Don't Go The Opposite Way
TEXT: Joshua 23:14-16

"Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until He have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you" (Joshua 23:15).

God's laws are immutable and His words, unchangeable. His decrees defy the caprices of men and His statutes transcend the variation in times. These explain why mankind has to yield to and obey His commandments without any reservation.

Although the people of Israel had promises of God's blessing premised on obedience to His commandment, they also had the unmistakable assurance of curses and woes should they disobey. The same conditions still apply today irrespective of race, age, social standing, education, wealth, position or influence of man.

The way of sin is a downhill route. Joshua states the fatal consequences of going back from the way of righteousness. As it applied to the Israelites at that time, so does it apply to all people today: the way of sin is the way of ruin. The first step usually is friendship with the ungodly; the next is getting into marriage relationship with them, doing recreation with them and a gradual emulation of their pernicious ways.

If we would cleave to the Lord, then we must always stand upon our guard for many souls are lost through carelessness. Love the Lord your God. He is faithful Who has promised. We should trust His faithfulness, love, and power; ask for His mercy and obey His commandments. Conflicts may have been severe and long; trials, great and many, but in the end, we will be able to acknowledge that His goodness and mercy followed us all the days of our life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "The downward route is a deadly route. Keep off!"

Don't Forget!
TEXT: Joshua 24:1-13

"And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat" (Joshua 24:13).

It is often said that those who fail to learn the lessons of history stand the danger of repeating its mistakes. Avoiding the mistakes of history then requires a constant remembrance of the events of history. Remembrance of past events triggered by sober or joyous moments tend to make us appreciate some pleasant memories or learn from the unpleasant ones, especially from missteps.

As revealed in our passage, God understands the power of history and its effect on people. For Israel, it was necessary to remind them again how God graciously and miraculously brought them from slavery into freedom; from a ‘no-people’ to a great-people status; how He delivered them from Egyptian bondage; His matchless providence throughout their journey in the wilderness and how He brought them to possess the Promised Land. God instructed Joshua to recount and remind the people of His good dealings with them so they would learn to love and serve Him all their days.

The text today throws challenge to us. The Almighty has done gracious things for us; He saved us from sins and made us His own children; He grants us protection and provides for us. Indeed, God has been faithful. Little wonder the psalmist in adoration, said, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases: (Psalm 103:1-3).

We should always count our blessings, appreciate His goodness and serve this gracious and good God all the days of our lives. That is the secret of receiving more from Him!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "A thoughtful person is a thankful person."

Nothing But the Truth
TEXT: Joshua 24:1-13

"If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked" (Proverbs 29:12).

The things we read, hear and give attention to provide the basis for the ideas that we hold and the values we attach to various issues and subjects in life. If we give heed to false teaching and false doctrine, we will stumble and get our faith corrupted.

Today's passage shows that it is not enough for a Christian to be honest and innocent, he must also avoid others who are corrupt, otherwise, the corruption of those strange friends and counsellors soon rubs off on him.

The Christian who is in position of influence must take up the challenge to exert only a righteous influence and promote the truth in his domain. He should give no room for backbiting, and must shun sycophants.

Christian leaders in the church or in the secular places of authority should know that it pertains to our eternal salvation to refuse the perverted modern gospel that promises everything but a pure heart and a holy heaven.

An old man who got converted a few months before his final home call revealed his heart cry when he said, "I don't want any sympathy or falsehood around me. I want every preacher and every teacher to tell me the truth even if doing of it shall cost me self-esteem, or estate, or friends or even my own life."

We should, therefore, allow the love of the eternal truth of God's word to be so firmly rooted in our hearts that we may produce fruits of righteousness to save our soul from hell. Remember, "...all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone..."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Holding to the truth secures full salvation."

Receiving To Give
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 15:1-9

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures..." (1 Corinthians 15:3,4).

A man had a bar where he sold alcoholic beverages. He was a very cruel and violent man whose presence conjured terror for his wife and ten-year-old daughter. A visible mark on the left arm of the young lady was a constant reminder of her father’s brutality. But one day, something ‘strange’ happened. A preacher came to Mr. Graham to explain the mercies and love of God through Jesus Christ. The man listened with rapt attention and demanded to know if such mercies could be extended to a man like him. On receiving an assurance from the preacher, he surrendered his life to Christ and became a changed person. For the first time, his daughter saw him smile and happy. Later, he asked for the wife’s and the daughter’s forgiveness, and took them to the church where they also gave their lives to Christ. Peace, love and joy came to the family. That is the power of the gospel.

In the passage, Paul the apostle reminded the Corinthian Christians of the authenticity of the gospel message - the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Christ - which he received that transformed his life and which he passed on to them as well.

The gospel message has such a transforming power that no matter how deep one might have gone in cultism, idol worship, atheism, drug addiction, immorality, etc., if he sincerely repents and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, salvation comes. The mercy of God is still available today. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17).

As Paul received the true gospel and passed it on to others, so must every true believer do. The Lord’s command is “...Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). It is a task that must be done.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "The gospel message changes sinners to saints."

Observing The Sabbath Rest
TEXT: Jeremiah 17:19-27

"Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers" (Jeremiah 17:22).

Good rest is necessary for recuperation and maintenance of the entire body system. Wearied and exhausted, man goes to bed at night and wakes up refreshed and ready for the new day’s activities. God Himself observed the seventh day after the creation as a day of rest.

God re-emphasised the need for Israel to keep Sabbath. They were not to bear any kind of burden on the day. If they obeyed and properly observed it, it would yield good dividends resulting in “kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David.” And people will come from far and near with diverse offerings, incense and “sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the LORD” (verse 25, 26). But failure to observe this will bring God’s judgment (verse 27).

Today, many are so busy with work. They work night and day. Some take two or three jobs in order “to make both ends meet.” Work is good, as man must labour to take care of his needs and of the family but “except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it” (Psalm 127:1), It must not be done at the expense of one’s health, family life or worship of God.

But there is another kind of rest - a better one. This rest comes from knowing God through Christ. It gives justification (Romans 5:1) which offers peace here on earth as one holds on to Christ. There is also the final rest with God in heaven. This rest is bountiful, unsurpassable and eternally blissful. But there is the need to labour for the time being to enter that rest (Hebrews 4:11). The labour involved is to walk by faith and steadfastness, preach the gospel and win souls for the Lord and serve Him unreservedly in sincerity and holiness.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Rest in Christ is the true rest."

Still Seeking The Master
TEXT: John 20:1-10

"The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulcher" (John 20:1).

“Faith, like light, should always be simple and unbending,” says Martin Luther King Jnr. Mary Magdalene was a true symbol of that faith and who a committed and an unwavering disciple should be.

The Lord Jesus had been crucified and was buried prior to the compulsory Sabbath day that forced rest on all. His sepulcher was heavily guarded by security men sent by the chief priests and Pharisees to make sure “his disciples (did not) come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead...” (Matthew 27:62-66). As it began to dawn on the first day of the week when it was yet dark, Mary Magdalene came to anoint His body only to discover the huge stone that covered the tomb had been rolled away. Unable to understand what had transpired, she went to report to Apostles Peter and John who also came, saw it and went back home. But Mary, who was determined to see her Saviour, stayed back.

The extraordinary courage and steadfastness of this blessed soul in defying all odds in her quest to find her crucified Master is reflective of a heart full of grace and gratitude towards a Saviour who had earlier delivered her from demonic possession (Luke 8:2) and saved her soul. God is never unmindful nor is He unrighteous to forget our work and labour of love (Hebrews 6:10). Christ is still calling His disciples to a wholehearted devotion and commitment to Him and His cause.

The all-consuming passion that Mary exhibited in seeking the Lord until she found Him must be the driving force that propels every believer to keep on following Christ at this present time so as to be with Him eventually in heaven (John 17:24).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "When you truly seek, you will find."

Enduring Persecution
TEXT: Jeremiah 18:18-23

"Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them" (Jeremiah 18:20).

The poor mother of a boy had prepared the only food left at home for the child as he got ready to go to school. On noticing that there was nothing else for the mother to eat, the boy started crying out of compassion for his mother. Meanwhile, as he could not explain why he was crying, the mother misunderstood it for ingratitude and started to beat him. When he came back from school, he was able to explain to the mother why he cried that morning. She hugged him and asked for his forgiveness.

Jeremiah was also often misunderstood for his messages of judgment from God which he must deliver to His people. But he had concern and sympathy for their wellbeing and continued preservation. Meanwhile, his people whose good he sought, misread him and buffeted him with imprisonment, starvation and threats of death. He cried to God for retributive judgment against those persecutors.

While vengeful prayers were common under the Old Testament dispensation, it is no longer so in the New. Christ, our perfect Example, did not only teach His followers to love their enemies but also to pray for them (Luke 23:34). Stephen also prayed for those who stoned him, which led to the salvation of Paul the apostle. Truly, persecution can at times overstretch the patience of the believer. But he is urged to rejoice because of the future glory that awaits him (Revelation 2:10).

Are you suffering persecution today for Christ’s sake? Cheer up, and look unto Him, “who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame...” Sooner or later, you will be with Him in glory if you do not give up.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Persecution may be fierce, but he that endures shall be saved."

Receive Cleansing
TEXT: Leviticus 14:10-20

"And the priest shall offer the sin offering, and make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed from his uncleanness; and afterward he shall kill the burnt offering" (Leviticus 14:19).

Leprosy is a contagious disease. It does not only affect the carrier to the extent of eating up the toes and fingers but it can also spread rapidly among people. That is why God instructed that all lepers must be put outside the camp so as not to spread the disease and defile His people.

In our text, God gave the priest the procedures for purification for anyone who has been healed of leprosy. The beneficiary was to bring certain items which included two he lambs without blemish, one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish, three tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil and so on. The priest performed the rituals which included offering the animals for trespass and sin offerings for an atonement for him. After all that, the cleansed leper would be received back into the camp, to live as a normal citizen.

As evil and abhorrent as physical leprosy is, spiritual leprosy - sin - is even worse. But thanks be to God, our Lord Jesus Christ has the power to cure both. When He came across Zacchaeus, He healed him of his “leprosy” of sin (Luke 19:1-10). The woman that was caught in adultery who would have been stoned to death also received healing from her “leprosy” of adultery.

The fall of Adam brought sin, sickness and death upon mankind. But Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has brought hope and light to man. Today, there is no reason anyone should remain with any kind of leprosy - be it physical or spiritual. Jesus Christ saves from sin; He heals all manner of sicknesses and preserves His people from the hands of the evil one. He stands at the door and knocks; anyone that opens to Him, He will come in to save, heal and give him life - eternal life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Jesus is Lord over all infirmities."

Trusting God, Our Helper
TEXT: Psalm 115:1-11

"Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: He is their help and their shield" (Psalm 115:11).

One of the stories from Kathryn Kuhlman’s book, I believe in Miracles, tells the story of a couple, Charles and Given Woods whose elder daughter, 13-year-old Sheryl suffered greatly from epileptic seizures which kept on aggravating. Doctors had done all they could without any clue. The girl, brilliant and athletic, fell in school in one of the games which gradually developed into a nightmare for the family that the mother wished she would die to end her excruciating sufferings. But while attending Kuhlman's revival service, the father heard a voice saying, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee...” To the glory of God, during their second visit, the young girl was completely healed.

Our text can be summarised under three main ideas. One, all glory must be given to God alone for His mercies as He remains the sovereign God (verses 1-3); two, the idols of the heathen are lifeless and useless (verses 4-8); three, we are to trust in God because in Him lies our help (verses 9-11).

Without God, man is hopeless and helpless. He is our present help in trouble. Think of Abraham who lived in a strange land, prospered, became old and eventually went to heaven. David fought many battles and never lost any. Paul the apostle travelled to diverse nations to preach the gospel and he established many churches. God helped them all.

Our help comes from God who neither sleeps nor slumbers. He shall preserve us from all evil as we trust Him. Unfortunately, many still think their wealth, position and education can save them. Those things cannot, and will not save. We must keep on trusting Him because His thoughts towards us are thoughts of peace-to give us an expected end, We should always trust God to “Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Earthly help is short-lived but God's is peaceful and long-lasting."

Don't Ignore The Warning
TEXT: Jeremiah 19:1-15

"Because they have forsaken Me, and have estranged this place and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents" (Jeremiah 19:4).

Before the “unsinkable” Titanic sank in April 1912 in the Atlantic Ocean, warnings were sent to alert the crew and passengers that they were speeding into an iceberg. But the messages were ignored. In fact, when a nearby ship sent an urgent warning, the captain of the Titanic was talking about the time chauffeurs were to meet arriving passengers at the dock and what meals were to be ready. Preoccupied with trivia, the Titanic captain responded to the warning: “Shut up, I am talking, you’re jamming my signals.”

Jeremiah went with certain elders among the priests to the valley of Hinnom, a place that was notorious for the most hideous sin - the sacrifice of innocent children to heathen gods. Jeremiah, as commanded by God, broke a bottle symbolically at the venue to demonstrate how severe the coming divine judgment upon Judah would be for their idolatry and disobedience to the commandments of God. Israel was receiving some kind of final warning after ignoring several others earlier. At this time, God was about to deliver them into the hands of merciless Chaldeans who would lay siege to the city until the people began to practise cannibalism. Severe hunger was waiting for them. This warning was again ignored until the inevitable happened; Israel went into a long captivity to Babylon.

Often times, people are warned ahead of danger and refusal to heed such warnings has led to loss of life and property. Today, sinners ignore warnings from evangelists and preachers of the gospel regarding the coming judgment. Like the captain of the Titanic, they are driving fast to their doom without paying heed to the danger ahead.

Don’t put off salvation. The door of grace is still open today for as many as would come in.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "The route to hell comes after plying the road of procrastination."

Under Fire
TEXT: Jeremiah 20:7-18

"Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor speak any more in His name. But His word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay" (Jeremiah 20:9).

One of the most gifted speakers in church history was John Chrysostom. The name comes from a Greek word meaning ‘golden tongue.’ John was sent from Antioch to what was then Constantinople, where he preached fearlessly in the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. His denunciation of the lavish extravagance of the rich and ruling class and his condemnation of excess, infuriated many, including Empress Eudoxia who arranged for him to be exiled. But John held firm to his faith, and never compromised though under the most extreme conditions.

Prophet Jeremiah had endured so much persecution and opposition from his own countrymen, especially from the rulers and his fellow priests who denounced him as a paid agent of the Chaldeans because he prophesied about Israel’s coming captivity to Babylon. He was ridiculed, put in prison several times and almost killed. It appeared the pains and injuries had taken its toll on Jeremiah who felt very discouraged but later regained his composure.

Preaching is not a profession but a passion. It is an assignment given by God that requires grace to fulfil. It is like swimming against the tide, especially when, like Jeremiah, you are charged with the responsibility of warning nations about the coming judgment of God. Words are insufficient to describe the deep inner agony and burdens preachers endure.

Despite all the pains, the preacher is not expected to betray the trust but to stand firm as God's messenger of hope and life to those who mourn. While in pains themselves, servants of God minister comfort to others. While bearing so much injury personally, the pastors, in addition, bear the burdens of others. Please pray for your pastor! Through your prayer, he will obtain more grace to offer sacrificial service to the Lord.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Praying for your pastor amounts to edifying the body of Christ."

Was It The Devil?
TEXT: Jeremiah 21:1-14

"And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath" (Jeremiah 21:5).

Satan is blamed for everything evil. A thief who is caught red-handed with stolen items blames the devil for ‘pushing’ him into the act. This happens often whenever people need a convenient scapegoat to bear the blame for their shortcomings and failings in life. While there is a certain sense in which that can be true, it fails to take into consideration all the other issues, including our own personal responsibility for our actions.

Jeremiah told a stunned delegate from Zedekiah, king of Judah, that God Himself was fighting against Israel for their utter disregard for divine instructions and their woeful practice of idolatry. With this revelation, Israel was now doomed to surrender to their enemies, go into captivity and have their beautiful cities and the temple burnt with fire. God promised to withdraw His protection over His own people, assist the Babylonians in gaining access into the city and ensure Israel was defeated. Only those who surrendered to the Babylonians were guaranteed their lives. The king of Judah together with his counsellors were worried about the Babylonians who were already laying siege to Jerusalem without considering that their main enemies were themselves and that God was responsible for this Scourge.

Most times, we blame the devil for being behind our troubles. If it is not the devil, then it must be the work of an enemy somewhere, perhaps a witch or wizard in the village who has cast a spell on us. But the first thing to do whenever things go wrong is to look inwards, pray and find out if our ways are right with God. “If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Better to first look inwards, when challenges arise."

The Enemy Within
TEXT: Jeremiah 20:1-6

"Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD" (Jeremiah 20:2).

No treachery is worse than the betrayal by a family member or friend, Julius Caesar knew such treachery. Among the conspirators who assassinated him on March 15, 44 B.C. was Marcus Junius Brutus, a trusted friend whom Caesar had favoured as a son. According to Roman historians, Caesar first resisted the assassination but when he saw Brutus among them with his dagger drawn, he asked the famous question “You too Brutus?,” and then succumbed.

Jeremiah was put in prison in our text by someone who was supposed to be a priest and a leader in the house of the Lord. Jeremiah was a priest himself before he received the call to the office of a prophet. His message, no doubt, offended many in his country who felt he was not patriotic enough in his denunciation of Israel. But those messages came from God to Jeremiah. Pashur, wanting to dance to the gallery, arrested a fellow preacher of the gospel like himself and put him in an unhealthy dungeon. When Jeremiah was eventually brought out, he declared the deserved judgment of God upon him for his wickedness and treachery.

Sometimes, a preacher is cast in the unpopular role of preaching what people either do not want to hear or hate to accept. The best place such preachers hope to find solace is with God and his fellow preachers who should support and assist him. When such fellow ministers now become the instrument of betrayal and persecution, it is the worst kind of betrayal.

The lesson here is the need to prepare for anything. Your worst enemy could be your best friend, and your best friend, your worst enemy. When grief assumes such a deep dimension that no word of man can reach and console, the Holy Spirit is at hand to comfort and console.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "The genuine preacher of the gospel is always the target of fierce oppositions."

Cleanse The House!
TEXT: Leviticus 14:33-57

"And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet" (Leviticus 14:52).

Hyssop is a protected plant in Israel. It is a small, hardy shrub from the basil family. It is said to have cleansing properties. The hyssop plant in the Bible symbolises spiritual purification.

Certain rituals were performed to cleanse any house leprosy was found in the Old Testament. First, the house is shut up for seven days. After this period, the house is checked. If the house had signs of leprosy spreading, the entire house had to be pulled down. But if the disease did not spread, then the house was healed. The priest then performed a ceremony for cleansing the house which involved two live birds, cedar, hyssop, scarlet and running water from a river. One of the birds was killed over the basin of water, and the cedar, hyssop and the living bird was dipped into the water and the house was sprinkled with it, after which the living bird was set free.

Leprosy represents sin because it has the capacity to spread from the heart into every part of the body. The heart represents the house where the leprosy originates; for from the heart proceeds all evil thoughts which the entire body is compelled to act upon. The product of this process can be found in people's harsh speeches, immoral actions, violent behaviours, wickedness and the likes.

Cleansing has to begin from the heart. Nothing so far has been found effective in achieving total cleansing for the sinful heart of man. Religious ceremonies and rituals, together with human efforts, have unfortunately yielded no results. The only solution to the 'leprosy' of sin lies in the precious blood of our sinless Christ who died on the cross to save humanity.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "The blood of Jesus is the all-time antidote to all forms of uncleanness."

Separated For Uncleanness
TEXT: Leviticus 15:19-33

"Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation" (Leviticus 15:26).

“We are not to be isolated but insulated,” said Vance Havner, “moving in the midst of evil but untouched by it.” Jesus was holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners; yet, He was “a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”

Chapter 15 of Leviticus deals with the subject of separation of a man or woman for a period of time due to some natural uncleanness. During this period of separation, he or she is disallowed from socialising closely with friends and from going to the house of God or touching any of the holy things. A mandatory ceremony and offering for cleansing is then required before a reunion with people and the house of God can be possible. This comprises two doves or two young pigeons, the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.

Some people have taken the matter of Old Testament separation of women for reasons of uncleanness beyond boundary. It is important to highlight that these Old Testament laws affected both men and women and no mention is made about separating women from the house of God on account of natural uncleanness in the New Testament.

We are to be separate enough from immorality and ungodliness that it does not influence us. The Bible makes it clear that we should “come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord”. But whilst we steer clear from the world’s pollutions, we are expected to be close enough so that we can minister to those who are trapped in all forms of uncleanness.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "The heaven-bound believer is only in the world, not of the world."

Proper Hygiene
TEXT: Leviticus 15:1-18

"And whomsoever he toucheth that hath the issue, and hath not rinsed his hands in water, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even" (Leviticus 15:11).

In 1818, Ignaz Phillip Semmelweis was born into a world of dying women. The finest hospitals lost one out of six young mothers to the scourge of “childbed fever.” A doctor's daily routine began in the dissecting room where he performed autopsies. From there, he made his way to the hospital to examine expectant mothers without ever pausing to wash his hands. Dr. Semmelweis was the first man in history to associate such examinations with the resultant infection and death. His own practice was to wash with a chlorine solution; and after eleven years and the delivery of 8,537 babies, he lost only 184. He once said: 'Gentlemen, women are dying... For God’s sake, wash your hands.’ But no one believed him then.

The book of Leviticus is replete with teachings on separation and cleansing. It teaches about clean and unclean food and the need to wash for cleanliness' sake. In the passage under review, focus is on the uncleanness of a man, and the need to separate others from his uncleanness both for spiritual reasons and for proper hygiene. The instruction is to wash the hands and clothes and to bath in water to keep the germs and bacteria away.

The priests in the Old Testament dealt with matters of health together with the mandatory ceremonies and rituals for cleansing from sin. The priests were required to wash repeatedly and bath themselves in water before and after entering into the tabernacle and the temple to officiate.

Disease control and health education has become so compulsory today as part of prevention mechanisms. Prevention is said to be better than cure. Henceforth, let us ensure we maintain the highest forms of hygiene to prevent bacteria and disease from spreading in our homes and neighbourhoods.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "The Bibles standard on spiritual and physical cleanliness is for the benefit of man."

TEXT: Leviticus 16:1-19

"And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat" (Leviticus 16:2).

Imagine trying to make an appointment with the president of the United States of America. You telephone the White House, tell them who you are and that you would like to make an appointment. The questions come thick and fast: “Who are you? Where are you from? What is the nature of your inquiry? Can anyone else help you? He’s very busy.” But if the president’s son calls him, that’s not the kind of response he’ll get. It will be, “Oh yes, I’ll put you right through.” That’s the kind of access we have with God.

Aaron’s two sons died in the presence of the Lord after offering strange fire before Him. Aaron was reminded once again of the requirements to approach God in the most holy place. He was to offer a young bullock for a sin offering and a ram as burnt offering for himself and his household, and was also required to wash himself in water before putting on the priestly garments. For the children of Israel, he was to take two goats and cast lot. The one chosen would be offered as sin offering, while the second, the scapegoat was presented alive before the Lord to make an atonement after which it would be released into the wilderness. The blood of the sin offering would be sprinkled on the mercy seat for the cleansing of the people.

From Matthew’s gospel, immediately Jesus died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, opening the presence of God and mankind has now been removed. However, unlike the time of old, today, if we must have access to God, it has to be granted through His own chosen medium, Jesus Christ. He is the Mediator between lost humanity and God. Religion alone cannot save, but Christ.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Christ's death has granted us unrestrained access to God."
