I foresee a massive agricultural boom never witnessed in Igboland recent time coming to Ala Igbo. Just yesterday governor Obiano on Channels tv signed an MoU with a private sector investor to commence revival and production from the big Omor rice mill which would source supply from 10,000 hectares of land owned by co-operatives and the private sector. The biggest cassava flour plant in the south east is under construction in Abiriba Abia State with 5,000 hectares of land allocated to the plant. Co-operatives and rural farmers are billed to benefit from this plant.

FG procures N13b rice, cassava flour mills

• Ratifies Lagos-Abidjan expressway

By Chesa Chesa / Senior Correspondent, Abuja

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved N13 billion for the procurement of 10 integrated rice mills and six high quality cassava flour mills to boost domestic rice and cassava production.

The FEC also approved a contract of N568million ($2.2m plus N208.5m) for the design and supply of a bigger transformer for the Maiduguri sub-station on Bagga Road, Borno state.

Briefing journalists after the weekly FEC meeting, Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, said the rice mills would be located in 10 states – Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Ogun, Bayelsa, Niger, Kogi, Anambra, Benue and Bauchi – while the cassava mills would be deployed to Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Delta, Cross River, Nassarawa states.

Each of the rice mills has a capacity to mill 36,000 metric tonnes of paddy rice, making it a total of 360,000 metric tonnes of paddy rice to be finely processed across the country.

There are plans for more integrated rice mills across the country as government was currently working towards a total stop to the importation of rice.

According to Adesina, the mills “will not be owned or run by government, they are going to be owned managed and operated by the private sector, it’s part of government’s way of making this available at a term of financing that can be afforded by the private sector.

“The acquisition of this will be done by the Bank of Industry. It will select the private sector people, they will have the down payment, and the plants are going to be constructed and they have a financing facility for them to own it.

“Government is just doing its job which is to get things to happen, but the private sector will do every single thing about it. There are still those who go around trying to get waivers to import rice and throw us into poverty, this will no longer be possible”.

The Maiduguri project is for the additional construction of 1x60MVA, 132/332KV transformer to the Maiduguri 1x150MVA, NK330/132 Substation, in favour of Merssrs Best Crompton Engineering (Africa) Limited, to be completed within 12 months.

The projection is one of the key projects designed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria to strengthen the national grid for effective power wheeling and to enhance socio-economic development of the state.

The Largest Poultry in West Africa Imo poultry begins sale of birds, to breed over 100,000 before year end

By akachukwu / September 9, 2014 / 0 Comments

OWERRI – The Imo State Government said it has commenced the sale of the first batch of its birds at the State Modern Poultry, Avutu.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha made this known on Tuesday at Avutu in Obowo Local Government Area at the flag-off of the first sale of about 10,000 chickens raised in the farm.

The governor, represented by the Speaker, Imo House of Assembly, Mr Benjamin Uwajimogu, expressed satisfaction that the poultry, one of the legacies of late Chief Sam Mbakwe administration, had come back to life.

He said the poultry had remained moribund for over 20 years.

Okorocha said his administration decided to revive the poultry as part of its efforts to create employment opportunities, promote agriculture, as well as boost the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state.

He said that his government would not rest on its oars until all moribund industries in the state were revamped, and abandoned projects completed.

“The Poultry, within its few months of reactivation, has produced the first batch of over 10,000 chickens for sale to the public.

“The farm will make available more than 100,000 birds for sale by December 2014,” he said.

Okorocha said the farm had the capacity to house over 2.5 million birds, as well as provide investment in other areas like fisheries, livestock, feed production, processing and packaging of frozen chickens.

He called on investors to take advantage of the opportunities available in the project.

The Speaker pledged the donation of 20,000 chicks to the poultry, as part of his contribution to the development of the farm.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Frank Ibezim, recounted the journey to the reactivation of the Imo Modern Poultry by the present administration, and commended the governor for his vision.

Ibezim noted that the poultry farm, the largest in South Saharan Africa, is situated on about 177 hectres of land with 45 poultry houses of 2.5 million birds’ capacity.

He said the farm had a feed mill of 3,000 metric tons silo, as well as hatcheries, a layer capacity of 235,000 birds and about 100 ton cold room for preservation of processed chickens.

The commissioner also noted that the government was working in collaboration with a South African Agric investment company, Whawna Crux, to rehabilitate the Poultry and make it function to full capacity.

He said the farm would engage both skilled and unskilled manpower; provide capacity building to youths on modern poultry keeping.

He said it would also involve empowerment and provide bye-off and processing services for poultry farmers in the state.

The Commissioner for Community Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Val Mbamala, however, expressed regret over the neglect of investment projects by previous administrations, saying it led to poor revenue generation in the state.

He commended Okorocha for rehabilitating the Poultry, the Imo Rubber Company, and Imo Palm Plantation, among others.

The traditional ruler of Avutu Autonomous Community, Eze Ebel Chukwuocha, expressed happiness that the farm would engage unemployed youths in the area.

He assured the government of the continued support of the people of the area. (NAN)

Governor Obiano is really serious in boosting Agriculture in Anambra State.

BY ENYIM ENYIM

ONITSHA—Anambra State government is to purchase 100 tractors in the first week of May as part of plans to boost agriculture in the state.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Nnamdi Mekoh, who dropped the hint yesterday in an interview with Vanguard, said the tractors would be made available to farmers and harvesters on hire basis, adding that improved maize, rice and cassava cuttings would be made available to farmers by the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We are also making arrangement with Rainbow Chicken in South Africa to come here and make chicken cheaper for us here. It is expected that they would be producing 1.5 million chickens daily. And this would offer jobs to thousands of our unemployed youths,” he said.

According to Mekoh, the government of Governor Obiano is committed to total revolutionisation of agriculture in the state, with the N5.9bn appropriated for the Ministry of Agriculture, against the N1.6 bn that had been appropriated in the budget before now.

Besides, he said the state government under the former governor, Mr Peter Obi, had accessed N1.2 billion from Agricultural Credit Bank that would be disbursed to small scale farmers this year.

Nigerian Air Force Graduates 36 Pioneer Commercial Helicopter Pilots in Enugu

on September 19, 2014 / in News 6:39 pm / Comments
Tweet

Enugu- The first set of 36 commercial helicopter pilots trained in the country graduated from the Nigerian Air Force International Helicopter Flying School in Enugu State on Friday.

Vice President Namadi Sambo said at the graduation that the pioneer helicopter pilots ever trained in the country would help to ensure safety, security and development of the aviation sector.

According to him, it is a monumental achievement that will stand the test of time.

Sambo said “this is a clear testimony that the Nigerian Air Force is moving in the right direction toward fulfilling its mandate as the centre of excellence which is in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal government.

“I charge you all to sustain the tempo so that this school will compete with other flying international schools.

“This is just the beginning. In the near future, this institution will not only train pilots but will maintain and manufacture aircraft.’’

The vice president urged the new pilots to work harder and be good ambassadors of the school and the country in general.

In his remarks, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosun, commended the Federal Government for its support toward ensuring that the goals of the school were met.

Amosun said that the school, established in 2012, was aimed at encouraging air force personnel to have civil licences and ratings to enable them to reintegrate into the civil society when they disengaged from service.

He pledged the commitment of the force in providing quality services to the aviation sector.

The Chairman, Board of Directors of the school, Prince Arthur Eze, called on the students to distinguish themselves in order to encourage more entrants into the school.

The Rector of the school, Group Capt. Ismaila Yahaya, said that the school offered 11 different helicopter courses, including integrated helicopter pilot course and instrument rating.
He said the graduates were sponsored by the Nigerian Air Force, the Navy, Police and the Yobe government, while three were privately sponsored.

Some of the graduating students who spoke said said the training had prepared them for the challenges ahead in flight operations.

The new pilots include Lt. Patrick Onah, Abdulkarim Ibrahim and Ndah Ekerete.

Highlights of the event were the inauguration of the NAF 305 headquaters and presentation of certificates to the graduating students by the vice president.

Dignitaries at the event include Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu State and his Deputy, Rev. Ifeanyi Nwoye, as well as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Chief Hope Uzodinma and former Governor of Enugu State, Chief Jim Nwobodo.
