Sorry I took a while, the site is www.asqe.org and another organizatn dat organizes this is bureau veritas, website  is www.bureauveritas.com. The are both abroad based but have locations in Nigeria, the first is organized by Capable People. The second, from what I found out also do some auditing for Nestle. The both offer Environmental management (EMS), quality management (QMS), HSE and BV (the second) also do risk management and so many other things, you can google them both and pick your choice.

Also other bodies apart from NISP are NIGERIAN ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIETY {NES}, EARTHWATCH RESEARCH INSTITUTE {EWRI}. Since you focusing on the environment, it will really favor you.

Wish u luck! wink

@brainwave,
i was wondering if the 6 month industrial training acquired in the energy sector( where i gained major experience in root cause analysis and risk assessment et al) is enough to apply for a hse job in Nigeria coupled with the certification.

@kkkossy, sure why not? With your industrial engineering background + HSE certification, you're in good stead to apply for HSE jobs in nigeria.

@Kingzy4pep, the salary of graduates with NISP/HSE certifications vary. It depends on a lot of factors e.g your prior qualifications/discipline, relevant / prior work experience (if any), the industry (e.g, oil & gas, construction, manufacturing et.c) and of course the salary structure of the particular organization (company) of interest.

@deetosh, u're welcome on board! My dear, I assume Computer Science was your 1st degree, after which you are at liberty to re-invent your career path if you so desire. Therefore, my answer to your question would be to advise you to do some more research on the 3 key areas of HSE and see which of them naturally interests you most, that may just determine for you, the area to focus or specialize on should you decide to follow the HSE pathway. Cheers!

I've concluded the HSE L3 training with NISP. The safety aspects were very intensive and very informative, considering that my background is strictly environmental management. One good thing I liked about the course was that the instructors tried to teach safety in any work environments, even though it is supposed to be an SPDC sponsored program (apart from the contractor and community bits).

One disturbing observation though is that out of 30 in the class, only 2 persons were employed at that time! The rest of us (me included) were either job hunting, doing business or in between jobs, and we were all graduates. It's a shame really considering that these courses are run every week in different states and each participant have to pay individually for them, some starting with the general HSE. I just hope our sacrifices will pay off soon.

One brilliant idea we implemented was to get a list of everyone in the class with our contacts typed out and photocopied so we could network and we also managed to get a couple of contacts from some of the lecturers as well.

Overall I made new friends and enjoyed myself. Let's see what happens next  cool

Hi everyone and it's my great pleasure to be a part of these threads of contributions on the subject above. Reading through almost all the contributions gave me so much joy that HSE is becoming a household profession and career in Nigeria. Well done to all of you and keep the contribution coming!!! By the way, I have been actively practising as a HSE professional for more than 10 years now and presently work as a consultant to a multinational company as well as running a HSE consulting and training firm in Lagos Nigeria.

My addition to all these is that why NISP and NEBOSH have been highlighted so much in the comments, there have not been a mention of other internationally recognised certification bodies through which knowledge, competence and skills can also be achieved for all intending and of course practising HSE prefessionals. Some of these include Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) UK, British Safety Council (BSC) UK, Institute of Safety & Health (IOSH) UK, NASP & OSHA USA, BRCSP, Canada, and others. It is important to note that HSE is a global career and your marketability is highly dependent on your competence and global certification that you have achieved.

As some have remarked in the comments, NEBOSH may sound very expensive especially for those just starting the career path, some other certifications listed above are cheaper, more flexible payment terms and course attendance while also maintaining the same standard as set by the accreditation bodies. CIEH for example possesses all of these features and interestingly, NOW in Nigeria starting from as low as 25K to begin the certification courses. For more information on the company in Nigeria that is presently approved by CIEH to run their courses, contact: training@hybridconsultinglimited.com If you will like more information on these and others HSE competence development program, contact my on 08033019807.

Hi All,

I have been told i will get answers to some of my burning questions.

two things; how can i get a safety job in Nigeria or worldwide oil and gas industry?

I am currently in the uk working as a HSEQ Adviosr for a gas utility company (not major hazard pipeline but from the gas mains in the street to the guvnors in domestic and commercial buildings) with over 5yrs experience gained in railway, construction and gas utility but need to break into the oil and gas or food processing or chemical industry.

I hold a BSc in Physics (Nigeria), MSc in project management(UK), NEBOSH Diploma cert, NEBOSH Construction cert, NEBOSH fire and safety management cert, CQI Diploma in Quality cert and ISO9001 Lead auditor cert however, i stll cant find a job in the oil and gas. now i am thinking of studying a specialist safety course i.e. MSc Process safety and loss prevention - sheffield university uk - will doing this MSc give me a footy in the doorway? or am i okay with what i have already to gain a position in the oil and gas?

Lastly, i need sites for recruitment agencies in Nigeria please.

Your assiance and advise is highly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Apologies for not responding to this post earlier, it was just brought to my attention (thanks Dis Guy).

Kudos for completing your NEBOSH general certificate - I have been informed that it is quite demanding so you've done well in that regard. While that is a good qualification to have under your belt HSE wise, it's not directly inclined to environmental management consulting.

Where are you based and what experience have you had so far? Are you seeking opportunities in Nigeria or elsewhere? We'll need to establish some background before I can really provide any advice.

I've sent you an email so please post on this thread when you've received it.

@ 1007
wat u have is more than enuff, wat u really lack now is visibility, meaning that u have not really spread ur tentacles interms of job search and narrow down ur options.
safety is a very lucrative and viable career.

Your going to do MSC at sheffield is not a bad idea ,it might even take u step into the oil and gas offshore industry, u can give it a try ,loss prevention, mitigation and control is a very important part of safety and it will get you into the main stream of safety and been an IRCA certified auditor is a very good certificate to have at hand.

that said, wat i will advice or wat i will do if i was in ur boots, is spread ur resume to recruiting agencies both online and offline i will give u some few u shud try,u can be doing ur masters while u r doing the job search, from my experience most employers hardly employ safety personnel with matsers degree in safety, but i am not ruling dat out, a masters in safety will get u a job in world renowned oil and gas coys like saudi aramco, brunei energy.

Rigzone is a good place to register and send ur cv, ur can subscribe for job alerts and u get lots of jobs for oil and gas vacancy in the whole world including Nigeria.u can also subscribe to upstream online, since u are in europe u can subscribe for the daily newspaper, i tell u , u will get lots of oil and gas job vacancy for NIgeria!!!! dat r not even published in our daily newspapers.

worldwideworker is another hot and authentic job agency for oil and gas jobs around the world.

HAYS.COM is another authentic recruiting agency , they r based in the uk

oilcareers.com is another authentic agency and very current but you have to pay a premium for cv to be in the top pile.

when u are applying for this jobs make sure u indicate that u will like to work in Nigeria by virture of ur being a citizen cos most of these advertised jobs are hardly taken by europeans and americans except asians ( mostly garlic reeking indians ) , so ur being a citizen and willing to relocate will give u an edge and besides u will be recruited as an expatriate.

well i hope this helps ,just give it a shot and see how it goes.dont 4get to upload all your certificates, u have to be convincing.

take care

Hello all.

I plan taking the general HSE at NISP but was informed they don't have weekend programs.
My work schedule is very tight and i'm not free until sept when i take my annual leave.

Can anyone help out with HSE institutes that offer weekend programs? I really need the HSE course/certification asap!.

Thanx.

Hi all, this is a reply to debosky's post , thanks your for ur reply and getting back to me, currently i'm in lagos and have come to see if iu could push my search down here as i 've friends who came home and got intersting package, in the UK, i live in coventry, loads of ppl have advised i move to scotland , bt i believe u know its not easy to do that only to start searching for jobs now, i've had about 7-8 months working experience handling carbon footprinting and implementation of iso14001 for a company called international fasteners in warwickshire, it was paid monthly by a university called keele university and after the period the job finished i couldnt continue as the company was a medium sized one and didnt want to continue paying for the role, while i was with them i worked with a consultant from groundworks, major part of the role also included compiling the regulations and legislations associated with the company activities, thats all i've done and i did my nebosh after dat, if there is any advise you hav for me or any assistance i could get fell free to put the here may be othes could also benefit, thanks once again, hope to hear frm u.
