This question has being on my mind for a long period of time, and I will like to share it with nairalanders and have your view(s) about it.

There is this issue that happened between my friend and his dad, he wanted to go out and watch a champions league football match in the night but his dad asked him not to. But he went ahead and watched the match. He got into a quarrel with his dad and much happened afterwards, his father told him as long as he is under him he should obey his commands.

A friend's dad will always tell him, as long as you are living under my roof and collecting my money, you aren't independent and you must obey everything I say.

I will like to know when can a child be independent of his parents, and can he be independent and still be living with his parents.

You can't be dependent and still want to live an independent life...it's not done that that way. undecided

@LogoDwhiz
Agreed, sometimes, our parents push it, especially for those who still depend on theirs be it for shelter, or food, inter alia.

You just have to do your best to comply while trying to create a peaceful atmosphere, one that you can actually live in, without loosing your sanity..

Even if situations were different, it'd be really nice to carry on with most of the values instilled in the individual.
Got any questions?

Okay. Thanks for the input.

So we can say, as long as you still stay under your parents, you are not totally independent.

He who pays the piper dictates the tune

Your friend's dad is right.
As long as your friend is still dependent on his father for finances, accomodation, and sustenance, then he MUST comply with his father's wishes

If your friend wants to be truly independent, he should move out of his dad's home and start hustling to sustain himself.

Then he can watch as many champions league games as he wants and his dad won't even bat an eyelid.

The precise line of gaining independence differs from society to society, and obviously a young man's level of maturity.

In contemporary America, an individual who has turned 18 is said to have come of age. In the jewish tradition, 13 is the age to become a man. Nigeria should be 18 as well, although that has been abused severally.

What is important is that, the young man must have graduated into a position of self-responsibilty. He must have transitioned into a separate and self-determining entity. Whether or not he takes immediate advantage of the opportunity, he has the right to leave home and make his own way.

And to the question of staying at home and enjoying your independence.

That would be pretty difficult to actualize. You're still living with your parents, who must have got mapped out principles they expect you to meet, so your independence is limited.

They're trying to instill some important values into your life, values that would dictate how you relate with the world when you must have gained your independence.

Sorry, I slept off on my keypad.

Ok, If you still dey ''chop mama thank you'', Daddy, thanks sir; then you cant be said to be independent under your parents roof ..even if you have 3 wives.

If you're 11 years old and enter Ekene dili chukwu to Lagos in search of greener pastures; you are independent ..even if your people send stipends to support you.

So, a child can be independent when he/she chooses to be so by taking care of her Food, clothing and shelter.

If your friend wants to be fully independent, he should be a man, build his own house/home just as his Dad did... You can't be under another man's roof and expect not to be under his authority. ..

As regards disobeying his dad, he should remember he will be a dad too someday. ... There are minor things that shouldn't cause quarrel between a father and son, what's football? ? if your friend is too big to be controlled as he claims, why can't be afford to buy maybe DSTV and watch matches comfortably at home?

Your Parents dey give you shelter, food, etc yet you dey form uncontrollable.....makes no sense
