century. Faith produces something from nothing.

In our passage, Jesus upbraided His disciples for their inability to heal an epileptic child brought to them. He described their failure as resulting from their lack of faith. Faith in God's promises and faithfulness changes situations and circumstances.

Nothing is impossible for a man or woman of faith. Whoever exercises faith always dwells in the realm of the supernatural. He visualises God's unlimited supply, unquestionable authority over circumstances, unrestrained power over nature and His control over all issues. If prayer is the "staff" with which a Christian walks with God, then faith is the "key" to open God's treasure-store.

Without faith, we cannot attain to His presence or obtain anything from Him. How rich are you in faith? Build up your faith and experience victory and rest on all sides.

Thought for the day: "Through faith, you can both save yourself and others."

JUST RECOMPENSE

TEXT: ISAIAH 24:1-23

KEY VERSE: "The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant" (Isaiah 24:5).

God is just. He rewards piety, faithfulness, dedication, commitment and righteousness. In His faithfulness, He does not spare the unrepentant sinner, the unrighteous, the wicked and all who repay kindness with evil and wickedness.

God's indignation and fearful judgment is always towards the ungrateful: the rich, poor, freemen, bondmen, educated, illiterate, religious and irreligious "because they have transgressed the laws, changed ordinance and broken the everlasting covenant." Every unrighteousness is sin. God is not a respecter of person or nation. "The wicked shall be turned into hell; and all the nations that forget God" (Psalms 9:17).

God's severe judgment is hanging on the neck of all who defy Him in spite of His goodness, mercies and loving kindness to them. Surely, He is good to all and in His magnanimity, He has endowed both man and land with rich deposit of His goodness. All those who therefore dare God and use what He has given to them - material wealth, mineral resources, intellect, wisdom, knowledge, positions - in ways that desecrate His name and promote ungodliness are courting His fierce judgment.

Every human being is a free moral agent. God gave all liberty to use whatever He has given to us, including our life, in the way we choose. Our response to God's unquantifiable kindness will determine the kind of reward we should expect from Him now and in eternity. However, God's anger and indignation can be avoided by turning from all wicked ways, repenting from all known sins and turning to God through Jesus Christ.

Thought for the day: "What a man decides ultimately determines his destiny."

THE BATTLE IS THE LORD'S

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 17:38-51

KEY VERSE: "And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and He will give you into our hands" (1 Samuel 17:47).

The enemy's stature was greatly intimidating. A giant, he was! In warfare, he was a veteran; an undefeatable champion of his time. His weapons, built for his defence and for the destruction of his opponents were unique. He was proud, boastful and confident of his victory. His name is Goliath of Gath.

On the other side was a lad, untested in professional warfare, inexperienced in the intricacies of battle, fair in complexion and delicately built. He had never been to the battle front in his life because he had been taking his father's sheep for grazing. Though ready to take up the challenge of the boastful opponent, he could not use the armour provided by the commander-in-chief of his own army, King Saul. He went into the combat only in his shepherd's clothing with a sling and five smooth stones. With just one shot, the enemy fell. His name is David.

David's victory came through his belief and confession. "The battle is the LORD'S". His trust in God is unequalled. Like David, when accosted by an enemy, a situation or a challenge that seems to dwarf us, we should quickly realise and confess that we have the One who has never lost a battle. He is the Lord of hosts.

Whatever we see in the physical appearance and whatever we hear from or about our opponent must not be allowed to make us doubt the power of our mighty God or to shake our faith in Him. No doubt, there could be suggestions to use other strange and untried instruments of warfare. A Christian should resolutely say, "on Christ the solid Rock I stand." And God will make us to be more than conquerors.

Thought for the day: "Those who put God in the forefront of their warfare will never know defeat."

THE LORD'S WAYS

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 3:18-25

KEY VERSE: "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Colossians 3:23).

Far back in Europe during the Middle Ages, a group of religious men and women thought that because the world had morally sunk too low for corporate safety, they needed to physically separate from society in order to avoid contamination. They believed that this would make them escape the eventual hell waiting for those defiling themselves in the world. So, they established monasteries where, far removed from the populations of their communities, they lived in expectation of Christ’s Second Coming to take His bride home. But alas, a great deal of acts of defilement and promiscuity were reported to have been committed in the monasteries.

Contrary to what the medieval monks believed and practised, the Bible teaches that the solution to the challenge of moral decadence in the society is for believers to faithfully obey rules for Christian households, which the world would notice and emulate. The answer is not to run from them or abandon our position as light bearers in this world of darkness. We are to use every opportunity and ability at our disposal to preach to the degenerates around us and exhibit virtues of heavenly love and patience along with meekness.

The wife should submit to the husband, who in turn loves his wife and is not bitter towards her. Children should obey their parents and fathers should be careful not to provoke them. Servants must be honest in the discharge of their duties while they display a fear of God that entails obedience to the authority at home.

The Christian home should be the storehouse of learning that the world looks up to as their Bible. We can change the world and make it conform to heavenly attitude if we conduct ourselves "as to the Lord, and not unto man".

Thought for the day: "The faithful Christian is the Bible of the unbeliever."

STRENGTH IN WEAKNESS

TEXT: PSALM 119:137-144

"Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights" (Psalm 119:143).

Those who would not serve God in difficult or tough times would have much to learn from the Psalmist in our reading today. Those who remember to praise their Creator only when the going is good are still miles away from understanding the dynamics of the Kingdom of God the way the Psalmist did. It is only those who do not falter in the days of trouble that enjoy an even relationship with God.

This is the sum of the Psalmist's experience. It is also the story of the sincere follower of the Lord. The writer of the psalm, guided by the Holy Spirit, first establishes the fact that God is righteous in both what He does and in the laws He issues to instruct man. He asserts the point that God is faithful in His dealings with man. He then proceeds to declare that "Thy word is very pure: therefore, thy servant loveth it" (verse 140).

Once we admit all these sacred truths, it follows that we would serve God and honour Him under any condition. It is the reason the psalmist is "small and despised yet do not I forget thy precepts," even when others have forgotten God's commandments (verse 139). The true believer in Jesus Christ would not abandon God to "follow a multitude to do evil" (Exodus 23:2). He would not succumb to immoral practices or absorb the doctrines of unrighteousness even if he is the last man standing on the matter of holiness.

Obeying God's injunctions during trials, temptations and persecution would be a thing of joy for the Christian whose focus is on heaven. It will not be the time to make ourselves unavailable for the work in the Lord's vineyard." Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights" (verse 143). This should be the testimony of every Christian who is conscious of the fact that he is a pilgrim here.

THE GOSPEL IS FOR ALL

TEXT: ACTS 10:34-48

KEY VERSE: "Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him" (Acts 10:34,35).

Cornelius, the centurion was a devout man who feared God with his household, gave much alms to the people and prayed always. But he was not saved. God was concerned; so, He sent an angel directing him to send for Apostle Peter who was to instruct him on how he could be saved.

Peter came and met him with some near relatives and friends gathered to hear him. After explaining how "unlawful" it was for the Jews to associate with men of other nations, he proceeded to tell them of the redemptive work of Christ. He explained how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and power to do good works of preaching, healing and delivering the oppressed, and how the gospel message was spread throughout the land, even at Jerusalem where He was crucified. But then, He rose up the third day and showed Himself to His disciples and commanded them to take the message of forgiveness of sins through His name to all men. As he was speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles to the surprise of the Jews that were with Peter.

The will of God is that all men should be saved by faith in the finished work of Christ. The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ which encapsulate the gospel message are the most important news item ever given in world history. That the vilest of all sinners who places his faith in Christ can be saved and made a saint within minutes is the greatest miracle of God.

No one today, no matter how sinful, has any excuse not to receive the free salvation Christ has purchased for all. Every living person must take advantage of the gospel message to receive pardon and salvation and avoid an eternity of weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Thought for the day: "God is not willing that any should perish."

TRUE WISDOM

TEXT: ACTS 10:34-48

KEY VERSE: "But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory" (1 Corinthians 2:7,8).

Scripturally, wisdom is defined as the ability to assess and judge issues and situations correctly; the ability to follow the best course of action on the basis of sound knowledge and understanding. This ought to be contrasted with the wisdom of the world which seeks to measure all forms of wisdom merely on the basis of human knowledge, understanding and rationality.

The Biblical concept of wisdom is quite a distance away from the standard view which is subjected to philosophical and rational thought in explaining the deep mysteries of human existence. This has been described variously in the Scriptures as the wisdom of this world; human wisdom; the wisdom of men; the wisdom of this age and man’s wisdom.

In our text, Paul the apostle, in proffering answers to the questions of the Corinthian church, made it clear that there is a world of difference between biblical wisdom and the wisdom of the world. The first principle of biblical wisdom is that people should humble themselves before God in total obedience and accept the message of the cross as real and final.

Unbelievers do not see the gospel as the power of God unto salvation. Your decision to follow the Lord seems foolish and silly to them. The world still clings to the wisdom of this age which eliminates God from their knowledge. God's wisdom is a mystery. He chooses both base and foolish things to confound the worldly wise. You must understand that the only true option open to you is to stop rationalising the message of salvation and accept Christ today and retain Him in your life forever. This is the only true type of wisdom that humanity needs.

Thought for the day: "True wisdom is that which enables fallen man to reconcile with his Creator."

NO LONGER THE REJECTED STONE

TEXT: MARK 12:1-12

KEY VERSE: "And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?" (Mark 12:10,11).

It is only the fool who says in his heart that "there is no God" and argues that God is not the Lord over the universe. Even Nebuchadnezzar, who doubted God's existence eventually acknowledged Him as "the most High…whose dominion is an everlasting dominion…" (Daniel 4:34).

The husbandmen who took custody of the vineyard planted by a householder could not render the expected fruits at the appointed seasons. Instead, they ill-treated the messengers of the householder by killing some and injuring others. The last messenger was the heir of the man whom he reasoned they would reverence. Instead, they seized him and killed him and planned to take full ownership of the vineyard. But the Lord of the vineyard would come, destroy those wicked husbandmen and let out the vineyard to others.

The parable is about the continual and unreasonable assaults of the Jews on the servants of God – the prophets and Christ whom they eventually crucified. Jesus Christ was rejected and killed by those He came to save and show God's perfect way. However, the Gentiles who were not His people embraced Him and were called God's people. The consolation is, at the end of time, God's people will reign with Him, singing and praising God for their redemption, and then it will be an everlasting joy for what the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ has accomplished among the inhabitants of the earth.

For now, the duty of every Christian is to make sure that he is among that happy crowd and work tirelessly to ensure he brings sinners to Christ by taking the gospel to them.

Thought for the day: "He that overcometh shall inherit all things."

THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW

TEXT: EXODUS 24:12-18

KEY VERSE: "And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to Me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them" (Exodus 24:12).

God, "...who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son..." (Hebrews 1:1,2). The question is, why does God send His word to men? What is the purpose of giving the Holy Bible to mankind? It is, of course, to reveal Himself and His purpose to man.

As God called Moses to the mountain to give him the Law and commandments which he was to teach the people, he went with Joshua up to the cloud-covered mountain. Aaron and Hur were mandated to take charge in the absence of Moses. He stayed six days before God called him up on the seventh day. He was to stay in that glory-covered mountain for forty days, before coming back with the two tables of stone containing the Ten Commandments of God.

The unquantifiable privilege God has given to man by sending to him the Holy Bible is invaluable. While many still grope in the dark today because they do not believe the written word of God, those who accept it, have greatly benefitted from His provisions of salvation from sin, holiness of life, power of the Holy Spirit, healing, deliverance, material provisions and a place in heaven. However, except a man is saved and has the Spirit of God, he will not understand the Bible and its message of redemption. That is the purpose of the Law which only the redeemed can understand. Take full advantage of God’s word, spend quality time with it and determine to fully abide by it.

Thought for the day: "God's law lifts man from the pit of ignorance into the plain of enlightenment."

JESUS'S AUTHORITY

TEXT: MARK 11:27-33

KEY VERSE: "And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things" (Mark 11:33).

Suppose you were asked to name the most outstanding man in history - who would you choose and why? Would you consider pedigree, life-passion, exploits, influence, accomplishments, death and legacies? Sure you would. What would you say of this Man who never attended school but whose words resonated with such deep insight and oratorical power that multitudes were repeatedly held spellbound by His teachings! Here was a Man who never learnt medical science; He was continuously besieged by people with all kinds of diseases and disabilities, curable and incurable, medical and mysterious. And He healed them all. His name is JESUS.

The Jewish chief priest, scribes and elders had heard and witnessed many of His miracles. He had also ridden triumphantly into Jerusalem with the people shouting, "Hosanna in the highest." Yet, they sought to know by what authority He did all that.

Jesus is the Image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of every creature. He is the Master, Ruler, Saviour, Sanctifier and the soon coming King. He has a name more powerful and far above every other name. Jesus is the only Advocate for His friends (true believers). He is the only Way to heaven (John 14:6); and the only name in heaven and earth by which men are saved. (Acts 4:12)

What other explanation do you need of His authority? Beloved, do not harden your heart. Come under His authority through repentance and faith in His atoning blood. If you do, your life will have meaning and your eternity in heaven will be sure.

Thought for the day: "In Jesus alone dwells the fullness of life."

SIMPLY EXQUISITE

TEXT: MARK 7:34-37

KEY VERSE: "And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: He maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak" (Mark 7:37).

Every generation has produced some personalities who became outstanding in their chosen fields of endeavour. The list includes technocrats, sportsmen, clergymen, politicians, businessmen, academics and other professionals. Many have been admired to the point of near worship. Truly, many of them deserve the honour accorded them. But even the best of these people have their dark side. Some of them have skeleton in their cupboards and would be hated with passion if people got close enough to know who they really were and what they represented. But this is not so with Jesus.

In His earthly life and ministry, the more closely people knew Him, the more amazed they felt about His innocence, loving-kindness and sheer power. The inhabitants of the Greek city of Decapolis said of Him, "He hath done all things well," when they observed His miraculous healing of a deaf and dumb man.

Their eloquent testimony agrees with friends and foes who encountered Christ. Of Him it was recorded, "... who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil..." Peter said of Him, "Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth." Pilate confessed, "I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man." The officers sent by the chief priests and Pharisees to arrest Him heard Him and went back to report that "Never man spake like this man." When He asked, "Which of you convinceth me of sin?" nobody came forward.

Christ is unique in every way. In His personality, passion and performance, He does all things well. Dying for our sins, He is the only worthy One to be our Saviour and Lord. If you have found Him to be so, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in [Him]". If not, then repent, forsake your sin, pick up your cross and follow Him.

Thought for the day: "The Christian's greatest commitment is to follow Christ's footsteps."

BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS

TEXT: JEREMIAH 28:1-9

"The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him" (Jeremiah 28:9)

The emergence of two prophets claiming to be of God but issuing contradictory messages was an embarrassing spectacle in the Bible which the Lord never failed to resolve decisively to teach us not to play pranks with His name. In this case, we have the false prophet Hananiah challenging Jeremiah, the true prophet and servant of God.

Hananiah, claiming to report what God had told him, said the king of Babylon who had invaded Judah and exiled the children of Israel while desecrating the temple with the seizure of the holy vessels, would return all these in two years. Now, this contradicted an earlier prophecy of God in Jeremiah 25:11,12 and later in Jeremiah 29:10 that the captivity would last 70 years. But strangely, Hananiah in announcing his own prophecy said: "Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel." What an audacity!

The difference emanated from the fact that Hananiah sought to please the people and the king with his popular but untrue declaration while Jeremiah's sole objective was to deliver the Lord's message even if it was bitter and unpopular. The true messenger of God would cease to be representing the Owner of the message the moment he submits to the whims and caprices of his audience and forges lies.

As it was at that time, so it is today. Many false prophets are out there deceiving and being deceived. They lure unsuspecting people, including believers, away from the truth. Many of them are motivated by what to eat and allure of earthly riches. But they will never escape the judgment of God. Even so, these so-called prophets are sustained by the gullible with itching ears who prefer error to sound doctrine. If there arises a people whose devotion to the true word of God is sacrosanct and treat those who peddle falsehood with disdain, surely, the ranks of false prophets will dwindle.

A TWO-FOLD CORD

TEXT: LUKE 10:1-24

KEY VERSE: "After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself would come" (Luke 10:1).

Working and walking in pairs was a common practice in the early church. As "Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer" to pray, so were Paul and Barnabas separated for the evangelistic work by the church under the instruction of the Holy Ghost. In fact, the Lord Jesus had taught the disciples this pattern by practice in His days on earth. He sent two disciples to fetch the donkey for His triumphant entry (Luke 19:29) and despatched Peter and John to prepare the Passover (Luke 22:8). In the text under consideration, He sent the disciples "two and two" for evangelistic outreach. As God declares, "It is not good that the man should be alone", the Preacher affirms: "...but woe to him that is alone."

Thus, Paul lamented: "...no man stood with me, but all men forsook me". And when Barnabas left him, he sought a partner in Silas. Loneliness should be detested by all believers. Our Lord teaches us that in our Christian walk and work, we should have a partner. You should have a Christian friend, a prayer partner and an evangelism partner. A godly husband should team up with his godly wife, a Christian brother and another brother, and two sisters together: "...two are better than one: because they have a good reward." When we team up in our evangelistic outreaches, great shall be our rewards.

Pray for a believing partner with whom you can preach the gospel sustainably. A two-person team of gospel proclaimers must always be raised and sustained in the church to ceaselessly declare the gospel as the Lord did with His disciples. If those men succeeded because they obeyed the Lord, there are clear indications of enduring success for us if we proceed in the might of the Lord to partner with one another to preach the gospel.

Thought for the day: "As Paul plants the seed of the Word, let Apollos water."

PASS THE BATON

TEXT: JUDGES 2:1-10

"And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?" (Judges 2:2).

The passage introduces us to the distressing life in Israel in the generations that came after Joshua following the settlement of the Israelites in the Promised Land. It was a cycle of sin, judgment and repentance, and then another round of transgression, punishment and remorse. These cases of recurring apostasy leading to oppression at the hands of their enemies were however not God's plan because He made this agreement with their patriarch Abraham in Genesis 17:7: "I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee."

While God kept His side of the pact, Israel did not. Rather than destroy the inhabitants and idols of Canaan whom they met there, they retained them. These became a snare unto them, leading them to disobey God, their Redeemer. The Lord commanded Israel to teach her children and future generations which would occupy Canaan all His statutes. But they did not comply and the consequence was clear: "And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel" (Judges 2:10). A generation guided by the laws of God ought not to depart without passing His word to the next generation.

Christian families must not leave the duty of imparting biblical values in the hands of the society or schools. It is the primary responsibility of believing parents to relentlessly teach their children the ways of God. The home should be their first Church where they learn about the love of God and how to reverence Him. When they see their Christian parents, they will see the love of God radiating in them and be convinced to emulate them.

HE'LL WIPE AWAY ALL TEARS

TEXT: ISAIAH 25:1-12

KEY VERSE: "He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it" (Isaiah 25:8).

Mrs. J.M. Hunter, a renowned 20th century hymn writer commented in one of her famous hymns titled: "He'll wipe all tears away" that "as day by day I journey, I'm weary oft and worn; But to my heart, a message on wings of love is borne: It tells me there is coming a bright and happy day, when God, my heav'nly father, will wipe all tears away. He'll wipe all tears away. He'll wipe all tears away…He'll wipe all tears away…He'll wipe all tears away; our kind and loving father will wipe all tears away."

Our text emphasises God's messianic banquet, celebrating the overthrow of evil and the joy of eternity with God. It shows that God intended His saving message to go out to the whole world, not just to the Jews only. Both Gentiles and Jews will celebrate together.

At that time, God will end death forever. The people who will participate in this great feast will be those who have been living by faith. The Lord will save His own. When He speaks, He does what He says. It is comforting to know that God's plans and activities are closely tied to His word. Also, His ultimate victory will be seen when death, our ultimate enemy, will be defeated and our tears will be wiped away. Then, we shall experience the glorious presence of the Lord. However, this experience is for the people who have waited patiently for His return. They shall have their tears wiped away forever.

Every sinner must come to the Lord in genuine repentance and the believer should rejoice in the salvation of the Lord until He returns to usher us into His blissful Kingdom, where there shall be no more tears forever!

Thought for the day: "Our light affliction today will give way to eternal bliss ultimately."

FIND PERFECT PEACE

TEXT: ISAIAH 26:1-11

KEY VERSE: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee" (Isaiah 26:3).

On a Sunday morning in August, 1875, the vicar of Harrogate, Canon Gibbon, happened to preach from the text, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee," and alluded to the fact that in the Hebrew language, the words are "Peace, Peace" twice repeated, and happily translated in the 1611 translation by the phrase, "Perfect Peace." He emphasised that perfect peace could only be found in Jesus Christ. This sermon gave birth to Bishop Edward Henry Bickersteth's great hymn "Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin? The blood of Jesus whispers peace within." Truly, only the blood of Jesus can guarantee perfect peace.

We can never avoid strifes in the world, but with God we can know perfect peace even in turmoil. When we are devoted to Him, our whole attitude is steady and stable. With God's unchanging love and mighty power, we are not perturbed by the raging sea. From our text, the affirmation of God's protection and peaceful life for the righteous is vividly presented. He is our everlasting strength, we must trust in Him to bring all things to pass.

However, there are conditions to be fulfilled before you become beneficiaries of His perfect peace and divine protection. Only when you focus your mind on Him, trust in Him, desire Him with all your heart and patiently wait for Him that you can experience perfect peace. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," says the Lord.

Thought for the day: "Life without Christ is a life of crisis."

THE TRANSFIGURATION

TEXT: MARK 9:1-13

KEY VERSE: "And after six days Jesus taketh with Him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and He was transfigured before them" (Mark 9:2).

A preacher once said: "Sometime ago, we noticed that a tree planted at the sunny end of a house had large and beautiful flowers and fruits. It was a feast to the eyes. But what an amazing difference in some of the branches that trailed round the corner of the house where they got much less sun. The blossoms were starred and drooping, and there was little promise of fruiting. They had the same root and stem in common. But while one part of the tree was in full glorious light, the other branches were in shade."

Our spiritual enlightenment is directly proportional to our exposure to the depth of the word of God. Many Christians today are in search of power, anointing and deep knowledge of the things of God. They may spend about forty days fasting and praying on the mount in order to receive the mysteries of God. Unfortunately, these people come back home with tales of woes, of one demonic affliction or the other.

Peter, James and John were three of the original twelve disciples of Christ. The Lord chose them out of the pack to go to the mountain. There, He had a rendezvous with Moses and Elijah, the representatives of the law and the prophets. This was one of the greatest revelations that the religious leaders in Israel would have done everything possible to receive. But it is not religiosity but real closeness to the Lord that brings transformation.

Do you want a similar transformation experience? Then get closer to God and His word. Obey every jot and tittle of it; His grace will flow into your life. Stop following the Saviour from afar off. Opt for a closer walk with Him from today.

Thought for the day: "In His presence there is fullness of joy."

KEEP IT HOLY

TEXT: JEREMIAH 17:19-27

"Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers" (Jeremiah 17:22).

Sometime in the history of the children of Israel, the nation was so money-minded that they took to doing business on the revered Sabbath Day, contrary to the instruction of God which forbade it. It was not a legal code they were violating; rather they were in grave breach of centuries-old sacred pact God had made with their ancestors.

As a loving God who would not want swift destruction to come upon His erring people, He sent His servant Jeremiah to warn them to amend their ways. God said in verses 21 and 22: "…Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day… neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day as I commanded your fathers…" He asked Jeremiah to place himself strategically at the gates of Jerusalem to issue the warning.

The point was that keeping the Sabbath was a sign that the nation and its people were obedient to God and His word. Not keeping the rules of rest from work on that day meant a rejection of God's inviolable commandment or not having any relationship with Him and His blessings. It amounted to forfeiting the inheritance reserved for submissive children.

Now, God would not allow His law to be trampled upon without punishment. He first spoke of the enduring blessings He would bestow on the people and their rulers if they obeyed Him concerning the Sabbath Day. However, should they continue to turn deaf ears at Him, He would consume Jerusalem with unquenchable fire. This is not at all uncharacteristic of the God of Justice who would not tolerate impunity.

He rewards obedience and punishes disobedience. He rewards those who regard His mercy and love, but frowns at those who abuse His grace and lovingkindness.

DRAW THE CURTAINS

TEXT: ISAIAH 43:18-21

KEY VERSE: "Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert" (Isaiah 43:18,19).

The axiom that whoever sits down to recount his past failures and disappointments increases his sorrows holds true. Life is not about the number of times we reflect on the past; it is being able to identify our past misdeeds and make amends, to secure a glorious future.

Our text deals with God's unfathomable love and mercy towards Israel. At this time, they had sinned against God through idolatry, disobedience and several other abominations. They disobeyed His commandments and went into spiritual harlotry. In fact, they disregarded God's warnings through His prophets, who revealed the danger that awaited them as a rebellious stiff-necked people.

The Israelites, however, had allowed their present circumstance to blur their vision. And they were quick to forget the past victories God had given them. Even then, God's mercy remains inexhaustible. Anytime they repented and returned to Him, He assured them that He would do something new in their lives that would never be compared to the wondrous things He had done in the past. But they were not to dwell on the past because they were to experience a new time of forgiveness, blessing, restoration and God's abiding presence.

Believers who have gone away from the Lord are called upon to return to Him. People who have not experienced the saving grace and power of Christ are expected to repent and accept Him as their personal Lord and Saviour. Together, we are to be witnesses of the grace of God and the great provision He has made for the reconciliation of the lost world. This we will effectively do if we take our minds away from our past failings and disappointments.

Thought for the day: "Your future is ahead and not in the past."

A FRESH BEGINNING

TEXT: ISAIAH 43:18-21

KEY VERSE: "Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert" (Isaiah 43:19).

William Kerfoot was a respected, successful businessman when the great Chicago fire of 1871 hit, leaving his office and portfolio in ashes. But he wasted no time rebuilding. He put up a wood shack that read: "All gone but wife, children, and energy." He then placed an advert on the Tribune on October 11 and 12 telling customers his business was still open. By October 13, his advertisement proclaimed he was back "at his old place, 89 East Washington Street." The editorial of that day encouraged Chicagoans through this man's courage to "Cheer up, Chicago will rise again."

Israel's seventy years of captivity in Babylon had left almost an indelible mark on their lives. The humiliation, the shame of losing the war, the stress of being uprooted from the cities they had known and lived in for hundreds of years, and the deportation to a strange land, was like a wound that refuses to heal. Prophet Isaiah, in our text, prophesied about the new thing that God has promised to do for His people. It was just the right words to heal their present wounds and prepare them for the future golden rule of Christ where the earth shall be renewed in a way it was never before.

Many times, the memories of the past year come back to haunt us and halt the prospects and progress in the new. As we begin the New Year, we must forget the failures and missed opportunities of the past. We must remember that we cannot enjoy the benefits and the opportunities in the New Year if we continue to ruminate on the distress, disappointments and disgrace of the past one.

God has promised to do a new thing in our lives. All disappointments, sicknesses, pains and problems of the past year must be allowed to go with it as we welcome a New Year of opportunities. Happy New Year!

Thought for the day: "A new beginning comes to those who forget the past."

DO NOT PARTAKE

TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 10:14-33

KEY VERSE: "But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils" (1 Corinthians 10:20).

Apostle Paul warned the Corinthian believers against eating food sacrificed to idols to avoid being contaminated. They were prohibited from attending heathen feasts. In this chapter, he reminded them that the things the Gentiles offered were to the devils. He encouraged the brethren to be sensitive to the needs of other believers who were weak in faith when making decisions about what to eat or drink for conscience sake.

The need to warn believers against participating in heathen feasts and eating food sacrificed to the devil was timely. The Jerusalem council of elders issued a decree to the gentiles believers to keep themselves from meat offered to idols, from blood, things strangled and formication (Acts 15:29). The Spirit of God that spoke through the Apostle is still the same today because God never changes. In these last days where the line dividing between the clean and unclean, the acceptable and unacceptable has become so thin, compromise has become the order of the day.

As believers, we should be careful to maintain purity and sanctity in whichever place we go or live. Some restaurants and five-star hotels in Asian countries serve what they call "temple food" or "monk food" to promote their pagan practices. We should not partake in such. We must continue to live, walk and act in faith and righteousness. Our hunger, thirst and appetite must be channelled towards the consumption and assimilation of God's word which has the capacity to wholesomely transform our lives and make us fit for heaven.

Thought for the day: "Food offered to the devil carries his identity."
