BurntToast:
Lolz
What about mgbafor and mgbaorie? cheesy
eke, orie, aför, nkwö are the Igbo days as against Monday, Tuesday in English or Lundi, Mardi in French.

Name can come inform of:

nwa-eke = nweke = child born on eke day
oke-eke = okeke = man born on eke day
mgbe-eke = mgbeke = woman born on eke day

Guess you can figure out the rest.

I met a little girl named Chifumnaya= God loves me.
I fell in love with the sound of the name before I knew the meaning . Now that i know the meaning, I don't mind giving my child that name even though am not igbo.

Most of the igbo ppl in lagos don't use igbo names. Maybe they are ashamed of it. The igbo names I am familiar with are:

Flower
Shantel
Sandra
Amanda
Favor
Genesis
Jude
Charles
Almeda
Beauty
Rose.

Even SOME of the ones claiming to love their igbo names on NL are fake. When u meet them for real and ask for their names, they give u one funny English name. How can someone's name be callistus or genesis?

kenex4ever: My best igbo names without chi, chukwu, are:
Olaedo(reserved for my daughter)
Kesandu
Somadina
Lotanna(Love dis one, never knew its an igbo name until now: it means REMEMBER GOD or Father)
Kachiside

That "Olaedo" would be so fab if she can maintain the name into her adult life rather than going for its short form - "Ola". To me without the "edo" it looses all the sweetness and indeed the whole intention behind the naming.

That in part is how the erudite scholar, Ngozi Adichie carved a niche for herself by maintaining all the syllabules of "CHIMAMANDA" turning it into a brand. Unlike this 21st century airheads who would jettison the "CHIM" upon entering the university

You even hear parents naming their kids rapture, I just wonder why parents deliberately put their kids at risk of being bullied

For those asking why the "chukwu", "ukwu", "chi", etc in most Igbo name, it's due to the origin of the Igbo. As in, lost tribe of Israel. Also, the Igbos do nothing without make reference to CHI which means "GOD or gods". Right from the "days of yore", the Igbos believe anything they do or that happens is a responsibility of a CHI.
Even when "chukwu or chi" is not used directly but indirectly it is there.
I hope this answers your question?

Just like I love the name:
CHIMEKWEKAMDA= my God won't let me fall.

Ukwu has several meanings depending on the accents on the vowels.

Úkwù = waist (but for perverts it is both waist and buttocks of lady)
Úkwú = big/large
Ükwü = leg

basille: All core and authentic igbo names has diminished over times and the little ones remaining is either been contaminated with the word"chukwu/chi" by over religious freaks or englishdized by jobless youth with no comprehension and appreciation of their culture.

Why not share those names?

simplynola: I have 2 neighbours, one is Otakagu and the other sounds like ozubechukwu or is it uzubechukwu. Kindly decode the meaning pls
Otakagu could literally mean "bites like a leopard" ozubechukwu - though I'm not sure - could mean "God's direction"
